Band Club Fakenham

A Band Club will be running during February half term for young people
aged 8-12 years old at Fakenham Academy.
Budding musicians and songwriters are urged to come along to the
two-day event being held on Tuesday 16 February and Wednesday 17
February from 10am to 4pm at the Academy in Field Lane.
The sessions will give young people the opportunity to have a go at
playing instruments, sing, write a song, try out new instruments and
perform.
Cllr Becky Palmer, North Norfolk District Councils Cabinet Member
for Leisure said: These sessions are a great way for young people to
discover their music talent and learn new skills.
The workshops have been funded by North Norfolk District Council
and Youth Music and have been organised by The Garage working with
Fakenham Academy.
The sessions are led by experienced music tutors from The Garage. No
previous music experience is needed.
The sessions cost 15 for the two days; to book a place call 01603

The wind has been very strong here of late
and many loose pieces of wood have been
on the roads or precariously overhanging
the roads, who should move these?
It cannot be any body at the council as
council vehicles dash pass them daily
and no one ever stops to just make safe or
clear off the highway!
The coast road was closed from Sunday evening
until Tuesday well that is what the signs stated but
once locals realised it was a case of mostly crying
Wolf, with no obvious working in process most of
the time, they were ignored and driven past, had
the new government initiative been up and running
Trimingham would have been in for a windfall of
about 10,000!
The new gym at Woodland as shown on the front, is
very welcoming from 0730 until 2130hrs daily, more
details page ..., no excuses about not being open
when you are not at work!

Rubbish Numskulls
Why cant folk dispose of their waste in
receptacles provide or take it home to get rid
of it. We cant blame it on holiday makers
as there appears to be more rubbish dumped
along the roads and lanes in the winter than
the summer.
Tesco sandwich wrappers and bills dumped
within a few yards of their door and bin.
Down the lane behind Mundesley Scout Hall
one can see pop and beer cans, plastic bags
and bottles, tobacco wrappers, glass
bottles and energy drink cans. Its a pity
that energy isnt put to the mussel power
needed to carry refuse to dustbins.
Down that lane some dog walkers take the
trouble to pick up their animals mess, very
admirable, but why then throw that bag into
the trees. Thats shocking and disgraceful,
this decoration offends.
Some councils want to record dog DNA
to be able to prosecute owners who dont
discard mess properly, what a great idea.
One wonders if it would be suggested that
everyone DNA is taken with a view to
prevent these indiscretions.

Dear Editor,
Living in Cromer dog owners are fortunate
being allowed into various venues for
coffee snacks & meals but in Norwich &
Gt.Yarmouth dogs and owners must be
separated-which means leaving your dog
at home, to be allowed in anywhere- I
dont think so!
We have asked in so many places and
been refused by all.
We feel that there should be places that
will let us in as in Cromer; The Bistro,
Pavilion Theatre Coffee Reef bar on the
pier. Amber(Anns dog) being well known
in the friendly Cafe Main, great homemade cakes & scones & all warm in this
cold weather.

over yet however the team at Cromer Pier are
already planning an exciting opportunity for
job hunters in February that will allow the
Pier to extend its seasonal team in time for the
Easter holidays.
During February half term on Thursday 18th
February, between 4pm and 7pm, Cromer Pier
is opening its doors for a Recruitment Drop In
which will see the Pavilion Bar and Theatre
transformed into a setting very similar to what
you may see for a speed dating session!
Recruiting suitable staff is a big challenge for
any seasonal business, says General Manager,
Jo Artherton. She continues Each year we
interview a lot of people who apply to work
here during the holidays and at weekends. We
wanted to do something different this year to
make it more efficient and fun for us, so the
management team here have decided that the
format used for speed dating is a great way

Changes Name and
gets New Lease of
Life.
The Old Norfolk holding branch of the Royal
British Legion has changed its name to the
Nelsons County Branch.
The Chairman said, I am pleased to say we
now have a functioning committee although
we have spaces available should you wish
to volunteer. Andrew Young (treasurer) and
I have been working to get this branch up
and running, we met up in the Lord Nelson,
Burnham Thorpe, on the 11th of January
We have purchased a domain name and our
website is being built, our Facebook page
is already live. Please like and share our
Facebook page.
We aim to build a social events calendar and
hold functions around the county although we
will use the Lord Nelson as our spiritual home
We have ordered a new Standard which will
be dedicated in Burnham Thorpe on the 2nd of
October

Rembering the
Mundesley Fallen
from The Great War
So often when we remember those who gave
their lives in service of our Country they are
but names. Either read out or inscribed on
stone we know nothing of who they were.
With the kind help of Christopher West we
will, in the forthcoming editions be giving
our readers the chance to learn a little about
some of the people named on the flag list at
Mundesley Museum.

