PBIS & Being WEST

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports

Three Positives for the Week

Work with a partner to come up with three
positive things you have seen or heard about
here at West in the past week.
Be ready to share out in a few.

What does PBIS look like at West?

1.POP QUIZ: take a moment to write what it
means to Be WEST.
2.Discuss - How did we do?

Current System
Which parts of Be WEST
did you remember?
Which ones did you
miss?
What are your
challenges with the
current language?

Lets Freshen Up!

Students receive verbal praise for
following rules
Corrections are made by restating
the rule/expectation and stating
the appropriate replacement
behavior
Maintains a five-to-one ratio of
positive to negative statements

Past rewards
In past years, we had the WAHAWK Code
cards - an incentive system to reward
students
Movie day, free time, bathroom
passes, preferential seating, etc.
Entry into dodgeball tournament,
drawings, and store purchases
Code cards were used in addition to or in
conjunction with verbal praise

Brainstorm - How can we implement this year?

At present, our budget is undefined
Jot down ideas regarding how to acknowledge
and reward students
Do we want paper copies like before?
Announcements?
What kind of free incentives do we want students to be
able to earn?

Share out with the group

Management Reminders
Proximity - move around - get close
Make assignments meaningful and engaging
Make time to call some parents for the GOOD
stuff
Register communication on PLP
Follow PBIS protocols... especially this early
in the year

In redirecting behaviors,
language should be
consistent throughout the
building
Expectations should be
defined, taught, and
reinforced consistently
Use the posters as reference
points for redirections

Old Signs
Please take down any old signage from the
previous years
- Duty, Honor, Service
- The red ovals on the sign say Classroom

- WAHAWK Code sign

- It has pink on it (and probably has Success
spelled wrong).

What Will You Do Now?: Rephrase/Replace

Hey, get over here!
QUIET!
Absolutely not, GET OUT!
Knock it off or you are going to wish you had.
Im not going to talk over you. Quit.
Im not dealing with this all year-Im sick of it!
You know better than that!

Our data from

last year would
suggest we
had issues
with Tardies,
Dress Code,
Defiance/
Disrespect,
and Abusive
Language.

Major-Minor Matrix
As we revamp our PBIS expectations, so do
the district and state.
We have a new Major-Minor Matrix to tie to
undesirable behaviors and determine: what
is office-managed versus teacher-managed.
We will preview this a bit now, and it will
eventually be available on StaffCommon.

Staff of the Week

Same idea as last year BUT
we are doing it weekly not
monthly
Send nominations the same
way as last year (through
email to Reimer or in her
mailbox)
Announcements every
Monday

Exit Slip - On Your Index Cards

1.Name
2.Session Attended (Be WEST 1, 2, or 3)
3.What new information did you gain from this
session?
4.How do you plan to incorporate this within your
teaching in the next few weeks?

Taking the Time

There is a lot of focus on undesirable
behaviors.
We use ODR/Attendance data to drive our
decisions.
Lets not forget those students in the 80%!

Positive Referral Data

Approximately 50
positive referrals for
the 2014-2015 school
year
699 major referrals for
Defiance & Disrespect
alone.
Lets cut into that ratio!
