The video Billie Jean by Michael Jackson directed by
Steven Barron and is rhythm and blues, funk and dancepop I can tell this by the rhythm and beat of the music
as it is very upbeat even though its shot in dark alleys.
The video is very surrealist as the lyrics of the song
dont really link to the song for example Billie jean is
not my lover Michael Jackson is just walking along the
street signing along with lighting up the floor each step.
I can tell this by how the lyric and the video itself doesnt match up most of the
time as it isnt clear what the video is actually portraying. The music video in
whole doesnt have a meaning as explained by Michael Jackson and the director
themselves. The lighting is very unique as when Michael is walking through the
city the path below him light up as he steps. The costume doesnt really change
throughout the video. As there isnt a meaning behind the video
neither the style nor genre really link into what the video is
trying to present.
The Music Video My Name is by Eminem is a Rap and R&B
song, which was directed by Phillip Atwell and Dr Dre. This video
is narrative music video as during the video it plays out the
lyrics to some consent as this will engage the audience with the
song as usually audiences can relate to the experiences and thus is technique to
make the song more popular. The pictures shown in the video relate to the type
of genre the music is and what the lyrics are saying. I can tell that its in this
style as the lyrics and video are both synchronised together and the video is
acting out the lyrics. As when he mentions that his English teacher wanted to
fornicate with him and then goes on to say he chased the English teacher around
the room the video clearly shows Eminem running after a teacher. As the genre
of the music is R&B and Rap it links well to the music video as it is telling what
has happened in his life before and after he started rapping which is the
stereotype topic of all rap and R&B music. Most of the lighting is artificial which
is create by separate light other than natural light. The location of the video
changes nearly every verse as each verse is sharing a different moment in
Eminems life. The meaning behind the video is showing what the artists life was
like before and after he started rapping but also there are some made up things
there as well. This music video was so successful was
the song was so catchy and very easy to remember.
The video Hey Ya! by Outkast directed by Bryan
Barber and is a Alternative hip hop and funk record I can
tell this by the lyrics as there are a twist on the
stereotypical R&B song lyrics. This video is a
performance video as the band are preforming their
song a large audience films them as it uses a multiple
different camera shots in a short amount of time to make it look visually
interesting. I can tell that it is this style as the band is preforming towards an

audience with cameras filming them. As the videos is based on the landmark
performance by the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. This was because the
artists though this type of video would suit the musical structure. The location of
the video is meant to be set in a studio in London. The sound used in the video is
all non-diegetic apart from the beginning when they are backstage. Both the
costumes of the band and the props used in the video are all made to make it
look like the 70s. The meaning of this video is to show the audience what 70
shows where like and what type of things happened during them. At the start of
the video there was another episode as it has carried on from another music
video that they made before this one. This links to the genre of the song as its a
very 70s song due to the rhythm. This music video was so successful because
the song is so catchy and can get stuck in your head very easily.
OK GOs This Too Shall Pass directed by
James Frost is an alternative rock record. It is
a homemade video as shown in the video
they use the Rube Goldberg machine, which
in plain English is one of those long,
connected, set-ups that start with dominos.
This is unique as this band has their own style
for all of their music videos. It can tell it is
done in this style because the video is filmed in one shot and a high budget
camera would be too heavy and a struggle to move that quickly. At the start of
the video they are using diegetic sound but only for that part as throughout the
rest of the video they use non-diegetic sound. The location of the video stays the
same throughout inside a warehouse. There were a lot of props used for this
video as they need the Rude Goldberg machine to last for how long the song was
and this did take them a long time to get this right as a lot of things could go
wrong. The reason why I think this music video was so successful was because
on the scale of the machine and what kinds of things they used to make it work.
And the ability to change device to the beat. The bit with the spoons and glasses
in remarkable this would have taken them days to set up and complete
successfully.
The music video Sabotage by Beastie Boys directed by Spike Jonze is a Rap
Rock record as it has song rap like lines in the song. This is a parody music video
as it is based on those 70 cop shows that used to show. I can tell its in this style
because the artists are all dressed up like policemen from the 70s and the intro
on the song is just like the intro to those 70 police shows. The genre links the
meaning because these where the kind of style of song that would play for the
intros and outros of these types of programs. All of the sound used is nondiegetic as there is no sound originating from the video recording. The location in
which the video is set is Los Angeles which is where these 70 police show where
mainly set with the classic locations. The costumes used are just like the ones in
those shows including the sun glasses that every policeman used to wear. This
helps it achieve this style because it gives it the feel like you are about to watch
a 70s police TV show. I think this music was so successful because it is a perfect

replica of the 70 police TV shows and that is

expressed in the way the video is shot.
