Centralized scheduling improves cell edge throughput but does not improve the average cell throughput
NSN Smart Scheduler can Push Cell Edge Data Rates without a Centralized Element, as distributed SW algorithms
provide the best performance for managing inter-BTS interference. Similar simulation gains as for Samsung.
Unlike Huawei and ZTE, Samsung has actually deployed Smart Cell in live networks in Korea and has run trials
elsewhere
BTS Caching on LTE BTS competes directly with NSN Liquid Apps. Commercially available 3Q13?

Single Radio Controller (SRC)

Worlds First Scalable UMTS Solution with
Qualcomm

SRC is still futuristic, no commitment to an availability date, technical details missing

Fractional UMTS concept proposed by Qualcomm, and supported by Huawei, requires 3GPP standardization because L1
parameters need to be adjusted. If it ever comes to Release 12 specs, which is unlikely, it will be completed 2014 and first
devices come only 2016 => makes no sense. NSN narrowband 3.8-4.2 MHz refarming works with any existing terminals
SRC promises network access control and coordination scheduling for GSM, UMTS, LTE FDD, LTE TDD and Wi-Fi
Scalable UMTS promises UMTS services with a half bandwidth channel But no improvement in spectr eff
More than half of operators doing UMTS for GSM 900MHz re-farming are said to own less than 5 MHz bandwidth of
contiguous spectrum.

Security
Services

As LTE networks proliferate, so do security risks because LTE is

an all-IP network. That is, a security breach at any Access Point
can compromise the entire network. So, security solutions will be
in increasing demand.

For NSN GS offerings, see LTE Security Reference Case, LTE Security Sales Guide, and Security for MBB in
this Professional Services Portfolio Presentation (28MB)
While not emphasized or highlighted at MWC, our competitors all market solutions. In addition, given the welldeveloped market for enterprises, it is feasible that some supplying mainly that space today along with the wellrecognized consulting firms would target CSPs as part of the Telco/IT convergence we are witnessing.

Huawei announced receipt of a worlds first TMF certification for

Why for MBB?

Why for MBB?

Why for MBB?

Is it truly disruptive?
Yes. Carriers understand Cloud benefits within
their own data centers & downside high margin
threat from OTT & Cloud providers.

Is it truly disruptive?
Potentially. Vendors such as Ericsson, ALU, Cisco,
IBM, Juniper and to lesser extent Huawei have a
stake in a slow roll to protect proprietary HW and
OS/software. Moreover SDN is unproven as is IP
vendor SW in the mobile core.

Reduce CAPEX
Reduce OPEX
Simplify Operations and
Management
Reduce time to market
Is it truly disruptive?
Yes. Carriers across the globe are
realizing they will need to evolve their
networks to lower costs, meet data
traffic and remain competitive

Thought leadership in market research and industry dialogue on Carrier Cloud opportunities, leverage enterprise expertise and promote their
optical and can provider their own Carrier Cloudband Nodes (i.e. out-of-the-box) data center cloud automation platform) via their partnership with
HP. It can also federate with Amazon, OpenStack and other data center centric platforms

PGW, GGSN and DPI run on proprietary ALU 7750 Service Router
ATCA platforms offer potential for SDN, Service Router would require Open Flow-like interface
April 2013 will make a SDN announcement via its wholly owned subsidiary Nuage

Introduced Cisco Quantum enable service providers to build a

Cisco Virtual Programmable Network.
Highlighted their ASR 5000 series
mobile core

In two sizes, the ASR 5000 series , while being proprietary, is fully virtualized across its blades allowing it to run all EPC/3G packet core
functions, DPI, Wi-Fi and other applications on their common Star OS scaling up or down based on # of blades. Having all of these functions
integrated on common blades is an opportunity for supporting Carrier Cloud and SDN, although proprietarily.
Promoted World of Many Clouds suite of 50+ applications and services that are compliant with Cisco Cloudverse for Carriers to offer to
differentiate their offerings and compete with OTT players. Examples of Cisco and partner applications offered include; telepresenece, video, UC,
security, Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI), Virtual Desktop (VDI) and hosted collaboration.
Cisco Quantum is being promoted as the fusion of Cloud, Network, Access and Client devices, in reality is the SON capabilities of recently
acquired Intocell
Similar to ALU, Ericsson, Juniper and to a lesser extent Huawei Cisco has a vested interest in protecting their installed base of proprietary
hardware and Cisco OS software
SDN Cisco is very active and clearly intends to define the terms of SDN and has recently been both vocal in their desire to drive a greater
share of their revenue from MBB and SW (@20%) and willing to make acquisitions.
A updated SDN strategy and the introduction of new products (SDN Controllers) is expected in 2013 (NAM Users Conference).
SDN spin-in Insieme Networks could possibly come out of stealth mode sometime in 2H2013.

