As part of their independent learning, German students at Paston

Sixth Form College were asked to produce posters, articles and
podcasts on a variety of different topics. The project was run as
a competition, and it was Year 12 student Harriet Bradnock who
handed in the winning contribution: a beautifully designed poster
advertising the German City of Cologne and its various tourist
attractions.
Impressed by the outstanding quality of the work (and knowing
that the student was heading to Germany to visit the Christmas
markets), Harriets teacher got in touch with the Tourist
Information Office of Cologne to ask them if they were willing to
sponsor a little prize, and indeed they were more than willing to
help. Having received a copy of the poster, they decided not only
to surprise Harriet with a small gift but also asked for the poster
to be published in Stadt Intern, Colognes magazine for the
citys employees and their families.
Harriet and her family visited Cologne over the Christmas period,
where Harriet was presented with a range of gifts relating to
Cologne from the Tourist Information Office.
Harriet said her family enjoyed the visit to Cologne, especially
the historic buildings, and meeting the local people who were
extremely friendly and welcoming.
Well done, Harriet!

Dear Editor,
Nearly there..junction at Felbrigg A148/
B1436
After over eight years of campaigning
by the Steps to Safety group,
acknowledgement of the need for a
roundabout at this important, frustrating
and dangerous junction has been made by
Norfolk County Council Highways Dept.
Their costing estimate is 552,000 but
they are unable to meet the entire costs
from their own funds and are seeking
help to cover the shortfall, which after
pledges received from local town and
parish councils, the district council
and the National Trust, is in the region
of 107,000.In order to safeguard the
monies committed by NNC, work needs to
start fairly soon.
During the past two years surveys
undertaken by the Steps team, both from
the public and local businesses, showed
overwhelming support for a roundabout at
this junction.

We are now seeking monetary pledges in

order to close the funding gap. We are not
asking for money at this stage but pledges
which will only be called in when the
project is ready to start. If you would like
to see a roundabout at this junction please
consider pledging now.
The easiest way is through our web site
www. felbriggroundabout.com which has
a lot of information on the project or to me
Sue.arnold@talktalk.net.
Please give this your URGENT
CONSIDERATION. If we are unable
to realise these additional funds there is
a real possibility the commitment from
NNC will be withdrawn.
Yours sincerely,
Sue Arnold

Dear Editor,
On behalf of Cromer RNLI, i would like
to say thank you to everyone who attended
the Carol Evening sponsored by The
Grove Hotel in Cromer.
The evening began at 6pm and everyone
was made welcome by a warming drink
of mulled wine(or soft drink) and a warm
mince pie.
During the evening, several carols
were sung and they were linked by the
Christmas story readings from people
who are either active crew or have an
assocation with Cromer RNLI.
Just under 300 was raised to support the
valuable work undertaken by the RNLI.
Thank you to The Grove and in particular
Richard Graveling, for undertaking this
and supplying refreshments for all who
attended.

Dear Editor,
It is always on my list when I stay in
Cromer at our Holiday Home or with
friends to try to pick up the latest Crab
Tales.
We love Cromer and the surrounding area,
not only for its beauty and events such as
the Fireworks and Turning on of the Xmas
Lights, but also for its strong community
spirit.
I experienced this first hand over
Christmas when I lost my Iphone on
30 December, and despite a trawl of my
haunts that day failed to find it. All turned
out well when I found out it had been
found in Beach Road and the lady who
picked it up then took it to the Police.
Station in Holt Road.
She did not leave her details and I hope
that you may be able to publish, a sincere
"Thank You" in your publication.
Living in London, I think the chances of
this happening would be a lot smaller!
With all good wishes for 2016

The Old Chow

Rescue Home

Chow chows have been in Fenellas

family for many years, with her love
of the breed she has set up a rescue
service for older, sick and terminally
ill chow chows, it is run in East
Runton at the home of Fenella.
Seven years ago, she saved her first
chow and is now caring for the 27th
chow chow brought to her, MAYA
an 8 year old blind chow is receiving
twice daily an application of eye
ointment to help reduce the black
corneal pigmentation in her eyes.
This chow needs an operation to help
restore her sight to a world of light
and no longer darkness after being
totally blind for 5 years. Neglected in
her younger years, Fenella is hoping
with the help of the public, this
chows sight can be saved and she can
then be re-homed to a forever loving
family.
SCOOBY another rescue also resides
at The Old Chow Rescue Home.
Hes age 7 and has miraculously
managed to show superb recovery
from a severe skin condition resulting
from Calcinosis Cutis, he has
medicated weekly baths and is on a
specialised veterinary diet for life,
which is expensive, which also needs
to be funded.
Fenella also cares for a terminally
ill chow chow HEMMY hes age 11
and needs care and lots of love and
attention.
Three more chow chows are due into
the rescue home in the next 3 months
who will need to be cared for, nursed
and then once healthy, be re-homed to
families understanding this breed .
Some of the rescues brought to the
rescue home have been starved,
neglected, abandoned or flea ridden,
full of worms, maggot infested areas,
ear infections, septic gumsand bad
decaying teeth. Fenella has nursed
them all and then re-homed them to
wonderful families.
Anyone wishing to help by making
a donation please get in touch with
Fenella on07788885091
Clean towels, flat sheets, duvet covers
and close weave blankets are always
gratefully received, if any member of
the public has any to spare.
Please go and meet Fenella and some
of the chows who all enjoy pats and
cuddles they will be at Morrisons
Cromer on Sunday 31st January from
10.30 until 1.30.

