Standards
10.4 Students analyze patterns of global change in the era of
New Imperialism in at least two of the following regions or
countries: Africa, Southeast Asia, China, India, Latin America,
and the Philippines.
Objectives Students will learn about major and current events that resulted
out of the Industrial Revolution. Students will gain knowledge
about the New Stage of Imperialism and the Scramble for Africa.
Students will gain a greater understanding of the advancements
of society at the time: transportation, communication, medicine
and ideologies
Introduction Built on prior knowledge, what do you know about the world in
/ Overview 1900s? what was going on at that time? What countries are the
most powerful and why?
Introduce who were the major Imperial powers at the time and
how do they got to that point.

Context
The industrial revolution made possible this new age of
imperialism. The 19th century was seen as an age of progress by
the Europeans. It was an age of technological and intellectual
advances. Some of the most prominent advance were in:
Transportation, Communication, Production and Medicine. Britain
in particular, was able to acquire a vast amount of colonies
around the globe. Apart from being the first country to
industrialize, Britain had the most powerful naval force to rule
the seas. Moreover, other countries who were at the top of their
power were: France, Germany, The United States and Japan.
However, then came the 20th century and thing started to
change. The Great War was the first total war in history.

Preview

Students will create a map that shows the major Imperial Powers
at the time around the world.
Students will discuss in group what they know about the Topic of
the lecture.
50 Minutes Class Meeting
Using a clicker, students will complete pop quizzes (may include
extra credit points) during the lecture. This is aim to be as a poll
to make sure that the students are understanding the content
discuss. Students will talk to a peer next to them explaining
what the lecture was about at the beginning of the next class
meeting.
Students will be asked to do a 3 minute quick write as a
reflection of what the lecture was about (it could be an outline,
simple sketch, key words, etc.)