Demonstrated continued SDN thought leadership and stated intent to support - in their MWC ndustry talks and demo, promoting
their role in the development of their SDN vision with Carrier providers. Highlighted three ways to open new revenue
opportunities and costs savings:
Integrated network control, extending SDN control from the data center into the wide area network, all the way to the radio
access network
Orchestrated network and cloud management bringing both legacy network management and new management system
together in a unified control plane
Service exposure opening network interfaces to applications developers
Related areas of strength: OSS/BSS data and cloud centric capabilities and Akami CDN partnership to assist in the network
evolution to Carrier Cloud and SDN capabilities
Built prototype of a combined data center and network management capability based on Telcordia Service Director/OpenStack
with product launch slated for 2013
Deployment architecture includes both their proprietary Ericsson Blade System (MME, SGSN, PCRF, IMS) and Universal Service
Router (SGW, PGW, GGSN)
Given their entire core is on proprietary Ericsson HW and SW, it makes sense for them to embrace open Cloud and SDN
concepts to protect their customer base while making their own transition to COTS HW and fully virtualized SW
Similar to Cisco, Ericsson clearly intends to take an active role in defining SDN as a vehicle for network evolution. Their
strategic selling through development partnerships with Carrier customers will influence future RFX requirements

Juniper Networks Showcases Secure,

Fast & Scalable SDN and LTE-Enabled
Mobile Infrastructure

Launched SDN vision and two commercial offerings of their 4 step vision for Carriers:
Step 1: Centralize network management, analytics and configuration functionality to provide a single master that configures all networking
devices:. Junos Space Services Activation Director application enables service providers to provision thousands of seamless services,
including multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) and Carrier Ethernet for mobile backhaul. The Services Activation Director, along with
other Junos Space applications, is scheduled to be available for purchase in the first half of 2013, which allows the software to transfer to
any network element with which it operates.
Step 2: Extract networking and security services from the underlying hardware by creating service virtual machines (VMs):
Juniper Networks Mobile Control Gateway (virtual MCG) is now running as a virtualized function on the JunosV App Engine, providing
signaling and control (SGSN/MME) functions to LTE, 3G and 2G radio access networks. As a virtualized network function, mobile operators
can rapidly scale up and down capacity to meet variable demand requirements. Part of Juniper Networks Mobile Packet Core solution, the
virtual MCG is co-developed with Hitachi, the first third-party to virtualize a network service on the JunosV App Engine.
Now shipping, Juniper Networks JunosV App Engine centralizes the development, provisioning and management of both Juniper Networks
and third-party applications on a common platform. This platform also enables customers to grow the compute, memory and processing
resource needed for cloud-based applications and services attached specifically to the MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router.
Step 3: Introduce a centralized controller that enables multiple network and security services to connect in series across devices within
the network. This is called "SDN Service Chaining . Availability 2014 as an enhancement via SDN controller technology acquired from
Contrail Systems
Step 4: Optimize the usage of network and security hardware to deliver high performance. Availability some time in future as
enhancements to the MX and SRX series routers.
No proven ability to deliver MBB core software, SDN is still in its infancy for MBB
Similar to ALU, Cisco, Ericsson and to a lesser extent Huawei, Juniper has a vested interest in protecting their embedded base of Hardware
and Junos OS Software

JDSU estimates that RAN optimization / SON market is growing to $1 billion by 2015; it wants a piece of SON pie,
as well as part in the small cell deployment and monitoring markets
JDSU has more difficult time in SON as it cannot link it to any RAN / Wi-Fi equipment however, this way it may
better retain Ariesos vendor neutrality
JDSU has been a Traffica competitor since it acquired the probe business from Agilent in 2010; now it competes
also in iSON
Arieso is one of NSNs key tool suppliers for NPO services. While Arieso have stated that the acquisition will have
no impact on NSN, this question is being studied presently. In one scenario, JDSU may possess the capabilities to
compete with NSN.

NSN is the first of the large Tier 1 vendors to have embraced the edge computing propositionThe collaboration of
NSN and IBM is a perfect example of Telco IT convergence.
This announcement, in my own view, stands out amongst all the other network vendor announcements at MWC 2013.
That's because it combines the radical concept of edge networking with Big Data analytics and application enablement three areas which are bound to be on the lips of every network vendor and mobile service provider going forward.

