Arts and Humanities der University of Cambridge eingeladen worden, an der
Erffnungskonferenz im Rahmen des Cambridge Arts and Humanities Research
CouncilDoctoralTrainingPartnershipteilzunehmen.
Fr Klner Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden stehen 10 Stipendien (Reise und

TheCambridgeDoctoralTrainingPartnership(DTP)invitescontributionstothe
inauguralAnnualCambridgeAHRCDTPConference,whichwillinvestigatetheplace
themomentoftimeintheartsandhumanities.Theconferencewillbringtogether
studentsfromwithinthecurrentCambridgeDTPcohortandfrompartnerinstitutions
ofinternationalstandingtofacilitatetheinterdisciplinaryexchangeofideasandthe
developmentofcollaborativenetworks.TheCambridgeDTPisfundedbytheArtsand
HumanitiesResearchCouncilUK(AHRC)andexiststoprovidestudentshipsand
personalandprofessionaldevelopmentatPhDlevelinthefollowingbroadAHRC
designatedsubjectdomains:history,thoughtandsystemsofbelief;creativeand
performingarts;culturesandheritage;languagesandliteratures.Weinvite
contributionsfromanyoftheprecedingsubjectareas,andparticularlythosewiththe

Incontemporaryscholarship,timeisnotrunningout,butrushingin.If,asRichard
Feynmanoncequipped,timeiswhathappenswhennothingelsedoes,howshould
researchintheartsandhumanitiesrespondtoit?Ratherthanseeingitasthe
isolatablebasematteroftheuniverse,wemightfocusourattentiononhownothing
elsehappenswithouttime,howitisfoldedintoourvariousobjectsofinquiryand
criticalpractices.
Forexample,thehistoricdebatesamonganthropologistsandlinguistsaboutwhether
culturessuchastheNuerandHopiaretimeless(orwhytheymightseemso)
speakstothechallengesofdefiningtemporalityacrosscultural,historicaland
disciplinarybarriers.Butthedangersoferasingthesedifficultiesarejustasserious.In
24/7,JonathanCraryarguesthatthespreadofglobalcapitalismandimmediate
communicationtechnologieshavecreatedatimeofindifferenceinwhich
experiencesofinterruptionandrevolution,developmentandfulfilmentarevanishing
beforeaprincipleofcontinuousfunctioning.Yetdoessuchanargumentoverlook
stilltobearticulatedwaysinwhichtemporalconventionsarebeingradically

reshapedbycontemporarysubjectsandcommunities,aswellasemergentresponses
toourfragileecologicalposition,andthefactthatwemightbelivingthroughthe
endof(our?human?)time?
Wethereforecallforpapersdealingwithwaysofimaginingandtheorisingtime,
methodologicalissuesofworkingwithtime,orspecificcasestudiesthatexemplify
theproblemsandpossibilitiesoftimeasaconcept.
Withoutwishingtobeprescriptiveorexhaustiveinanyway,paperscoulddealwith
theorderingoftime:
Forms of change and continuity: progress, decline, repetition, tradition,
revolutionandevolution.
Divisions of time: work/leisure; childhood/adulthood; past/future; seasons,
erasorepisodes;geologicalperiodicity.
Theconstructionofnarrativeorchronology.
Experienceandinterpretationoftime:speed,slownessandacceleration;the
senseofbeingtimerichortimepoor.
Orcouldconsidertemporalpractices:
Interactions with time: spending, telling, losing, wasting, stopping, queering,
saving,redeeming,andfritteringawaythetime.
Creative and artistic practices: contemplating, recording, composing, making
andstorytelling.
Entertainmentandtheuseofsparetime:watching,reading,listening,idling,
sleepingandsocialising.
Attentionisguidedtowardsdifferenttheoreticalmodelsoftimeandtemporality.
Thesecouldinclude:
Nietzsches idea of eternal recurrence and its development in Derrida or in
HeideggersBeingandTime.
HegelianandMarxistdialecticsorAdornosnegativedialecticandtheirimpact
uponunderstandingsofthehistorical.
Foucaultsnotionofthearchaeologyofknowledge,orhisdiscussionsofpost
modernityandtheavantgarde.
Theconceptoftheanthropoceneemergingfromthegeologicalandclimate
sciences.
Papersarealsowelcomedwhichconsiderand/ormodeltheintersectionsbetween
theoryandcriticalpractice,including:

Synchronicanddiachronicformsofanalysis.
Schoolsofhistoriography,canonformation,scholarlyfashionsandtrends.
Phenomenologyandhermeneutics.
Theabovearejustaseriesofprompts,andwelookforwardtoreceivingarangeof
diverseapproaches.Proposalswillberewardedfor:directrelevancetothe
conferencesthemeofTimeandTemporality,clearrelevancetocurrentresearch
contexts,andthepotentialforwideinterdisciplinaryinterest.
Proposalsfor20minutepapersshouldbeofnomorethan300words.
