Team Assignment: Nutrition App for Campus

by: Alyson Fromm, Julia Mason, Emmaline Mauritson
INPUTS
NEEDS ASSESSMENT: Date, Time, Place, Audience Characteristics, Special Considerations,
Potential Topics
PRESENTATION: Santa Lucia Dorm, March 7th at 7:00pm
We met with the dorm supervisor of Santa Lucia. He told us that a student recently had to
be hospitalized due to lack of knowledge of where to get the right food on campus, so
knowing where one can eat on campus who has a diet restriction would be beneficial.
Mustang News front page cover on February 8th, 2016: Study finds most Campus
Dining food unhealthy -- shows the need for students to understand healthy eating
Potential topic - how to eat on campus using the app to make mindful food choices
o how you can utilize the app to get a meal on campus that is MyPlate qualified
o easily accessible nutrition information formatted for mobile access
o education to help students help understand that nutrition information
The lesson will take place at the Santa Lucia/ North Mountain dorms on campus, so the audience
will consist of Cal Poly freshmen.
The audience that we are targeting is mainly engineering, math, and physics majors. We
want to give them more information on nutrition because they make up the majority of
our school and tend to have more limited knowledge on the subject.
BEHAVIORAL GOAL(S) FOR THE SELECTED TOPIC
1. The learner will be able to explain the purpose and function of the Poly Health app that is
coming to Cal Poly and how it can be used to motivate their eating choices on campus.
2. The learner will be able to plan a meal on campus using the app to accommodate their
food needs and satisfy My Plate.
OUTPUTS
ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE BEHAVIORAL GOALS
1. Students will begin by answering a short FFQ. This will be presented in an online,
interactive format via SurveyMonkey to mirror the technology based interaction we are
providing with our app. We will provide them with the link to view the questionnaire on
their phones and their answers will be projected in real time on our screen. This will
double as feedback for us as to what students actually eat on campus. If we see a category
that has excessively high or low intake, such as very low fruit intake, we can emphasize
this during our time and further tailor the presentation to their needs.
2. Students will be provided with handouts at the beginning of our presentation where they
can fill in their favorite meals to eat on campus. At the end of the presentation, the learner
will use a designated box on the handout to modify their favorite meals to better satisfy
MyPlate.
3. At the end of the presentation, students will be asked to discuss what they like and dislike
about the app. This will allow actual users to provide feedback which can help us to
modify the app to better suit their needs. Students will also be asked for suggestions to
discover if there are any major holes in Campus Dining that they would like to see

addressed and that we have not been yet filled with our app. This will give us a chance to
fill that need.