DWP TO OPEN OFFICE AT

CROMER COUNCIL BUILDING.
Better Services, Better Value for Money DWP @ Council
Offices
Better services and better value for money will result from the
Department for Work and Pensions move to North Norfolk
District Councils offices in Holt Road, Cromer.
The 14-strong team moved into the building on Monday 11
January 2016 and started to run their services from the Council
offices on the same day.
A total of 170m2 office space was created by moving teams
within the existing building and reducing the need for storage
space. This has enabled the DWP to have their own public
waiting area, and for DWP clients to use the Councils self-serve
computers to access services directly.
The DWPs move from Garden Street offices in Cromer provides
an opportunity to bring services together in one location. It will
also help to reduce the cost of services by sharing the building.
Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Councils Cabinet Member
for Assets said: As an authority we have to make the most of
the resources we have, especially our offices. Im delighted to be
welcoming the Department for Work and Pensions to our offices
in Holt Road.
We know we need to operate as cost-effectively as possible, and
sharing our office space is a good way to generate income and
provide customers with a more joined up service. With the public
services under one roof my hope is that it will be a lot easier for
people to get the support they need.
Julia Nix, District Manager for the Department for Work and
Pensions said: This is my second co location site to move into
North Norfolk District Councils Premises. By moving into the
Local Authorities premises we will be making more effective use
of space and facilities, while making significant savings for the
taxpayer.
The move also represents an excellent opportunity for DWP
to build stronger working links with North Norfolk District
Council to work together to help our customers move closer to
employment and provide a better all-round quality service.
The Council office building, which is celebrating its 25th
anniversary this month, houses Norfolk County Council
Childrens Services, the Early Years Intervention Team and
eastlaw the Councils legal services company which sells its
services to others.

BEFORE GERTRUDE CAME THE

UN-NAMED ONE.

Its never welcome when storms comes a calling but the Church
Rooms at Mundesley had a more traumatic visit than most.
On 14th January the storm caused the collapse of the gable end of
the building. Inside were local table-tennis players who made a
safe and speedy exit.
The damage is so severe that the important and busy community
venue will be out of action for several months.

NEW CHAIRMAN FOR LOCAL UKIP BRANCH

At North Norfolk UK Independence Partys recent annual general meeting Jack Smith
was elected Chairman, Irene Ramsbotham [Secretary], Gina Foster [Membership
Secretary] and David Ramsbotham [Treasurer].
Terry Comber, the retiring Chairman, spoke about the progress that UKIP had made
during his 5 year tenure. Membership of the Branch had increased three fold, two
County Councillors had been elected and most importantly a referendum on our
membership of the European Union had been secured.
Jack Smith was delighted and honoured to be elected Chairman. He spoke of
his determination to continue to progress the Party both locally and nationally in
preparation for the vote on the EU.
County Councillor David Ramsbotham said that he was very pleased with Jack

Smiths appointment adding Jack is only 24 years old hopefully this will convince
everyone that we are not a Party of old fogies but the youngsters of Britain are also
keen to protect the future prosperity, security, sovereignty, democracy, culture and way
of life of our proud nation.

Fantastic news for Maya, the

Chow Chow.

The Old Chow Rescue Home managed to raise enough

funding for Maya the blind chow chow to have her operation.
On sunday 31st january fundraising at Morrisons store in
Cromer. raised 218.00 with more donations coming online,
Thank you on behalf of Maya.
Maya now has enough funding in her donation pot which
will enable her to have her opthalmic operation to restore
her sight to shapes and images. She will however need post
operation medication and eye drops and also eye ointment for
life after this surgery.
Many thanks to all her supporters who came to see her on
sunday and brought towels, sheets and blankets also needed
for the rescues at the Old Chow Rescue Home in East
Runton.
Scooby and Maya thoroughly enjoyed all the cuddles and
pats from the members of the public. Such a happy morning
for them.
Will send more news once Maya has had her operation to let
people know her progress.
Also future news on three more chow chows needing to be
saved and being brought to Fenella to be nursed, cared for
and given a wonderful and happy secure future.

