Check each objective is it specific? Is it achievable? Is it developmentally
appropriate?
Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will:
1. Explain safety and spacial awareness for all activities and check for understanding.
2. Give at least 2 pieces of positive specific, or corrective feedback to each group of
dancers.
3. Give clear and direct instructions throughout the lesson.

Special Considerations What are the safety concerns? What is unique about the
students in this class?
- Be aware of spacial awareness while students work on steps with
partners.
- Students must be willing to hold hands with their peers, they will not be
required to do so for a long duration of time.

Introduction: Teacher will introduce himself

to class, give background of who he is, and
why physical education is important to him.
Focus of the day: Learn some of the basic
steps of square dancing, and put together a
full length dance.
-Purpose: Dance is a festive, fun, and
physical activity that is important for your
whole life.
- Start and stop signal: Music will start and
stop the class. While going over the individual
steps, teacher will count in 5,6,7,8.
- Safety: Students need to have spacial
awareness so no one gets hit, and they need
to pay attention to their square partners while
performing moves like the Grand Right and
Left.
Review/Refining: Square dance music is
usually upbeat folk/country tunes. Dance is
an important lifelong activity because it is a
great way to socialize and solve a puzzle
with peers.
Transition: Teacher will ask students to pick
a yellow or green pinny and find a hotspot on

ORGANIZATION

the floor matching their color. Teacher will

instruct students to diversify the squares,
mixing men and women together. The point of
the colored pinnys is to eliminate the
necessity of boys and girls partnering
together.

Activity 1: Learning the moves. Each move

will be introduced/demonstrated/and
explained quickly due to the shortened
period.
Introduction: There are many different, but
simple moves incorporated in square
dancing. Head couples will be the two
students facing the basketball hoops, and the
other set of two students across from them
facing the opposite hoops. Side couples will
be facing the sides of the gym. Corners are
the person to your side that isnt your partner.
CFU: Who are the head couples in each
square? Who are the side couples in each
square?
Head couples will raise their hands.
Side couples will raise their hands.
Heads/Sides to the middle: Once the
teacher calls this move, the two head couples
will walk to the center of the square (4 beats)
and give the person opposite from them a
high ten. They will then walk backwards to
their hotspots (4 beats) and wait for their next
call. Sides do the same thing when the
teacher calls Sides to the middle.
Demonstration: Teacher will ask the head
and side couples of one square to
demonstrate this move. Then all students will
practice.
Right/Left elbow turn: Partners (Heads and
Sides) will face and lock their right elbows
together and rotate clockwise for 8 beats,
then they immediately switch elbows and lock
the left elbow and rotate counter clockwise for
8 beats. Partners should end up back on their
hotspots facing in towards the square.

CFU: How many beats does each turn last?

8 beats
Demonstration: Teacher will ask a different
square to demonstrate the Right/Left elbow
turn. Then all students will practice.
Do-Si-Do: Partners will face each other and
walk around each other while looking the
same direction the entire time, passing with
right shoulder to right shoulder. This lasts 8
beats. Then, students will Do-Si-Do their
corner, passing right shoulder to right
shoulder, facing the same direction the entire
time.
CFU: Do you ever change the direction you
are looking when you do-si-do?
no.
Demo: Teacher will ask a square to
demonstrate the Do-Si-Do. Then all students
will practice.
Race Around the Set: Depending on what
group is called (Heads or Sides), partners will
jog around the square (Yellows run clockwise,
Greens run Counter Clockwise), pass their
partner, and meet up with them back at their
starting hotspots. (No beats will be kept due
to differentiating speeds.)
Safety: Remind students to be careful when
passing their partner.
CFU: Which way to yellows/greens run?
Yellows: Clockwise.
Greens: Counter Clockwise.
Demo: Teacher will ask one head group to
demonstrate this move. Then all students will
practice. (Taking in consideration of letting
one group of heads or one group of sides to
practice at a time to avoid collisions.
Left/Right hand Star: All of the yellows, or all
of the greens, (depending on who is called, in
this dance yellows will be called first) will
meet in the middle of the square. All students
will extend left hands upwards and touch fists
and walk counterclockwise for 8 beats, they
then immediately turn around and extend

9:359:45

right hands up (touching fists) and walk 8

beats clockwise. After 8 beats, yellows will
move back to their hotspots. The Greens will
do the exact same thing (left hand star, right
hand star, 8 beats each, and return to their
hotspots..
CFU: What do you do after 8 beats of a left
handed star?
Turn around and perform a right hand star.
Demo: Teacher will ask one set of yellows in
one square to perform a left/right star. Then
all students will practice, yellows first, then
greens.
Grand Right and Left: All students face their
partner giving them their right hand. As they pull
their partner pass them and walk to the next
person, their left hand is extended to take that
of the next person. This continues until they are
back to their original starting place (for us this
means they will pass their partner half way
around then meet them where they started). By
wearing pinnies, they are reminded that they do
not take hands with anyone wearing the same
color as themselves.
CFU: Who are the only people that you take
hands with?
People of the opposite pinny color.
Demo: Teacher will ask one entire square to
attempt to perform the Grand right and left.
This may take a few attempts due to the
challenge of this move. Then all the students
will practice this step.
Activity 2: While the teacher calls out the
steps to the entire dance (which is in order
addressed above.) Students will perform the
steps. This will be done slowly without music
so the students have time to master each
step.
Demo: If needed, teacher will review certain
steps with groups that arent completing
them. Teacher will have students
demonstrate each step slowly until the entire
square understands.
Activity 3: Teacher will now put on music and

9:459:53

call out the steps so that each square is

keeping up with the music. The entire dance
goes through twice with the music.
Extension up: Students will be encouraged
to clap to the music and dance while they
arent performing steps.
Transition: Students will meet the teacher in
the middle of the gymnasium for the closure.
Closure: Teacher will review some of the
steps and rules of square dancing.

9:539:55

With what side of the body do you pass your

partner during a do-si-do?
Right side
How many beats are used for a right hand
star?
8, 16 total in the entire star sequence.
Transition: Students will go back inside and
change in the locker room.
