Physical Education
Standard 4
Health-Enhancing Physical Fitness: Students achieve and maintain a health-enhancing
level of physical fitness.
K.4.1 Demonstrate improved cardio respiratory endurance.
Example: Engage in vigorous activity, progressing from short periods to longer periods
of time (e.g., chasing and fleeing physical fitness activity/game, skill
developmentactivity, walk/run at ones individual pace at an outdoor fitness trail;
playground fitness
stations).
K.4.2 Demonstrate improved muscular strength and endurance.
Example: Improve upper body and abdominal strength by engaging in specific exercises
throughout the school year (e.g., shoulder touches, modified push-ups, v-sit, modified
crunch).
K.4.3 Demonstrate improved flexibility in three different joints.
Example: Demonstrate engagement in specific stretches to improve lower back flexion
(e.g., seated and standing straddle stretches, seal stretch).
K.4.4 Identify the basic effects of physical activity on heart and lung function.
Example: Observe and feel fast heart and breathing rates when engaged in skill
development and physical fitness activities (e.g., feel a slow heart rate and observe a
slow breathing rate before skill and fitness stations begin, after ten or more minutes feel
and observe fast heart and breathing rates).
GOAL of lesson (tie directly to the Academic Standard(s):
To achieve and maintain a health enhancing level of physical fitness.

Materials Needed (List all necessary materials, including books, websites, media in
detail.)
No materials needed

PROCEDURE (also known as anticipatory set):

1. K.4.2 and K.4.3:
a. Do 10 Jumping Jacks,
b. 10 second (each) arm stretches, 10 second (each) leg stretches
c. modified crunch
d. 5 V sit
e. 5 modified pushups.
2. K.4.1:
a. Play the game sharks and minnows.
Incorporate both walking and running in the game. A couple of rounds they will all
be running. A couple of rounds they will all walk. The final round they will run again.
3. K.4.4:
a. Gather everyone together and observe their beating hearts. Can they feel their
heartbeat?
4. K.4.3:
a. leg straddles sitting down. Stretch your arms also while doing this. (10 seconds
each side)
b. sit down and touch your toes stretch (10 seconds)
c. butterfly stretch ( 10 seconds)
d. arm stretch (10 seconds each side)
e.
5. K.4.4:
a. Gather everyone together and observe their heart beats now. Is their heartbeat as
strong as before?
b. discuss with them why this is.

OBJECTIVES (The students will be able to.)

1. The students will be able to correctly demonstrate stretches and exercises
they can do at home.
2. The students will be able to demonstrate the difference between running and
fast walking.
3. The students will be able to record how their heart pumps faster when they
finished exercising but slowed down after they relaxed more.

Assessment of student learning, including description of how you will assess:

By doing this lesson the students will be working on developing their flexibility by
stretching and muscle and endurance by the exercises. By playing the game they will be
doing a vigorous activity that is good for cardio respiratory. Also by incorporating
walking and running they learn the difference between fast walking and running. Finally
the students will observe and discuss how the human heart beats faster after a vigorous
activity and then slows down when its not as stressed.

I will assess the students by how well they participated and listened. Maybe they cant
do all the exercises correctly but the important thing is that they tried what the teacher
did. They also need to be paying attention to instruction. What did the teacher tell them to
do? Are they running when theyre supposed to be walking? Are they doing a different
exercise than what the teacher is doing?

Estimated time for lesson (in hours and/or minutes):

Excercises: 5 minutes
Game: 15 minutes
Talking: 2 minutes
Stretching: 5 minutes
Talking: 3 minutes

30 minutes