Cisco is seeking to aggressively pursue expanding their business with

wireless operators

As a leader in SDN, their new architecture they will be promoting will no

doubt advance SDN concepts

From a policy standpoint, they have a strong packet core base via their
Starent acquisition, but have not been known for having comparable
robustness in DPI and Policy as traditional network vendors or focused
start-ups

Their approach is from an IP & Enterprise perspective so their ability to

immediately address MBB carriers is suspect, in particular in terms or their
analytics.

With the acquisition of Intucell, they will make a push to integrated and
extend into the SON arena with wireless operators

Weve moved past the stage where small cells can be either licensed or
unlicensed; operators need both sets of technologies. At the same time,
weve moved past the stage where architecture (small cell versus macro cell)
trumps the need for service intelligence backed by a solid focus on software.
Cisco has proved that it understands these dynamics.
Gabriel Brown, senior analyst, Heavy Reading
Software tools that automate the process of abstracting and analyzing
performance and service quality information are critical to operators that
want to make real-time, and near real-time, decisions on network
optimization and service delivery. The software layer is emerging as decisive
to the operators ability to both scale and monetize the network.

Feb 13th: Ericsson mobile order management solution slashes

service launch time
http://www.ericsson.com/news/1677747?idx=20

Ericsson has announced the launch of mobile order management solution based on
the acquired ConceptWave portfolio The key use case is for operators to offer a selfservice portal for enterprises for ordering and delivering employee smartphones and
tablets, as well as applications and services that run on them. The new solution is preintegrated with Ericsson Multi Activation, which coordinates infrastructure activation
requests.
A second product launch is SON Policy Manager, designed for setting rules and
policies that steer automatic network behavior. In particular, SON Policy Manager
helps to harmonize and coordinate the behavior of SON features across the full
network scope, adds dynamic policies adapting the network to real world changes,
simplifies configuration, and allows tracing of changes. Ericsson particularly
emphasizes the adaptivity of SON Policy Manager; SON functions can dynamically
adapt to e.g. severe weather events, scheduled events such as sports competitions,
and also unexpected events like power failures or traffic congestion.
The third new product is Plan to Provision for Mobile for automating service
provisioning process; it provides an operational environment that harmonizes the
design and configuration of cell sites, radio parameters, and backhaul transmission.
However, according to Ericsson, these tasks are complex and require direct
intervention of specialists - therefore, full automation is not suitable. Plan-to-Provision
thus provides a set of tools for coordinating and balancing manual and mechanized
processes. For example, inventory assignment when adding new capacity or
rearranging network facilities is automatized. Ericsson emphasizes here the
importance of centralized inventory repository (like they have with Granite).

- NSN does not have an in-house order management

solution; we partner with Comptel to fill the gaps in
service fulfillment.
- Combined with the Ericsson SON Optimization
Manager (launched in MWC a year ago), the SON
centralized software offered by Ericsson sounds eerily
similar to what NSN is also proposing in SON
Operations Manager. The SON Policy Manager will be
available "later this year".
- A key component for Plan-to-Provision is the former
Telcordia Network Engineer product with its GIS view
of network resources.
- Plan to Provision seems a clear competitor for NSN's
Operations on Demand.

Feb. 27th
Ericsson demonstrates Service P
rovider SDN vision at Mobile Wo
rld Congress

This is not really new, as they already mentioned SDN

architecture as a vision at BBWF in 2012.
SDN is the virtualization of network infrastructure via
an abstracted control plane allowing management of
the entire network and even adjacent networks together
with the exposure of telco network APIs
As part of the announcement Ericsson also mentioned
its commitment to deliver the first commercial Service
Provider SDN application in the fourth quarter of 2013.
That initial application will be Service Chaining, which
means that not every packet has to go through every
node all the time, running in the SSR 8000 family of
Smart Service Routers.

This is future story, more one vision following one industry trend called SDN.
SDN is still in the process of development within the ONF (Open Networking Foundation) with plans to
be recognized as an open standard in networking. As such, it is still approximately 5 years away from
commercialization in carrier networks.
Although Ericsson mentions that they are demoing SDN, the demo aspect should be more around some
cloud application running over the SSR 8000 platform.
SSR 8000 is still a proprietary platform from Ericsson and most probably the announced support of
Openstack will also be a proprietary one.

The PR deals with the announcement of Ericsson

supporting CMCC in one demo showcasing one dual
mode HD VoLTE call between TD-LTE and FDD-LTE.

TD-LTE is lagging behind FD-LTE on VOLTE support.

