AN INSPECTOR CALLS, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

EXT: DAY, DINNER TABLE BIRLING HOUSEHOLD
Arthur Birling has answered the phone and has found out that
a young girl has died in the infirmary and an inspector is
on her way. Shelia, Eric are sat at the dinner table
discussing the fake inspector.
ERIC
I still dont believe that inspector is
real.
SHELIA
Still Eric, we had a part to play in that
poor girls death.
ARTHUR BIRLING
I suggest you both be quiet. This new
inspector.. Shes going to test us. Dont
say anything stupid.
ERIC
Sorry, father; I wont throw up all over
her shoes. Not like the last time.
ARTHUR
You dare Eric; if you do, youll get a
beating son!
Arthur turns to Eric and nods his head in disgust. Eric and
Shelia sit there in silence while Arthur Is pacing up and
down the table. They hear a knock at the door. The Maid
enters.
MAID
Shes here your grace.
SHELIA
Maid what have I told you? Dont call my
pretentious father your grace he doesnt
deserve that title. Get of your high horse
father!

MAID
Im sorry malady.
SHELIA
Its okay, I wont have you killed.
*(SHELIA said sarcastically)
(The Inspector enters.)
RUTH
Please excuse my interruption lords and
ladies. However someone has committed
suicide on their way to the infirmary.
ARHTUR
Not to worry ehm...
RUTH
Ruth Elizabeth Smith, you may refer to me
as Ruth.
Ruth takes off her coat and she sits firmly on her chair.
ARTHUR
Would you like anything to drink Ruth?
RUTH
No thank you, Im here to discuss a young
girl. Do you know this young girl?
ARHTUR
Whats the girls name miss?
RUTH
You know who Im referring to Arthur. (In
an angry and frustrated tone).
SHELIA
Just tell her father, its barbaric, I
cant just sit here sipping alcohol and
act like stuck up cows.

ERIC
I agree with Shelia!
ARTHUR
How dare you both speak to me like that?
We will be having words later.
RUTH
Enough small talk, you all had apart in
Eva Smiths death, or should I say Daisy
Renton.
ERIC
Daisy Renton Ive heard of that name
before.
ERIC
She was lonely, I made love to her.(Eric
takes a big gulp of his wine from his
cup).
RUTH
Yes you did Eric and she fell pregnant and
your so called Mother denied her request.
The events that followed were quite
tragic.
SHELIA
Weve been through this malarkey before!
Dont you recall Eric?
ERIC
Oh.. I was so out of my face (in a funny
tone). I suppose it just slipped my mind.
ARTHUR
Inspector. Youre wasting your time.

RUTH
I have plenty of time Arthur; you all had
a part in this Womens death. However it
all started with you Arthur, you sacked
her from your works.
ARTHUR
Like my daughter said, weve already been
through this! Enough questions!
RUTH
Oh you have? Was that the guilt? It will
always find those who are guilty. Mark my
words Arthur, I will find out and I will
take justice. No one kills my flesh and
blood and gets away with it.
ERIC
Wait, what? What do you mean? (Eric gulps
another large amount of wine)
RUTH
You heard me! Yes, shes my sister. I was
about to take justice into my own hands; I
would murder you all. But Im better than
that, Im done here. You may think youre
out of the water Birlings but its only
just started. Youre about to lose
everything.

Ruth walks out and slams the door behind her. Arthur, Shelia
and Eric have a shocked and concerned expression.
