1. EXPLORE THE BOOK COVER
- Cut out the puzzle piece page.
- Put the puzzle together and talk about the cover of the
book. What will it be about? Who are the characters?
2. READ
- Read the book provided in your childs family project package (audio
recording at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_qA-QjgxIk).
- Listen to the story, read the story aloud, and read the story silently
before continuing onto the activities.
- Please re-read the story as often as youd like throughout this project.
Re-reading is an excellent strategy that especially helps students gain
fluidity when reading aloud, and understanding of technical vocabulary
when reading alone.
3. GAIN VOCABULARY
- Learn the vocabulary for the animals using the
cards provided. Match the image with the
upper and lower case spelling of the word.
- Cursive is included just for fun and exposure!
4. STUDY THE CHARACTERS
- Cut out the character sheet and order them from
biggest to smallest.
- Try coming up with other sorting rules (ex. animals
with long or short tails).
5. RETELL
- Cut out the characters and the mitten. Glue
each character to a popsicle stick to make
puppets.
- Ask your child to re-tell the story to you using
the puppets. Make sure your child can identify
the characters, the setting, the order in which
the animals enter the mitten, and the problem that occurs at the end.

necessary supplies to retell the story aloud to the class.
- Students should include their invented ending in their storytelling
presentation.
- Please refer to the rubric below to help your child prepare.