All the current handsets have CSFB. Theres no commercial chipset yet available.
SK Telecom and LG U+ have launched HD-voice in early-2012 ; and NSN is supplier to both operators
on radio.
We can say we have commercial operators running HD VoLTE over NSN infrastructure for at least for 6
months.
ZTE seem to have the earliest availability with their WiseFone 7510 terminal chipset which is quoted as
Q1 2013. However, they obviously havent got a lead customer for terminals yet as all their 2013 terminal
launches are CSFB.
Qualcomm say coming soon for TD-LTE but I haven't seen any timelines.
From NSN core point of view we have done HD VoLTE call with Renesas test terminals and NSN TAS
connected to E/// IMS and NSN LTE radio in TMN Portugal commercial LTE network a couple of months
ago.
Also our internal lab demo for SRVCC in December used HD voice over LTE and HD voice over 3G.
Nobody exactly knows, when CMCC launches TD-LTE commercially even less whether they would
launch VoLTE over TD-LTE.
However it is MWC-time, so everybody looks for his firsts

All in all it's a pure HW and SW Ericsson play.

Nokia Siemens Networks has led the industry in delivering a new approach to networking with Liquid

Orange, Ericsson and Qualcomm hav
e successfully completed the worl
d's first live demonstration of s
upplemental downlink technology o
n L-band frequencies

The trial system combines L-band frequencies Lband (1452-1492 MHz), in the downlink mode with
traditional 2.1 GHz frequencies owned by Orange to
boost downlink capacity. The trial network uses radio
base stations supplied by Ericsson and devices
equipped with Qualcomm chipsets.
The trial will be shown at the Ericsson Experience
stand 2D140, Hall 2 multipurpose room NO.111

This e/// DB-DC-HSDPA just like in our demo, but there is one important difference.
Our DB-DC-HSDPA is using a band combination standardized in Rel-9 and based on bands
standardized and taken in use years ago for 3G. So this feature can be deployed on top of existing
networks as is, or while refarming 900 MHz spectrum from GSM to 3G. This is the focus of this demo.
QC/Ericsson are using one standard band and another band not standardized (yet) for HSDPA use. So
focus of the demo is more in showing that the unpaired band (downlink only) can be used in a DB-DCHSDPA configuration. But as of today it is a proprietary (non-standard) solution.

Software-defined networking: the s
ervice provider perspective

An architecture based on software-defined

networking (SDN) techniques gives operators greater
freedom to balance operational and business
parameters, such as network resilience, service
performance and QoE against opex and capex.
With its beginnings in data-center technology,
software-defined networking (SDN) technology has
developed to the point where it can offer significant
opportunities to service providers.

SDN is the industry buzzword.

Ericsson already announced plans for SDN last years, however they see it more like a technology vision
for the future development of IP based mobile networks
SDN decouples the system that makes decisions about where traffic is sent (the control plane) from the
underlying system that forwards traffic to the selected destination (the data plane). The claim is that this
technology simplifies networking and enables new applications, such as network virtualization in which
the control plane is separated from the data plane and implemented in a software application.
This architecture allows network administrators to have programmable central control of network traffic
without requiring physical access to the network's hardware devices.

Feb 27th: Huawei Releases the SDN-based Mobile

Backhaul Solution- LTEHaul
http://www.huawei.com/en/about-huawei/newsroom/pr
ess-release/hw-204862-mwc.htm

Huawei today released the LTEHaul solution. This SDN-based mobile backhaul solution provides end-toend support for the planning, construction, maintenance, and optimization of mobile backhaul networks.

- SDN is industry buzzword but it is still very much a future concept.

- ATN 9xx router family (ATN 905, ATN 905B, ATN 910 and ATN 950)
were announced already in MWC last year
- What they call mini routers are 1 or 2 U size units installed inside
outdoor cabinet.
-In point to point MW links alignment it is necessary to have line of
sight, doing the alignment remotely is very difficult.
- Flexi Zone Micro (planned in RL50Z) NSN will have a Integrated
GPON/EPON ONT SFP. In WCDMA, also it is planned to be
included in Flexi Multiradio 10 after RU50 and Flexi Lite in RU40

The LTEHaul solution stretches the traditional backhaul network upwards to achieve end-to-end fast
service provisioning, protection switching, and fault locating from eNodeBs to evolved packet cores
(EPCs).
By addressing the large bandwidth and seamless quality service requirements of new LTE/LTE-Aoriented technologies such as eMBMS, COMP, and eICIC, the Huawei LTEHaul solution provides users
with site-free and virtual service access. Meanwhile, the fronthaul, backhaul, and core are unified in the
network structure, thereby overcoming the bottleneck of traditional GSM/UMTS network structure and
bandwidth. By leveraging the SDN technology, the network service bearing and control are separated,
and far-end massive cell site gateways (CSGs) and small cell site gateways (SCSGs) can be managed
on aggregation site gateways (ASGs).
Huawei demonstrated several new LTE products of the LTEHaul solution, including the zero footprint
small-cell mini router ATN 905 (available in both indoor and outdoor ), antenna alignment mini microwave
devices, mini PON, and an aggregation router.

