Station 1: Hand and Foot area

1. Do you think you know what the area of your hand is? Looking at
the 1cm graph paper can you guess how many squares would fit
inside your hand?

2. Draw your hand on the graph paper and work out the actual
number of square cm that fit inside your hand.

1. Without looking at the map of Australia try and imagine how
many times you think the state of Victoria would fit into each of
the other states. Record your answers in Mental Image 1
2. Now looking at the map of Australia try again to imagine how
many times you think the state of Victoria would fit into each of
the other states. Record your answers in Mental Image 2.
3. Now using the different options on the table (overlay with
whiteboard markers, cm cubes, cut out of Victoria, estimate the
number of times Victoria would fit into each of the other states.
4. As a group we will go through the answers to find out the actual
results.
