Inthissource,thenotionthatjournalismisnotconsidered,intodayssociety,atrue
professioninandofitselfisexamined.Theauthorevengoesasfartosaythathedoesnotknow
howtotrulygoaboutgettingajobinjournalism.Theideaofhavingateachinghospitalfor
journalismstudentsorentrepreneurialjournalismtohelpreformthisviewisexamined.
Journalism,boththatofnewspaperandtelevision,hasdeclinedrecently.Thiscanbeseen
frompaycutsaswellasfromtheclosingofcertainpressaltogether(Anderson63).Thedownfall
hasbeencausedbyseveralfactors,includingthemoreprominentoneslikedigitaltechnologies
evolvingandthefallofnewspaperbusinessmodels(Anderson63).Becauseofthis,peoplehave
startedtowondermoreandmoreifjournalistsshouldbeclassifiedaseducatedandprofessional
workers.Tofurthertheirthoughts,manyjournalismjobsdonothavedefinededucation
standardsorevenasetstyleofwriting.Therearealsonoclearoccupationallineswhenitcomes
totheactualjournalistsandthesourcestheyusetogettheirinformation(Anderson64).To
refutethis,manyindividualssaythatjournalistshavetheabilitytorecognize,gather,analyze,
andconveyinformation(Anderson64).Thereisstillnocentralpracticeorknowledgethatall
journalismstudentsaretaughtthough.So,howcanonefixthenegativeviewsthatareassociated
withjournalismasaprofession?

Partofthejournalismeducationindustrybelievesthatschoolsshouldadoptteaching
hospitalstobettermarrycommunicationsresearchwithindustrypractice(Anderson65).To
many,thisissimplyseenasgivinganametocurrentpractices.Theideaessentiallyinvolvesthe
students,professors,andcommunityworkingtogether.Thestudentswouldbeguidedbytheir
teacherstoproducenewsforthelocalcommunitythatisleftuncovered,whichishappening
moreoftenwithnewspapersandotherjournalisticavenuesshrinking(Anderson65).Thereare
problemstothisthough:untrainedstudentsjumpstraightintoinformingthepublic,professors
oftenspecializeinothersubjects,andthestudentsareworkingfor,oralmostfor,free.Although
therearesomebenefitstotheteachinghospitalmethod,itacceptsthedownfallofjournalistic
institutionsintherealworldandhasthedrawbackslistedabove.Toprovideanalternative
solution,entrepreneurialjournalismcanbeexamined.
Entrepreneurialjournalismatitscorehasthemissiontoensureafutureforjournalism
throughentrepreneurswhocreatebusinessmodelsandinnovativeprojectsbythemselves,with
startups,oreveninpresentcompanies(Anderson66).Theproblemhereisthatthis
entrepreneurialapproachisnotthatspecific.Ithasbeenfoundtoprovideatleastthreedefinite
meaningsthough:journalismgraduateshavetocreatetheirownjobs,whichsometimesmeans
developingtheirowncompany,becausetraditionaloneshavefaded,journalismgraduateshave
topromoteonesownidentityandjournalisminthemarketplace,andjournalismstudentshave
tobeenergetic,adaptable,andopentoworkinunstableconditionswhilepoorlypaid.
Theideasoftheteachinghospitalandentrepreneurialjournalismbothhelpadjust
journalismtothedirectiontheindustryhasheadedhowever,neitheronehelpsthatfactthatthe

professionislosingitsvalueasastechnologiesdemocratizeaccesstomediaproduction
(Anderson66).
Iplantousemultiplequotationsfromthissource.Thestatement,Inessence,many
people,scholarsincluded,doubtwhetherjournalismisaprofessionatallwillbeusefulwhen
introducingthefactthatseveralindividualsdonotseejournalismasarealprofession(Anderson
63).Iwanttodisprovethisideaofthosepeoplethough.Inordertoshowthatjournalismisa
profession,Iwillhavetotalkaboutthevariouswaystoteachinjournalismschool,asmentioned
above,thatwillhelpitbemoresecureasarealjob.BeforeIcandothis,Iwillneedtosaywhy
journalismisaprofession,whichiswhereIwillusethefollowingquote:Ifjournalismis,asits
practitionersandtheoristsoftenaver,theattempttoprovidecitizenswiththeinformationthey
needtobefreeandselfgoverning,thentheknowledgeobjectoverwhichjournalismattemptsto
layclaimistheuniqueandprivilegedabilitytorecognize,gather,analyze,andconveythis
information(Anderson64).
Thissourceprovestohavemuchcredibility.ItcamefromthedatabaseofGalileoand
waswrittenbyC.W.Anderson,authorofseveralpiecesofthesametopicofjournalism.The
articlewaspublishedin2014,makingituptodateformyresearch.Itreferencesseveralscholars
withinthewriting.Additionally,thearticlecamefromajournalthatconsistentlyfocuseson
teaching.
Thissourcewillprovidemuchhelpwhenitcomestomyresearchproject.Iplantofocus
onsomethingtodowithjournalism,andthisarticleisaboutthat.Icanusethistoexplainhow
journalismhasdeclinedasaprofessionintheeyesofmanyaswellastotalkaboutthedifferent
methodsjournalismschoolscanadopttofixthat.