After an EasyRET antenna is powered on, use of electronic tags allow the antenna
to automatically report the RCU bar code to the O&M Center where it is
automatically saved and matched to the EasyRET antenna port and freq band. If a
freq band needs to be adjusted, an RCU bar code can now be queried directly from
the OMC, reducing manual recording of RCU bar codes and preventing adjustment
errors caused by incorrect RCU bar codes.
Rigorous testing has shown Huawei's EasyRET RCU self-lock torque and gearbox
ensures vibration will not change antenna downtilt, reducing chances of change

cards have been RAT specific and not SW defined. Huaweis BBU
requires separate power distribution unit, in many cases additional
transmission unit and weather protection (Cabinet) in OD sites.

Brand new Blade Remote Radio Unit (RRU): Huawei's Blade RRU supports
different modes, frequency bands, and channels. Many leading operators in
Europe, Asia, China, and other countries and regions have successfully used the
Blade RRUs for commercial purposes.
High-performance AAU: The AAU is being tested by Vodafone UK, Deutsche
Telekom, and other leading operators, and its ability to enhance performance by
50% is highly recognized by the operators. At this MWC, Huawei will demonstrate
AAU beamforming together with Vodafone UK.

-Huawei is seen as a technology follower rather than a leader in

Active Antennas. IAS-track follows Eri AIR solution and AAS-track

AtomCell solution: This solution has been put into successful commercial use in
more than 50 countries. Supports power over Ethernet (POE) multiple frequency
bands and modes to offer Wi-Fi. It has been commercialized by Softbank.

-AtomCell announcement is confusing. Huawei has before stated

availability in end 2013. Refers to 50 commercial use countries and

Huawei announced the first commercial deployment of their SmartCare SQI

(Service Quality Improvement) CEM solution, using the GENEX Nastar platform (at
least partially competing against NSN Traffica). The operator in question was not
disclosed. SQI generates a key quality indicator system for operators, allowing for
root cause analysis in trouble situations.
For this first deployment, Huawei cites various improvements, including page
download throughput in web browsing improved by 5.34%, streaming stall
frequency decrease by 9.2%, and data service throughput increased by 2 percent.

-Although Huawei is not very clear as to how the SQI KQIs differ
from their Customer Experience Index (also part of SmartCare
CEM), the focus in SQI seems to be the link to network optimization
in tandem with customer experience improvements.
- However, Huawei does not explicitly call this as combination of
SON and CEM (otherwise they would have made big noise out of it).
- Despite the smallish improvement figures, Huawei says their
solution has "dramatically improved users' satisfaction with web
browsing and streaming services".
- Interestingly, GENEX Nastar is a fairly old product, and Huawei
says operators have been trialing SmartCare SQI. It is then rather
surprising that Huawei can claim the first commercial deployment
only now - but this just shows how late Huawei is in the CEM game
compared to e.g. NSN.

Feb 20th: Huawei to debut Value Growth Solution 2.0 at Mobile World Congress
http://www.huawei.com/en/about-huawei/newsroom/press-release/hw-204426-debut.htm

Huawei has launched version 2.0 of Huawei Value Growth Solution (VGS),
which combines deep packet inspection (DPI), policy control, charging,
bandwidth management and content delivery optimization. The initial
version was officially announced in May 2012, with already 30 references
at that time (100+ currently). The solution provides network, customer and
market insight, network insight, as well as content insight, but Huawei
release was very vague on the new features added to the solution in this
new release.

-Huawei clearly associates VGS to CEM (particularly,

the on-device customer service portal), but strangely
handles VGS as a totally separate offering from their
overall CEM family, SmartCare. VGS does offer similar
insights to some of the CEM on Demand content
packs (and has been in competition against CEMoD in
customer cases), but VGS is more BSS focused and
so far does not offer SaaS, nor cannot match the full
complement of the NSN CEMoD content packs (and
due to the rigid components underlying VGS, has not
the flexibility of CEMoD).
- Given the CEM focus on customer self care and
BSS-related aspects, the solution more directly
competes with Alcatel-Lucent's Smart Plan solution
(which also comes with a self care application for
subscriber mobile devices).
- The traffic management aspect is also in competition
with NSN's traffic steering solution

