Warm Up

Hours after Japans surrender in World War II, Vietnamese

communist Ho Chi Minh declares the independence of
Vietnam from France. The proclamation paraphrased the
U.S. Declaration of Independence in declaring, All men are
born equal: the Creator has given us inviolable rights, life,
liberty, and happiness! and was cheered by an enormous
crowd gathered in Hanois Ba Dinh Square. It would be 30
years, however, before Hos dream of a united, communist
Vietnam became reality.

1.

Why do you think Ho Chi Minh paraphrased the U.S.

Declaration of Independence. Cite specific evidence.
How do you think French rule in Vietnam before WWII,
and Japanese occupation during the war, impacted the
people of Vietnam socially and politically? Explain!

2.

CHALLENGE! Analyze the last statement of the

paragraph above. Why do you think it took so long?
Justify your response with specific evidence.

Scenario
The year is 1945 and you are a Vietnamese nationalist leader.
You famously led a long series of battles against Japanese
occupation as your mens guerrilla (sneak attack) style of
warfare drove Emperor Hirohitos aggressors out of your
country. As you attempt to gain the diplomatic recognition of
the major Allied nations, you realize that France, the former
imperial nation that owned your nation in the late 19 th
century, is being given control of Vietnam and neighboring
countries of Laos and Cambodia. You and your people are
infuriated by this decision that was made without the consent
of these countries.

the sovereignty (self-determination and rule) of the

SEEC paragraph Exemplar causes of the

Vietnamese Independence Mov

The Vietnamese Independence Movement was created after

Vietnam was subject to over 100 years of foreign occupation
and rule. First the French occupied the region of Southeast
Asia. The French would lose then regain control of this region
after Japanese occupation of Vietnam ended after World War
II. Ho Chi Minh, a communist and Vietnamese nationalist, had
dreams of Vietnamese independence long before World War
II. During the War, Hos nationalist fighting force, the
Vietminh, fought against Japanese aggression and
occupation. After the defeat of Japan, Vietnam was poised for
independence. At least that is what Ho thought. The
Vietnamese dream of Independence, inspired by the
American Declaration of Independence and French
Declaration of the Rights of Man, would be put on hold. The
French would hold Vietnam as a colony for economic reasons
until 1954. Caused by foreign occupation, the Vietnamese
Independence Movement would continue long after the
French left Vietnam.