Cromer and Wells benefit from

100,000 government grant
Coastal Revival Fund helps two
heritage sites in North Norfolk

A 100,000 government grant will help breathe new life into two
heritage sites in North Norfolk.
The Cromer West prom Art Deco block renovation and the Wells
Maltings Project have been awarded 50,000 each under the
national Coastal Revival Fund scheme.
The purpose of the Coastal Revival Fund is to help kick-start
the revival of at-risk heritage sites that have potential to create
opportunities for new businesses and jobs.
It seeks to support communities looking to unlock the economic
potential of those hard-to-tackle buildings, facilities and
amusements such as piers, lidos and proms.
The Cromer grant will be used by North Norfolk District Council
to support the renovation and rejuvenation of the Cromer West
promenade Art Deco chalet block. The block was severely
damaged in the storms which ravaged the North Norfolk coast in
December 2013.
The Wells grant will help the Wells Maltings Trust develop a
landmark heritage, arts and community project in the Grade
II former Maltings building in the centre of this rural, coastal
community.
The building will be transformed into a community space,
heritage and learning centre, auditorium, caf and central box
office and tourist information centre.
The Coastal Revival Fund money will pay to refurbish, repair and
reconfigure the existing Maltings building.
Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said: Both the
Cromer and Wells projects support the local economy and help
create income for the community.
We appreciate the fact that both of these bids were successful
and look forward to the projects proceeding in the new year.
Becky Jefcoate, Wells Maltings Project Development Manager,
said: We are very excited to hear the good news about the
Coastal Revival Find, which will help us transform the Maltings
into a landmark visitor attraction next year for local people and
visitors to enjoy.

NEED HELP REFURBISHING

YOUR DUCK ISLAND OR DOES
YOUR MOAT NEED CLEANING ?
Candidates sought for next
Youth Parliament elections
Norfolk County Council has started its search for the countys
next youth parliamentarians.
The council is looking for passionate 11 to 18-year-olds who
are keen to represent other young people on a local and national
stage.
It is hoped that 30- 40 people will stand for election, with nine
chosen by their peers to represent their electoral constituency.
Those winning in the county-wide elections will serve for
two years, working alongside other young people locally and
nationally, as well as liaising with county and district councillors
and their MP.
MYPs have a chance to:
Meet as a group once a month to discuss local campaigns;
Talk and consult with councillors and professionals over the
most important issues to young people;
Enhance their knowledge on the decisions being made about
young people in a relaxed, informal setting;
Attend regional Youth Parliament events in London;
Talk on radio stations and TV about the most important issues
for young people;
Comment on issues relevant to young people in the press;
Raise issues on behalf of other young people with MPs;
Attend the annual get together of MYPs from across the county
to debate important issues;
Debate within the House of Commons Chamber chaired by the
speaker, John Bercow MP.
The role of Norfolks MYPs is to find out the issues that affect
young people by using social media, talking to their peers and
visiting schools within their community.
James Joyce, Chairman of the Childrens Services Committee at
Norfolk County Council, said: Our youth parliamentarians have
done some tremendous work in recent years, campaigning on a
local and national stage.
They have shown great commitment and passion for the issues
affecting them and their peers and have been given the chance
to develop new skills, take part in once in a lifetime experiences
and, importantly, make a difference for Norfolk's children and
young people. I would urge any young people with an interest in
politics or campaigning to apply to be a candidate.
Youth parliament elections will take place from Monday, 14
March to Sunday, 20 March and Norfolk County Council is
hoping that more young people than ever will vote. In the last
elections, in 2014, more than 37,000 votes were cast, a record for
the county. This is believed to be one of the highest numbers in
any election in the youth parliaments history.
Kieren Buxton,17, MYP for Norwich South, said: "Being in
the Youth Parliament helped me to raise my confidence and
communication skills. Its also helped me to find a career path in
youth work."
Emily Fox, 16, MYP for Mid Norfolk, added: "Being an MYP
makes you so much more confident, you get to meet lots of
new people and the experiences you get are endless. Its really
enjoyable."
Jacob Rhodes, 13, MYP for South Norfolk, said: "The feeling
you get when youre standing up for young people is priceless.
This is an experience of a lifetime."
To stand for election, candidates need to fill in an application
form, available at www.norfolk.gov.uk/youthparliament. The
deadline is Monday, 15 February at 5pm.