Huawei has launched the SmartCare IDEAL Use Cases (IDEAL standing
for Inter-Departmental Experience Associated Life-Cycle). IDEAL forms a
library of modular functions aimed at assisting operators in improving
customer experience throughout the different stages in the subscriber life
cycle, while making links to the different departments in the carrier
organization.
-This inter-departmental angle, attempting to bridge the silo gaps, is,
according to Huawei, the differentiator allowing it to outperform its
competitors in CEM.
-- IDEAL library uses data from various organizational areas to generate
customer experience indicators. An example use case is poor quality in

-Despite Huawei's claim, CEMoD provides similar

cross-organizational view into CEM via easy-to-use
portal, CEI (Customer Experience Index) and much
more (and also via SaaS model) - NSN merely doesn't
emphasize the silo-gapping aspect like Huawei does.

-Since September 2012 DragonWave has been able to achieve up to

2 Gbps using a more efficient modulation modes, i.e. 2048 QAM
instead of 1024 QAM , highlighted by ZTE.
- With 2048 QAM, customers can achieve greater than 500 Mbps of
transport in a Horizon Compact+ all-outdoor system and up to 1 Gbps
when DragonWave's Bandwidth Accelerator compression technology
is included.
- Horizon Quantum can deliver two carriers per radio, each capable of
higher order modulation and compression, delivering up to 2 Gbps in
a single radio.

ZTE launched a new full-outdoor microwave transmission system based on patented technology.
The 1024QAM modulation mode on the ZXMW NR8950 system uses high modulation and multi-level data
compression technology to increase throughput substantially, with a theoretical speed of 1.6 Gigabits per second.
The ZXMW NR8950 system is equipped with a patented storage solution that is remotely configurable. A built-in
MicroSD card can store data on configuration set-up, license, and log information, enabling transfer settings from
existing equipment to new equipment.
The ZXMW NR8950 can interchange with the indoor units of the ZXMW NR8250 for hosting operation mode,
reducing the difficulty of commissioning and maintenance.

ZTE announced it conducted a High Definition (HD) voice over LTE (VoLTE) call using enhanced Single Radio Voice
Call Continuity (eSRVCC) for Hong Kongs CSL.

-In Nov last year ZTE claimed the Industry first eSRVCC call but
Huawei and T-Mobile claimed doing the same already earlier in
October.
-The difference with this ZTE PR is the HD voice codec and
mentioned customer(CSL) .
-In the absence of new LTE customers ZTE is touting the same ones
as in last year s MWC (CSL).
-NSN has done WB-AMR SRVCC voice call (LTE-3G) in 28th of Dec
2012 but no eSRVCC yet.
-This PR shows again how desperately ZTE wants to get to the LTE /
VoLTE game.

With ZTEs technology solutions in 4G, CSL successfully conducted a HD VoLTE call hand-off to 3G with eSRVCC
based pre-commercial network. HD voice will keep service continuity before and after hand-off. All network
equipment used in this demonstration was provided by ZTE. This HD VoLTE call was said to have end-to-end QoS
assurance .
The Adaptive Multi Rate Wideband(AMR-WB) speech codec was supported in the HD VoLTE call demonstration.
This HD voice speech codec provides improved speech quality due to a wider speech bandwidth from 50 to
7,000Hz.

Feb 25th: ZTE Launches Magic Series RRUs 58 Percent Smaller than
Industry Standard
http://wwwen.zte.com.cn/en/press_center/news/201302/t20130225_387
794.html

ZTE has launched the Magic range of RRUs based on ZTEs SDR base stations,
offering smaller size, lower power consumption, multi-mode and multi-sector
performance. The small but high-performance Magic RRUs can be installed in just
five minutes.

-ZTE has a history of launching radios that never materialize. For

example ZTE had a 3-sector RRH for WCDMA roadmaps already
in 2009-2010, but it never saw the day of light.
-As such the 3-sector RRH is a direct competitor for Flexi 3-sector
RF module, however the size, volume and availability of this
product is left out from the PR. Probably for a good reason. Power
consumption claims are meaningless without reference.
-The size of the 2x60W RRH is questionable without fan cooling as
ZTE uses the very same electrical components as all vendors. For
example the corresponding volume of NSNs convectional cooled
2x60W RRH is about 22L, while most of the volume being taken
by cooling fins.
-Huawei has introduced similar size , but lower output power radios
under the Blade RRU label, however those radios are also
believed to have challenges with sufficient cooling.
-The five minute installation story is copied from Huawei

