ASSIGNMENT # 7
Obtain the values of the joint moments of a frame which forms a section of a box
culvert in Fig. 5 under the prescribed loading and soil pressure. [Ans. MA = 4.57
kN-m (tension outside)]
2.
Analyze the space frame subjected to the external forces as shown in Fig. 6. Take E =
210,000 MPa and = 0.33 for the material, and same constant, tubular section with
200 and 180 mm of outside and inside diameters respectively for the members of the
frame. [Ans. R4 = 17.75 kN (up)]
3.
Determine the internal forces, plot the moment diagram, and sketch the elastic curve of
the ring loaded as shown in Fig. 7. The ring has a constant cross-section. [Ans. Mmax
= 0.3183P R, 0.1817P R]
4.
Consider a fixed-ended beam with span length 8 m and EI = 20,000 kN-m2 . The
beam is loaded by a uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m intensity, and its right-end
support rotates by 0.0001 rad for every kN-m of moment. Analyze the beam for its
end-moments. [Ans. Mlef t end = 33.33 kN-m]
5.
Analyze the structure in Fig. 8 and compute the axial forces in members 3, 4 and
5. Also draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam portion of the structure.
Take I = 179.8106 mm4 , and cross-sectional areas as shown in the figure. Compare
the moment diagram with that in a simply supported beam of the same length and
loading. [Ans. F3 = 83.92 kN]
6.
Compute the reactions of the structure and plot its shear and moment diagrams resulting from the temperature distribution shown in Fig. 9. The temperature during
construction was T0 = 15o C. The members of the structure are made of the same material (E = 210,000 MPa, = 105 /o C), and have the same constant cross-section (I
= 83.6106 mm4 , A = 5.38103 mm2 , h = 300 mm). [Ans. R4 = 0.0141 kN (up)]
7.
Compute the fixed-end moments of the beam of constant width and variable depth as
shown in Fig. 10. [Ans. M1 = 1.875L2 ]
8.
Compute the force in the cable and plot the shear and moment diagram for the girder
of the cable-stayed bridge shown in Fig. 11. The girder is subjected to a uniform load
of 20 kN/m. Assume that the steel cable slides without friction at the top of the tower.
The girder is made of steel and has a constant cross-section (I = 576.80106 mm4 ) and
is continuous at the tower where it is supported on rollers. The cross-sectional area of
the cable is A = 900 mm2 . Disregard the effect of the axial deformation of the girder
and the tower.
