Assessment In a 5-minute quick-write, as if you were explaining this to another third


grade class, explain what history is and how we can figure out what happened in the past.

2. Assessment I will check each students handout to make sure they were able to
answer all of the questions for their assigned group, I will check to make sure every
student participated in the presentations. Exit slip: What were three groups of people that
lived in Michigan before the settlers arrived? Label one city on the map of Michigan
where Native Americans still live today.
Objectives Identify three of the original groups of people in Michigan before the
settlers came and describe the culture of one of these groups. Explain that some
groups of Native Americans still live in Michigan today and identify at least one city
where they live.
3. Assessment Exit slip: Pick one of the stories we read today. Pretend you are a Native
person and you are telling this story to your children. What is at least one reason that you
would tell this story to your children? What is one thing you hope your children would
learn from this story?
Objective Explain that Michigan Native Americans passed on stories, one reason
why stories were an important part of the Native American culture, and identify one
of the stories that was passed along.
4. Assessment Graphic organizer (one for Native Americans, one for French, one for
British): How did they get to Michigan/why did they come, how did they influence the
early history of Michigan, how can we still see their influence in Michigan today?
Objectives Explain how the French and British came to live in Michigan and their
influence on Michigan at the time. Identify influences that are still present from the
cultures of the French, British, and Native Americans in Michigan.
5. Assessment I will observe my students while they are making their timelines of the
process of Michigan becoming a state.
Objective Explain when and how Michigan became a state.

Culminating Assessment Task Students will be assigned a person from the early
history of Michigan, will write one paragraph about that person, place the person on a
timeline of the early history of Michigan, and present their person to the class. They will
then write a paragraph in response to the prompt: Why is chronology important in
history? Use events from our timeline to give three examples of events of the early
history of Michigan to provide evidence to support your answer.
Objective: Create a timeline of the early history of Michigan.