Involvement Officer, on 01603 495102 or email ben.dunne@

Paston Sixth Form College is

rated all good by Ofsted
Inspectors visited the College last month and published their
Report today, giving it an overall rating of good, as well as
good in all the individual aspects that are assessed: exam
results, teaching and learning, personal development, behaviour
and welfare, and leadership and management. The inspection
was based on the new, tougher inspection framework, which was
introduced in September 2015.
The Inspection found that, at Paston:
All learners are well behaved, motivated and have a positive
attitude to learning, in and outside of lessons.
They treat each other and their teachers with respect and value
greatly the high level of support and guidance provided by their
teachers.
Learners benefit from teachers high levels of specialist skills
and the passion they have for their subjects.
The quality of learners work is high and at times outstanding.
Learners make very good progress in their lessons;as a result a
high proportion of learners achieve their qualifications and their
target grades.
A high proportion secure places in higher education, including
at Russell Group universities, or gain employment when this is
their intention.
The Report suggested the College would be outstanding
were it not for the small number of students without GCSE
mathematics, where too few learners improve their GCSE
mathematics grade while at the college and also because not
enough learners, particularly those on academic programmes,
have sufficient access to work experience placements.
In fact, the College was already working to address these areas
with the appointment of a new GCSE mathematics specialist,
who has already hada significant impact on results, and a
collaboration with the careers specialist Beacon East to improve
students preparation for work.
Principal Kevin Grieve said:This is an extremely pleasing Report which reflects the excellent
results our students have achieved over an extended period of
time. I am very proud of all the hard work put in by students and
all the teaching and support staff at the College. I would also
like to thank parents for their contribution and the support from
everyone involved with the College. It is a great team effort.
He also commented that:
Ofsted have not only picked out areas of good and outstanding
practice but provided us with other guidance to get even better
in the future. We know we have a very good College here that
is at the heart of the community, helping students achieve high
grades and progressing on to great opportunities in HE and
employment.

The College is having an

Open Morning on Saturday 6
February 2016 from 10.00am
12.30pm. This will provide
students and parents with an
opportunity to find out more
and apply for September 2016.

I have recently been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of General

Practitioners (RCGP) and I wanted to share a little about this award and the role
of the RCGP with Crab Tales readers.
The College is the professional membership body and guardian of standards for
over 50,000 family doctors in the UK.
The aim of the College is to promote excellence in Primary Care:
1.
By supporting research in Primary Care; much of which is published in
the BJGP (British Journal of General Practice).
2.
By supporting education in Primary Care;virtually all of the course a GP
trainee undertakes is set and monitored by the RCGP. The assessments along the
way are a precursor to taking the Membership which is a hurdle which must be
crossed before qualifying as a GP. At this stage a GP can have MRCGP after their
name.
3.
By maintaining standards; the RCGP is a driving force in the quality
standards required by GPs for annual appraisal and5 yearly revalidation. Every
GP must have (and pass) an annual appraisal and every 5 years an extended
appraisal is performed which means he or she has been revalidated. Although
this may be a driver for improvement it has been unpopular for a variety of
reasons and many GPs have cited revalidation as a reason for retirement.
4.
By supporting and protecting the Profession of General Practice; at the
moment it could be argued that this is the main function of the RCGP. British
General Practice is under huge pressure from successive cuts in funding, changes
to the way in which care is delivered and from cuts to Social Care budgets. The
RCGP has been instrumental in delivering many projects to raise awareness of this
including the Put Patients Firstcampaign.
5.
By providing a base in London; the RCGP oce is in Euston Square and
has many meeting rooms and accommodation provided (at a cost) for members of
the College whether in London for business or pleasure.
A Fellowship is awarded to a GP on completion of a long application process
supported by a nominator and two seconders. The applicant has to demonstrate
that they have achieved something above and beyond normal general practice.
In my case I suspect it was all the work and research I have undergone in the eld
of Respiratory Medicine within Primary Care and helped by my role as a Clinical
Director for the East of England Respiratory Strategy.
I am honoured and thrilled to be able to put FRCGP after my name from
November 20th 2015.
