Information Literacy Assignment
1. Use the Internet to find a Technology current event article
2. Write a paragraph summarizing the article. (5 points)
The article Apple CEO: Unlocking San Bernardino iPhone Would Be 'Bad for America,'
published in The New York Times, on February 24 of 2016 discussed mobile phone, privacy, and
public safety in relation to the FBI and Apple after the San Bernadino mass shooting that took
place in December of last year. The FBI needs to break into the shooters iPhone to proceed with
investigations, however, breaking into the phone has been widely debated, since Apple does not
agree with that decision, arguing that this would affect the privacy of a huge number of
costumers. According to Apples CEO, Tim Cook, breaking into that specific phone would set a
dangerous precedent for privacy rights in America. However, the Justice Department claims their
request will not open a backdoor access, but would only be used on the shooters specific phone.
Tim Cook and Apple responded to the request by saying that the case will be taken to court, if
necessary. This case is important in that it involves public safety, privacy rights, and the Fourth
amendment, and will continue to be discussed in the media even after its resolution.

3. Find two additional Internet articles on the same topic. (2 points)
The keywords used for the search were mobile phone privacy, and the engines used for
the search were Yahoo and Google. Google search had more accurate results comparing to Yahoo
search. The reason why that is said , is because Yahoo search showed several advertisements
related to cell phone companies, before it showed an article related to the topic, while Google
search did not have any advertisements as a result of my search. Instead, Googles results showed
the news related to the key words used for the search.
4. TRAAP your sources. (8 points)

The article found on the previous step of this assignment was recently written on
February

24th of 2016.
It does relate to the main topic searched for this assignment.

The author of the article The Apple-FBI Fight Isnt About Privacy vs. Security. Dont Be Misled
was Brian Barrett. Barrett is currently a contributor editor for the website Wired and graduated
from Princeton University, NY in 2003. Most of the articles hes written for the website Wired,
were classified as Security and Technology Gear topics, and very few of them were general
Business articles. Having that said, on my understanding, Barrett isn't a specialist on Mobile
Phone Privacy but has a background that allows him to write about topic with a general
perspective.

The information in the article is trustworthy and the evidences aren't numbers in this case, but
specialists speaking about the mobile phone, privacy, technologies and laws involving federal
concerns. The topic discusses an important issue that has caught the eyes of the entire nation
and has been on the most reliable newspapers everyday this past week.

The article was written to inform the population about the case where FBI and Apple are
supposed to work together on the investigation of the mass shooting of San Bernardino. This
article clarified a lot of my questions and it has a deeper look on the case.

database, such as Opposing Viewpoints or General OneFile.
6. Compare the Internet and Journal articles. (5 points)
For this piece of the assignment I compared the website article The Apple-FBI Fight Isnt
About Privacy vs. Security. Dont Be Misled with the journal article Four Billion Little Brothers?
Privacy, Mobile Phones, And Ubiquitous Data Collection. In terms of ease to access, the article
from the website presents an easier vocabulary and a different level of information, where the
journal article specifies in details the information, having a deeper look at the topic comparing

to the website article. When it comes to timeliness , the difference was very significant. The
website article was recently written, conversely the journal article was written in 2009. Both
articles have mobile phone and privacy as topics, however, the look on the theme is different
from one another. In terms of authority of who had written both articles, according to the website
LinkedIn ( website used for professional network), Katie Shilton possesses a higher level of
education compared to Brian Barrett. Its important to highlight that the information found on
LinkedIn is updated by its own users, which means that the results it may not be accurate.
