Report Karongwe November 2015

Report Title

Learning materials and tracking surveys.

Objective

Awareness and empowerment: Allowing interns to collect data about tracks and the relevant
animals on drives which we can then deliver to the children in the community.

Summary

This is a long term objective which is quite current here at GVI Karongwe. We will have the oppor-
tunity to visit the nearby community more often in due time and have therefore scheduled specific
drives in which we gather easy-to-learn educational materials which we will then teach to the chil-
dren of the community.

Report

During these drives we were able to engage the interns and volunteers into exchanging thoughts
and ideas on what information to collect during the research drive, based on the animals we come
across.

This gave the interns the opportunity to educate the staff with their new-found educational materi-
als, whereby which the staff would then guide them into how to simplify the learning materials to
suite the younger individuals in the community who will be receiving the education. The community
children are a soft spot for our volunteers and they deeply value the community visits. For this rea-
son they get comfortable very easily with new creative ideas on how to teach children about the an-
imals in their environment. We have had the opportunity to visit the community once or twice for
various crche events, during which our interns and volunteers used the opportunity to show the
children the different animals we come across in Karongwe.

We aim to incorporate these learning material focus drives into most of the intern specific drives, as
this will increase the quality and scope of the education provided by our interns. In turn it will im-
prove the quality of the interns experience of the program. We hope to create enough materials to
use on a weekly basis and to ultimately compile a study guide from which we teach the children.