The Magic series includes 3 RRU modules for reduced power consumption, fast site
construction, small space occupation, and multi-mode coexistence.
The smallest RRU in the Magic series, the 80W module, has a size/weight of
9.9L/12kg, a new record in the industry. This is 58 percent smaller than the average
RRU.
At the top of the Magic range, the 260W module is just 12L . Suited to scenarios
requiring large capacity, wide coverage, and the coexistence of multiple radio
modes. Single RRU can provide enough bandwidth coverage for multi-mode
application, providing sufficient resources for a GSM/UMTS/LTE system.
Another module is equipped with 3T RF modules, suitable for deployment on threesector sites, providing coverage over three sectors and reducing equipment
purchase costs. The 3T module also has low power consumption - as much as 14
percent less than traditional solutions.

-Cloud radio is a set of network optimization techniques

that eliminate inter-cell interference in time, space, and
frequency.
-Cloud radio is also a next-generation wireless solution
based on ZTEs SDR multimode radio platform and C-RAN
solution. Cloud radio involves cloud scheduler and cloud
coordination. The cloud scheduler schedules network
resources in a unified manner. This enables real-time
resource scheduling and allocation according to user
distribution, service type, traffic flow, and cell interference.
Cloud coordination is used for seamless network
coordination. Multilayer coordination enhances
transmission gain and improves user experience.
- Topic of a panel discussion in LTE forum on Monday 25th

Feb 8th: ZTE predicts FDD LTE will die in favour of TDD LTE:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/02/08/zte_fdd_tdd_lte_wars/

- ZTE VP of Wireless Sean Cai was quoted in a news article, selected parts:
- The Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) flavour of LTE will be shunned eventually in
favour of Time Division Duplexing (TDD), its just a case of when, according to
Chinese telecoms infrastructure giant ZTE.
-Cai was less willing to predict the end of the 3G TD-SCDMA which, despite
technically being an international standard, is virtually unheard of outside of China.
- Cai was speaking ahead of Mobile World Congress, which opens later this month,
when he said ZTE would be making some announcements on Radio Access Network
technology. The firm has apparently worked hard in this area, with the goal of making
the network more efficient by ensuring it can adapt dynamically to user behaviour.
- Spectrum sharing, carrier aggregation, small cells and white space technology will
also become vital in the coming years to coping with the flood of data and diminishing
bandwidth, argued Cai.

- ZTE has had a lackluster success in the FDD LTE Networks that
represent the vast majority of LTE networks being live, under
implementation and being planned.
- In 3Q12 DellOro estimated the total 2012 FDD LTE revenues to add up
to $5,46 B compared to TDD LTEs $726 M. More than 7 times higher.
- ZTE was ranked to #2 in TDD LTE MS by DellOro in 3Q12 but with only
$56,3 M revenues for 3Q12. In comparison NSNs FDD LTE revenue for
the same period were estimated at $352,5 M by DellOro
- ZTE will find little understanding for this vision and it will not resonate well
with FDD LTE Operators. We should also actively spread the word that
ZTE does not believe in FDD LTE.

Feb 4th: ZTE Unveils New LTE Small-Cell Backhaul Solutions:

http://wwwen.zte.com.cn/en/press_center/news/201302/t2013
0204_386289.html

- ZTE announced a new series of backhaul solutions for LTE Small Cell technology
- ZTEs new series of backhaul solutions for LTE Small was said to support for a wide
range of data transmission methods, including packet bearer network backhaul
solution, fixed broadband backhaul solution (through PON, xDSL and Cable),
Microwave Wireless backhaul solution, WiFi Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) Wireless
backhaul solution and TD-LTE backhaul solution.
- ZTE also touted its multi-module support saying that the LTE Small Cell backhaul
solutions can be fitted with transmission modules for DSL, PON, Cable, Wifi and TDLTE.

- As usual the ZTE announcement is very vague offering almost no details

and concrete solutions.
- Current Analysis titled their response for this announcement as follows:
ZTE Makes Proactive, but Hazy, Small-Cell Backhaul Pitch; Operators
Need Clarity, Not a Laundry List:
- No explanation of how various approaches should be employed relative
to one another
- Emphasis on microwave rather than millimeter wave solutions ignores
the most common approaches to small-cell backhaul
- Heavy wireline emphasis, coupled with omission of deployment scenario
challenges, weakens credibility
- Differentiating value unclear despite unconventional emphasis on
wireline, microwave
- Multi-module support concept lacks specifics
- Weakened by the fact that ZTE has not been highly vocal on small cells
-Lack of branding misses an opportunity to capture mindshare, reinforce
messaging

increasing demand for capacity.

