Introduction
Childrenarebornwiththeabilitytolearnlanguage.Acrosstheentireworld,thisisthe
truth.Thereisnosingleenvironmentinwhichchildrenlearnlanguage(Piper,2012).While
thisistrueandtheywilleventuallylearntocommunicatewithlanguageineventhemostdireof
circumstances,wecancertainlyenrichtheenvironmentandprovideopportunitiestolearnand
practicelanguageskills.

ExplanationofFloorPlan
Iwashavingtechnicaldifficultieswiththeprogramrepeatedlyfrozen,soIwasunableto
putlabelsontheactualfloorplan.Iwillinsteadexplainithere.Theupperleftcorner
constitutestheLibrarycenter.totherightofitistheteacherdeskwithstoragebehindit.The
upperrightcorneristhesciencecenter.Inthemiddleoftheroomwehavestudenttablesto
workonwholegroupactivities,andofftotherightcenteracirclerugformorningmeetings.
Thebottomleftcorneristheartcenter,nexttothatisthedramaticplayarea,andinthebottom
rightcornerwehavetheblockcenter.ThefourareasI
willfocusonexplainingwithregardstolanguageacquisitionarethelibrarycenter,thescience
center,theartcenter,andtheblockcenter.
LibraryCenter
Mylibrarycenterisonalarge,carpetedareainonecorneroftheroom.Onewallhas
bookshelvesfilledwithbookspertainingtowhateverthemethechildrenarecurrentlylearning
about.Thesecondwallhasapuppettheatrewithachestfullofpuppetsthatincludepeopleand
animalsthatcanbecommonlyfoundinstories.Borderingtheothertwosidesofthecarpetare
childsizedcouchandchairs.Thisareawillpromotelanguagedevelopmentbetweenthechildren
becausethefurnitureprovidesahomelikesettingencouragingthemtobecomfortableand
relaxed.Theycansitandsocializeastheywouldwiththeirownfamilyathome.Thebooksand
puppetsprovideencouragementforthechildrentoreenactstoriesthattheyhaveheard.Theycan

worktogethertocomeupwithpuppetshows,andcommunicatewiththeirpeersbyretelling
stories.

ScienceCenter
Mysciencecenterhastworectangulartables,andtwoshelvesofeasilyaccessible
supplies.Thetablesareagoodsizetopromoteworkingtogetheramongmultiplestudents.The
shelveswillcontainobjectssuchasoversizedmagnifiersandmagnets,scentjars,prisms,and
othermanipulatives.Therewillbemultipleofeachitemsothatchildrencanhaveparallel
investigationsgoingon,orworktogethertoinvestigateobjects.Thiswillencourageinteraction
andexplorationofsciencevocabulary.
ArtCenter
Theartcenterconsistsofthreeeasels,alargekidneytable,andtwoeasilyaccessible
shelvesfilledwithartsupplies.Theeaselswillalwayshavelargepaperonthem,andthe
materialsinthetrayswillvaryfromdifferenttypesandtexturesofpaints,tochalksandother
items.Theeaselsaresidebysidesochildrencanwatchandcommentonotherswork.The
largekidneytableprovidesroomforthechildrentoworktogetheronasmallgroupprojectsuch
asacollage.Theshelveswillgivethechildrenaccesstoexploredifferenttypesofartmaterials.
Therewillbealargesheetofbutcherpapersetinthemiddleofthekidneytableeachday.
Childrenwillbeabletousethedayssuppliestocreatetheirownsectiononthepaperto
ultimatelycomeupwithaclasspainting,drawing,orcollage.

BlockCenter
Theblockcenterwillconsistofaflatcarpet...easytobalanceblockson,buttogivesome
cushiontomufflethesoundofbuildingcollapses!Itwillhavetwolargeshelvesofdifferent
typesofblocksandbuildingsupplies.Blockcentersarevitaltoanypreschoolclassroom
becauseinthiscenter

childrenimprovetheirmotorskills,practiceproblemsolving,andlearntoworkwiththeir
classmates(

,2016).Therewillberoomforuptosixchildrentoplayinthis
centeratatime.Alongwiththetraditionalwoodblocksandoversizedlegos,otherbuilding
materialswillberegularlyintroducedtosparkcreativityandcooperationamongthechildren.
Oneexamplewouldbelargecardboardboxes,alongwithheavydutymarkers.Thesethingswill
excitethechildrenandencouragethemtoworktogether.Therewillalsobeatubofpaperand
pencilstodrawandshareblueprints.
TeacherInvolvement/Assessment
Theroleoftheteacherwillbetocirculateamongthechildreninthecentersthroughout
theday.Heorshewillfacilitatetheopeningofdiscussions,askingchildrenaboutwhattheyare
doing,andmodellinginvitingotherstojointhem.Dailyobservationswillbemadetoseeifthe
activitiesandsetupofthecentersareencouragingthechildrentoworktogetherand
communicate.
