The Microbial War

The year is 1660 and a strange disease is ravaging parts of Europe and
there appears no end in sight. The disease lurks at all hours of the day, but is
invisible to the human eye. No one has ever seen the disease, but can feel
its presence all around their villages and cannot stop its attack until its too
late. Fear and hopelessness are gripping the countryside as memories of the
Great Black Death are still fresh in the minds of the European people.
The Kings and Queens of England, France, Spain and Holland came
together in the great city of Paris to convene an unprecedented summit of
world leaders to combine resources and combat the unnamed disease that
was inflicting mass casualties to their kingdoms. The kings and their advisors
squabbled over what approach to use to fight the disease. The Kings of Spain
and France wanted to take the same harsh approach of old and kill any
villager that showed symptoms of the disease and burn the entire village to
the ground to keep it from spreading to the next town. Though it would hurt
their economy, they wanted to bar commerce with foreign nations for a
limited time to keep anymore disease-infected people from coming into their
kingdoms.
However, the kings of Holland and England wanted to try something
never done beforescience. They argued that in ordered to fight the disease
they needed to first figure out what it looked like. They needed to make the
invisible visible, so they could track it and kill it to avoid killing those who did
not have the disease, because, of course, dead citizens cant pay their taxes.
Yet, who could they turn to? Who could make the invisible visible? A decree
went throughout the kingdoms calling on all scientists to report to Paris
immediately with any tools they believed would be useful in identifying the
disease the newspapers were calling, the widow maker.
Many scientists from every corner of Europe answered the call bringing
with them all sorts of disease-identifying tools, but only two scientists had
a tool that actually made the invisible visible, Robert Hooke of England and
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek of Holland. Both scientist had created a tool that
had a lens so powerful it made the smallest life forms larger than life. They
called it the microscope. They were able to make life forms unseen by
human eyes before appear 200 times its size using a microscope. When

demonstrating what their microscope could magnify in what was thought to

be clean water Van Leeuwenhoek said, wretched beasties. They stop,
they stand still and then turn themselves round they are no bigger than
a fine grain of sand.
Impressed and convinced, the kings hired the scientists to find The
Widow Maker wherever it may lay so their soldiers could target it and kill it.
All the resources of all four Kingdoms were at Hooke and Van Leeuwenhoeks
disposal. They had a factory built where they could mass produce
microscopes and until they could retrofit every company of soldiers with one.
They taught the soldiers how to use the microscope and what to look for.
With its only method of defense now eradicated, The Widow Maker stood no
chance of survival. Soldiers, now armed with their greatest weapon, marched
from village to village finding and burning every trace of The Widow Maker.
Within a few short weeks the disease everyone had feared was little more
than an old wives tail and life in Europe carried on.

La guerra microbiana

El ao es de 1660 y una extraa enfermedad est causando estragos en

partes de Europa y no parece tener fin. La enfermedad se esconde en todos
horas del da, pero es invisible al ojo humano. Nadie ha visto nunca la
enfermedad, pero puede sentir su presencia alrededor de sus aldeas y no
puede parar su ataque hasta que sea demasiado tarde. Miedo y la
desesperanza agarre el campo como recuerdos de la gran peste negra
todava estn frescos en las mentes de los europeos.
Lo Reyes y reinas de Inglaterra, Francia, Espaa y Holanda llegaron junto en
la gran ciudad de Pars, a convocar una cumbre sin precedentes de lderes
mundiales para combinar recursos y combatir la enfermedad sin nombre que
estaba causando a muertes masivas a sus reinos. Los Reyes y sus asesores
se peleaban sobre qu mtodo utilizar para combatir la enfermedad. Los
reyes de Espaa y Francia queran adoptar el mismo enfoque spero del
viejo y matar a cualquier aldeano que mostraron sntomas de la enfermedad
y quemar todo el pueblo a la tierra para evitar la propagacin a la siguiente
ciudad. Aunque afectara su economa, que queran prohibir comercio con las
naciones extranjeras por un tiempo limitado para evitar que personas ya
infectadas por la enfermedad entraran a sus reinos.

Sin embargo, los reyes de Holanda e Inglaterra queran probar algo nunca
hecho antes ciencia. Sostuvo que en la orden de luchar contra la
enfermedad tenan que averiguar primero lo que pareca. Necesitaban para
visibilizar lo invisible, para buscarlo y matarlo a fin y de evitar a matar los
que no tienen la enfermedad, porque, por supuesto, los ciudadanos muertos
no pueden pagar sus impuestos. Sin embargo, en quien podran confiar?
Quin podra hacer visible lo invisible? Un decreto fue a travs de los reinos
a todos los cientficos que informe a Pars inmediatamente con cualquier
herramienta de la que crean que sera til en la identificacin de la
enfermedad que se llamaban los peridicos, el Widow Maker.
Muchos cientficos de todos los rincones de Europa respondieron a la llamada
trayendo consigo todo tipo de "herramientas de identificacin de la
enfermedad", pero slo dos cientficos tena una herramienta que realmente
lo invisible visible, Robert Hooke de Inglaterra y Antn Van Leeuwenhoek de
Holanda. Ambos cientfico haba creado una herramienta que tena una tan
poderosa que hizo que las ms pequeas formas de vida ms grande que la
vida. Se llama el microscopio de. Fueron capaces de hacer formas de vida
invisible por los ojos humanos antes de que aparezca 200 veces su tamao
utilizando un microscopio. Cuando demostrando lo que podra ampliar su
microscopio en lo que fue pensado para ser agua potable Van Leeuwenhoek
dijo, "... beasties miserable. Paran, estn parados todava... y giran alrededor
de s mismos... son no ms grandes que un grano fino de arena. "
Impresionados y convencidos, los Reyes contrataron a los cientficos a
encontrar el Widow Maker donde puede poner sus soldados podran atacarlo
y matarlo. Todos los recursos de todos los cuatro reinos estaban en

erradicado, el Widow Maker tena ninguna posibilidad de supervivencia.
Soldados, armados ahora con su mayor arma, marchaban de pueblo en
pueblo encontrar y quemar todo rastro del Widow Maker. Dentro de unas
pocas semanas la enfermedad que todo el mundo haba temido era poco
ms que una vieja historia de esposas y la vida en Europa sigui llevado a
cabo.
