These past seven weeks literally flew by. With swimming coming to an end, and
second semester kicking off, time seemed to speed up. It feels like yesterday that I had
my first teaching experience with the high schoolers. Coming from elementary school, I
had no idea what to expect when I gave students instructions. I had no idea that they
would follow all of my instructions to a tee and behave outstandingly. That first teaching
episode shocked me, and I didnt teach much of it. I feel as though I have came a very
long way in these quick weeks, and Mr. Gerry thought so too.
At my first teaching experience, I didnt know what to expect. I broke the students
into teams and watched as the class worked like a machine. Each team knew when to
rotate, when another team fouled, when they themselves fouled, it was crazy. I stood in
between the two courts with one hand in my pocket, speechless. That day, I worked with
Mrs. Harlow instead. She told me I have to move around and be active in the class, I
have to think of myself as a sports announcer, watching the game and commenting of
everything that happens. She gave me great advice that carried on in my mind
throughout the rest of the module. My second lesson was with my peers. I taught them
ball control and passing using a floor hockey stick. My lesson went well and I was more
involved with the students. I was more confident and comfortable because I knew all of
the students. Teaching that lesson made me think ahead to when I have my own class. I
get to teach and watch students grow and develop. I will be the reason they succeed
and learn. I am so excited. My third lesson was the turning point to my success as a
teacher. During this lesson I was only with five students that were willing to participate in
the water. We had a great time playing water polo and Mr. Garry appreciated how I
taught the lesson. He said he liked how I was disciplining the students that were being

unsafe. Finally during the last lesson I had a great teaching moment with Mr. Losee. He
told me how I need to speak up ten times louder during class. He and a student stood
on one side of the gym, he made me yell at the top of my lungs to him. When I felt like I
couldnt get any louder, he told me that was how loud my voice should be at all times. I
was teaching a split block at the time and we did that little test during the break. During
the second lesson I tried to be a sports announcer and narrate the game as I watched.
More specifically narrate how the students were performing during the course of the
game. After that class, Mr. Gerry told me that I was were I was supposed to be, as far
as becoming a teacher was concerned. He said my body language and the way I
interacted with students is all there. He just needs to hear more feedback and the
volume of my voice. I would really like to teach at the high school level. I feel like
teachers can bond with their students more closely and develop a very friendly form of
competition and respect. That is what I want from my students when I am a teacher.
The first important aspect of teaching physical education to high schoolers is
developing a sense of skills and knowledge to be physically fit for a lifetime. In high
school, students are almost at the time of their lives where they start making their own
decisions about everything. It is important for physical educators to teach students to
take care of themselves and why it is important to take care of themselves. We have to
teach these students how to teach their children to be healthy and fit and why it is
important to be healthy and fit. The second is to get students to refine and build on
previous knowledge of skills that theyve acquired. When a freshman baseball player is
in a P.E. class during a baseball unit, they can learn a lot. They can translate what they
learn in class to the field and become a better athlete. Another important aspect is how

students interact with each other by developing bonds. Sitting around in class all day
can get tiring. It is important to move the body around to get blood circulating to the
brain again. It is also important to develop communication tactics among students so
they learn a new way to interact with each other. Finally, competition is very important
because it is something that humans strive to do. We all want to win, or want to get a
point, or an assist, or anything. Students build a great sense of pride within themselves
when they get the chance to succeed against their peers.