DEVELOPMENT SITES WANTED.

New Local Plan for North Norfolk
North Norfolk District Council has started the process of
preparing a new Local Plan.
As part of the preparation of the Plan, the Council is carrying out
a Call for Sites.
This provides an opportunity for developers, landowners,
individuals and other interested parties to put forward potential
sites within North Norfolk District for development. Any sites
which are suggested will then be subject to a detailed appraisal
process by the Council. The Council will then publish preferred
options for consultation. The final site selections will then be
included in a draft Plan which will be subject to independent
examination before the new Plan can be adopted.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning, said: This is an
important stage in the process of preparing the new Plan and the
Council is keen to hear from as many people as possible so that
we can consider the options that may be available not just for
new housing but also other types of development.
The Call for Sites registration form and guidance notes are
available on the councils website at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/
callforsites and all forms should be returned on or before May 31,
2016.

Curious onlookers were drawn to

Hunstanton Beach to see the dead Sperm
Whale, one of a number found beached
and dead in Hunstanton, Skegness and in
the Netherlands.
Some feel the scenes are ghoulish and the
graffiti dawbed by activists on the dead
creatures in bad taste.
We are told that the activities of man both

New exhibition to open at

Norwich Castle, inspired by
Cressida Cowells How to Train
Your Dragon books.

This spring don your Viking helmet, brush up your Dragonese, and head to Norwich
Castle for our exciting new family-friendly exhibition, A Vikings Guide to Deadly
Dragons. The exhibition is inspired by Cressida Cowells best-selling childrens books
How to Train Your Dragon, now a major Hollywood film and TV franchise.
Created by Seven Stories, The National Centre for Childrens Books, this wonderful
exhibition will transport you to a world where Vikings rule and dragons roam. Discover
Berk, the island home of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. Join this unlikely hero
on his adventures with his tribe of Hairy Hooligans and Toothless, his hunting dragon.
Featuring Cressidas original illustrations, the exhibition gives visitors the chance to get
up close to the authors notebooks and watch filmed interviews. There are opportunities
for creative play, dressing as a Viking, visiting the Hooligan village and wild dragon
cave.
Alongside the exhibition, a packed programme of dragon-related events for all ages
will inform and entertain. Theres loads for families to enjoy including storytelling with
Thunderous Thor, Viking activities, drama performances, film screenings, glitter dragon
tattoos, dragon art and craft activities and a Chinese dragon dance workshop. With daily
activities throughout the Half Term and Easter Holidays, youngsters will be kept busy
and entertained.
Theres also plenty on offer for adults: our Tuesday lunchtime
talks programme takes a look at dragons in art and mythology
and Norwichs long association with the dragon, theres a
workshop on Writing for Children in partnership with the
University of East Anglia and sessions on How to paint your
dragon with the artists who painted last summers GoGoDragons
and How to clean your dragon with the Norwich Castle
conservation team
The Norwich Castle team have also been working closely with
the Norfolk County Council Libraries and Information Service
to use the opportunity presented by the exhibition to encourage
childrens literacy Cressida herself began drawing and writing
stories about dragons when she was nine. The collaboration
includes a specially decorated mobile library which will be
parked up on the Castle mound for special event days throughout
the exhibitions run. Visitors to the library van will be able to
enter a draw for the very special prize of a set of books signed by
Cressida Cowell and an original framed drawing by the author.
Cressida has kindly agreed to read one of her stories for a special
film that will be shown at libraries across Norfolk on Saturday 6
February to celebrate the opening of the exhibition and National
Libraries Day. At 11am all libraries will read the same chapter
from her book, to create the biggest story time in Norfolk!
Viking re-enactors will also be parading through the city waving
banners saying Love your Library on National Library Day
with the idea of getting people to follow the Vikings to the
library, once they have viewed the exhibition in the Castle.
Commenting on this collaboration, Jennifer Holland, Assistant
Director for Norfolk County Councils Community and
Environmental Services said: Libraries and Museums have
worked on many successful projects together, and we are very
pleased to be sharing a part of the Deadly Dragons season.
Stories about dragons are always popular and the mobile library
will be full of exciting books for all the family.