Adding some arrays of active elements to create Small Cell

Even Eri brought it up in some AIR evolution paper.
NEC role here appear minor, probably just happy to be able

Feb 5th: Amdocs launches CES 9

http://www.amdocs.com/ces9press

Amdocs has launched version 9 of its CES (Customer Experience

Systems) suite, with several new applications having a strong self-care
emphasis, including Amdocs Multichannel Self Service (any device /
operating system) and Amdocs Proactive Care (proactive real-time
notifications and recommendations to subscribers based on big data
analytics). In addition, CES 9 includes Amdocs Omni Convergent Charging
(integrates real-time charging, policy control, product catalog and service
platform), Amdocs Business Building Blocks (pre-integrated BSS-related
software packs for specific use cases), Amdocs Network Navigator
(inventory management overlay displaying complex network hierarchies),
Amdocs OTT Monetization (partner price plans enhanced with QoS
capabilities & predictive analytics.

-The launch press release does not save dramatic adjectives; it describes
CES 9 as "revolutionizing customer experience", and as being "the only
suite to deliver real-time integration across network control, BSS and
OSS", and as being "the only integrated suite that enables service
providers to unleash the power of experience by rapidly launching and
monetizing innovative offers, personalizing every interaction with real-time
insight, and empowering customers to take control of their experiences
across any channel, network, service or device - while delivering
operational efficiencies.
- The focus is heavily on self-care and proactive care, contacting
subscribers via self-service applications in their smart devices.
- To give further proof, Amdocs also revealed results of a survey showing
that vast majority of customers would recommend their service provider if
they received relevant proactive notifications and had simple self-service
apps on their devices.
- A majority of subscribers would prefer using mobile apps than calling
operator contact center.
- Amdocs' claim of being the only CEM suite integrating OSS, BSS and
network control is also interesting, and one can't but wonder whether this
is more or less directed against NSN, which no longer has BSS in its
portfolio.
- In any case, Amdocs' new release is a good reminder that vendors define
CEM very differently, and there are many approach angles. Amdocs
targets CRM and care (particularly self-care in this case), whereas NSN
approach is more OSS-led, and requires much deeper telecom know-how,
which Amdocs lacks.

Feb 18th: Celcite showcases next generation network management at

Mobile World Congress
http://www.celcite.com/sites/default/files/CC0028_MWC13_Final-3.pdf

Celcite has announced a new version of COPS SON, which it boldly

claims will "revolutionise the way operators manage their networks". The
focus in the new release is added automation and the in-built autonomous
closed-loop actions for self-configuration, self-optimization and selfhealing. The SON policies include automatic neighbor relation (ANR), load
balancing, self healing, automatic parameter optimization, and plug-andplay module for self-configuration when a new site is deployed.

- Celcite is not very clear as to what is really new in COPS SON (apart
from AIC module), but there seems to be more focus in automation,
making COPS a more direct competitor for SON Operations Manager

Celcite also added COPS - AIC (Automatic Intelligence Correlation) to its

portfolio. Celcite describes AIC as an automated network management
platform that support multi-vendor multi-technology wireless networks. AIC
engine collects automatically various data such as performance counters,
configuration data, faults, alarms, trouble tickets, mobile measurements
and geo-location data, correlating these to provide "triage" between RF

Aircom has announced the launch of I-VIEW SON, delivering a multivendor, multi-technology centralized SON solution built on Aircom's IVIEW framework. I-VIEW SON combines network data, root cause
analysis algorithms and automatic configuration algorithms to validate and
implement network parameter changes either in open loop mode (with
engineer intervention) or automatically in closed loop mode. Aircom cites
several improvements achieved in live network trials, including 10-20
percent improvements in network coverage, 20 percent improvements in
call establishment, and 30% reduction in dropped call rates

- Analysts recognize Aircom as the market leader in planning &

engineering segment, and Aircom has a comprehensive portfolio in this
area, including process management. I-VIEW SON has similar capabilities
as with the SON offering from Ericsson and NSN, including multitechnology / multi-vendor support, open/closed loop, and similar process
support with automated detection followed by analysis and action.
However, closed loop SON is certainly challenging for non-telecom
equipment vendors, and possibly a weakness for Aircom, too. Aircom does
not disclose much details of their solution, so it is uncertain whether they
put more focus on LTE 3GPP SON features or on some other, more novel
area such as traffic steering, capacity management and QoE-based
optimization. Aircom's strategy related to SON coordination is also unclear
at this point. Aircom has not announced any commercial reference
customers, but given their large customer base, they can potentially
become a substantial SON player in the future, and we should keep a
close eye on them.
