Famous US Presidents

I. George Washington (1732-1799)

• introduced a central government and a system of cabinets


→ formed the base of the modern American form of government
• tried to keep himself out of conflicts within the parties
• stood for the conciliation between England and America and even succeeded in it
• quit with politics and disclaimed his reelection in 1797
• could handle his important job successfully and created a lot of leading cases which helped his
followers to decide

II. Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

• had to manage the abolition of slavery and the War of Secession coming along with it
• had to deal with the American Civil War between the Union forces (of the northern states) and the
Confederate forces (of the southern states)
• was murdered by a supporter of the southern states while watching a theater play
• commitment concerning the unity of the American states → symbol of peace and unity

III. John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)

• personality: attractive, friendly


• foreign policy: - involved in solving the Cuban Missile Crisis
- further support of Germany (speech: “Ich bin ein Berliner!“)
- eased the conflicts between the Eastern Bloc and the West during the Cold
War (→ policy of détente)
- important figure in the Vietnam War
• domestic policy: - abolished laws causing segregation
- raised the minimum wage and the unemployment pay

• assassination: - made him known and attracted attention for a long time
- the situation is still not clear → many different theories concerning the
number of assassins, shots and many problematic facts

IV. George W. Bush (*1946)

• personality: polarizing
• policy before 9/11: - acted without attracting much attention: mainly internal affairs
• policy after 9/11: - starting the “War on Terror“ → Iraq War => massive critique
- inside the country: many security-arrangements (positive public reaction)
- at the end of his second presidentship: big mistrust from many sides
