After the War


When Soldiers came back home they were happy to survive but there were few
jobs so not all of them got jobs and they were owed a $2000 bonus from the
government.

After the war there was a recession as factories changed from wartime to
peacetime production of goods. (example bullets to toasters)
Unions:
How workers being united get more rights, better pay and working conditions (less
hours per week as an example)
A Defining moment for unions: WINNIPEG GENERAL STRIKE
All unions in Winnipeg go on strike to support one union
Business and Government thought this was a communist plot to take control of the
country
They broke up the strike by arresting the leaders, but unions showed they were not
Communists and wanted better conditions and pay for workers.
Roaring Twenties:
Electricity in homes brings in new products toasters, vacuums, stoves, fridges,
radio
Cars become affordable and people become more mobile. (travel farther and faster
than before)
Better working conditions create leisure time and people dance, go to silent
movies, watch sports, and other things.

Women: Womens rights: women are persons case, the famous five go to court to
find out if women are persons under the constitution. In 1929 the courts say they
are and have all the same rights and responsibilities as men.
Women become more independent, smoke and drink in public, do things men only
used to do and the symbol of this independent woman was the Flapper
Flappers: Clothing: skirts up to the knee, flat chested look, boyish haircuts, non
brimmed hats.
1930s
Causes of the depression: Overproduction, depend too much on resources
and the United States, High Tariffs, Buying items and stocks on Credit
Effects of the depression on various regions. (maritimes, central canada,
praires)
Relief camps -> On to Ottawa trek 1935
Regina Riots 1935
Escaping from your boring lives (radio/movies/sports)
R.B. Bennett attempts to get out of the depression by relief and tariffs but it
didnt work.