She is one of the biggest childrens authors in the world and Ive
no doubt this exhibition will prove to be hugely popular with
family audiences.
The colourful, creative world of Cressidas books has been
delighting children since they first appeared in 2003. The series
has now sold over 7 million books worldwide, and translated
into 37 languages. Cressida grew up in London but each year her
family spent holidays on a small, uninhabited Scottish island.
Her father built a stone house there and in the evenings would
tell tales of the Vikings who had invaded the island and of the
dragons who, according to legend, lived in the caves along the
cliffs.
Cressida thought it possible that dragons might live in that wild,
stormy place and by the age of nine she began to draw and write
stories about Vikings and dragons. As an adult she developed
this theme into the immensely popular series How to Train Your
Dragon published by Hodder. Now her imaginative world has
been turned into an exhibition, something which has delighted
Cressida:
I am incredibly excited and honoured that the How to Train
Your Dragon books are the subject of an exhibition. I hope that
a whole new generation of children will be as fascinated by
dragons and Vikings as I was when I was a child. I visited when
the amazing GoGoDragons were in residence, so Im especially
pleased that the exhibition is opening in Norwich.

or encountering Hiccup and Toothless for the first time, you
will find A Vikings Guide to Deadly Dragons a delightful and
inspirational exhibition.

Mundesley Mumblings.
DRY JANUARY !!?
Ironic isnt it in probably the wettest and mildest start to new year in recent years,
there is a national movement to encourage us all to stave off the favourite tipple
(whatever that might be) and have a month off the alcohol. So why is it, that when I
need to drive, or its just there, I can take it or leave it and the moment that I say to
myself, no alcohol for the month thats it, the craving monkey is sat firmly on my
shoulder chattering in my ear at every opportunity? I even had to miss out the booze
aisle in the supermarket the other day, it was just nuts. To coin a phrase lol is that lots
of laughs or just code for lunatic on loose I am really not sure! I do have to laugh at
myself and my friends who have joined me in this challenge, maybe we will make it, but
January seems to be such a long month
Sadly for many along the coast here January has brought more than they expected with
flash floods bringing sadness and hardship to some who have been unfortunate to have
been through it before and for some their first experience. Its very different seeing it
on the telly and being so removed, to hearing it first hand from those its happened to.
Often in those first few weeks after the all the hullaballoo of the festive season, there
is an air of flat resignation, and a distinctly empty purse! For those effected there are
weeks and often months of disruption to try and manage at the same time as holding
family, body and soul together. On reflection rather than mourning the bareness of my
purse its made me very aware and thankful for what my family and I have. Maybe its
just people around here, or maybe its part of the distinct North Norfolk culture, but this
seems to be a quality that is embedded in everyone I meet. Its a quality that I think
makes this probably one of the best places to live. Of course there are always things that
can be improved, but that leaves us with the opportunity to do something that can make
a difference.
And change is on the horizon here in Mundesley with new building developments by
the school and over at the Paston end of the village. Having spoken to a few people
there is, as expected mixed views. Those who believe it would be welcoming in
and strengthening our already thriving local community, and those hoping that the
percentage of holiday homes does not increase dramatically. My fear would always be
of turning into a ghost town outside of tourist season as some of the resorts further north
have already done so. Whilst we welcome visitors as essential to the livelihood of our
area, there is something lovely about those first few weeks when it feels like the village
returns to the locals! Its a new phenomenon for me and my hubby to feel so strongly
about where we live. Its what made us come in the first place having migrated from
down country. But to put it all in context and keep my feet firmly on the ground as my
darling offspring informed me, of course the best part of living here is the fact that he
can get chocolate cake from the fish and chip shop!
PS the chattering Monkey won I caved in to a glass or two of Vino. Yep I confess
I am rubbish at this stuff!

After School ClubSchools Out- on Fridays3.30pm-4.45pmin
term time; for children of primary school age. Games,
competitions, craft, tuck shop. Drop in after school.
Football - Training on Thursdays @ Sheringham Recreation
Ground; U10&U12 6-7 pm; U14 & U16 7-8 pm;
U16&Adults 8-9 pm. Matches are played on Saturday mornings.
Jigsaw- Parent and Toddler Group - Thursdays from 9.30am in
term time, for anyone from birth to 5 years with their parent or
carer. Soft play Zone and refreshments included.
Kaleidoscope - Tuesday from 2.30 pm Activities include demonstrations, outings, quizzes,
talks, discussions, a short prayer and, of course, coffee and cake.
Life GroupsWednesday 7.30 pm - for young people and adults; contact for more details.
Painting - Its Fun to Paint- Thursdays 7.30 pm SAD Club First and third Tuesdays 7.00 pm - for those anxious or depressed.
