ABOUT THIS EUCHARIST

For more than ten years at Saint Johns, a worshiping community called The Wilderness has gathered
on Sunday nights. Contemplative, creative, experimental, ancient/modern - these words try but fail
to capture all that characterizes the ever evolving liturgy.
Tonights Eucharist is heavily influenced by the current Lenten season of the Wilderness, called
Appaling Silence. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, Our lives begin to end the day we become silent
about things that matter. We are constantly tempted to remain silent about things that matter. Too
often we take the bait. And though our silence about the waywardness of the world may make living
in it somehow easier, it also makes us complicit. And so we ask tonight, What silences have you
kept when your voice mattered? What have we as a community been too quiet about?
As we journey toward the renewal of our Baptismal promises at Easter, let us turn from our hesitance
to shout from our lips the very hope Easter reveals and banish our reticence to show it in our lives.
This leaflet as well as a full text edition of tonights liturgy are available at www.sjcathedral.org/wilderness. The Reverend Canon Jadon
Hartsuff, Canon for Liturgy and Formation, would be happy to answer any questions about it. Contact him at jadon@sjcathedral.org.

ABSOLUTION

Let us reveal our true selves before God.

Have mercy, O God, have mercy,
according to your faithful love;
wipe away my wrongdoings
according to your great compassion.
Wash me clean of my guilt
and purify me from my sin.
For I know my wrongdoings;
my sin always faces me.
Create a clean heart in me, O God;
put a new, faithful spirit within me.
Deliver me from fear and indifference,
so that my tongue can sing of your righteousness.
Open my lips, O God,
that my mouth may proclaim your praise!

The Presider proclaims Absolution and the People respond: Thanks be to God.

Inspired by Psalm 51.

VIA SACRA
During this extended time of prayer you are invited to leave your pew and journey to the various
prayer stations that are set around the Cathedral. Visit one of the Stations of the Cross around the
perimeter of the Nave. Light a candle to remind yourself of the light of Christ, given at Baptism, that
dwells within you. Dip your finger into the Thistle Farms Exodus Oil and trace a cross on your forehead to remind yourself that at Baptism you were enlivened by the Holy Spirt for a life of ministry.
Return to your pews at your liesure or after the Presider offers the closing prayer, during the Peace.

PRAYER

AFTER

Presider:
All say:

COMMUNION

Let us pray.
O God,
you took upon yourself
the yoke of humanity
and the burden of love,
and did not find it easy:
let us learn from you
to share the weight of this aching world,
that our souls may be light,
and our hearts rested,
as together we are carried by you
in Jesus Christ.
Amen.
