Motion
- Motion is when
something changes
position

Video 1:
Baseball
The players
body and his
bat are in
motion. The
ball is also in
motion.

Positive
Acceleration
the change in
velocity divided by
the time it takes.
Positive means same
direction of motion.

The bat
because it
starts at rest
and increases
during the
swing.

As the snow tube and moves

down the hill it accelerates
positively.

As the cliff jumpers fall

towards the water they
accelerate positively (even
though they are going down)

Negative
Acceleration
the change in
velocity divided by
the time. Negative
means opposite
direction of motion

The ball
because it
stops going
one direction,
then goes the
opposite
direction.
The balls
velocity
changes from
left to right,
away from
the player.

At the bottom of the hill the

snow tube slows down. It does
this by friction and going UP a
small hill.

When the jumpers hit the

water they accelerate UP,
the opposite direction they
were moving.

The lines on
the field and
the grass.

The hill, the trees, people

standing, and houses are all
points of reference.

Velocity
the speed and
direction an object is
moving. Velocity
changes anytime
speed OR direction
change.
Point of reference
- Helps determine
whether something
is in motion. Ex. The
starting line of a
race.

Video 2: Snow Tube

Video 3: Cliff Jumpers

The snow tube and the people

The people jumping off the
on the snow tube are in motion. cliffs are in motion (the
water is also moving).

The snow tube moves fast down The jumpers moved down
the hill
towards the water.

The cliffs and the water are

the two most obvious points
of reference.

Video 4: Airplane

Video 5: Zero Gravity

Motion
- Motion is when
something changes
position

The airplane and the

pilot inside are in
motion.

The people inside the

plane are moving
compared with the
plane.

Positive
Acceleration
the change in
velocity divided by
the time it takes.
Positive means same
direction of motion.

The airplane
accelerates as it moves
down the runway and
when it begins to lift off
into the air.

Once there is no gravity

people begin to
accelerate. Someone
even gets thrown.

Negative
Acceleration
the change in
velocity divided by
the time. Negative
means opposite
direction of motion

As the airplane goes

straight up it loses
forward and vertical
speed. If it continues
going straight up it
would stop. This is
called stalling
The plane moved
across the runway

When people run into

the walls or other
people they decelerate.

The runway and then

the earth after takeoff.

The walls of the plane

because they do not
appear to move (even
though the entire plane
is moving)

Velocity
the speed and
direction an object is
moving. Velocity
changes anytime
speed OR direction
change.
Point of reference
- Helps determine
whether something
is in motion. Ex. The
starting line of a
race.

The people moved to

the back of the plane
