Denotation: The actual


definition of a word. (Hint:
Denotation = Definition)
Example:
Gray a color shade that
appears as a mixture of white
and black

Connotation: the emotions or


feelings that come from a word. ***These
can be either positive, negative, or neutral.

Example:
Gray feels like a sad, dreary
winter day / negative

Negative vs. positive


Connotations can either be
negative, positive, or neutral.
Examples of words with
positive connotations: love,
kindness, caring, hug, tenderhearted, angel, relax, family,
vacation
Examples of words with
negative connotations: death,
sadness, destruction, killing,

accident, funeral, drown,


detention, yelling
Sometimes a word can have a
neutral connotation if that
word doesnt create either a
good or a bad feeling

Example: San Francisco 49ers


Denotation: a 49er is a miner
who took part in the California
Gold Rush
Connotation: I think the name
49er has a positive connotation
because those people must have
been tough and they took risks
to find gold. Also, some became
rich!
