Physical Education Lesson Plan Grade 2-3

Doing
1. Select and perform loco-motor
and non-loco-motor skills in simple
sequences, individually and with a
partner.
2. Solve movement tasks using given
criteria.

Prepared By: Maria Cochran

Date: January 25 2016
Grade Level: 2
Title of Lesson: Locomotor Criss Cross

Knowing

Learning Objectives: Students will work in groups to practice and demonstrate

a variety of locomotor actions

4. Explain how working with a

partner or group may affect
performance.

Required Materials, Tools, and Technology: Outer black lines of gym floor, or
pylons placed in a square formation

Valuing

Safety Considerations:

2. Work willingly with others of

varying abilities, interests and
cultural backgrounds

- Play area must be clear of hazards

- Students may not run backwards
- Walls cannot be used as end zones, a marker (e.g. line or pylon) must be
designated away from the wall and properly identified
- Students will be crossing paths in the centre of the playing area, and should
be instructed to do so safely, careful to avoid collisions with others
- Where blockers are permitted, they are not to intentionally make contact
with the other student with their bodies, arms or legs, but rather by moving in
front
Vocabulary:
- Skipping step-hops performed by alternating the feet, done on the balls
of the feet with arms swinging in opposition
- Side-stepping leading foot steps sideways, other foot quickly follows
- Galloping forward movement with one foot always leading and other foot
following
- Leaping springing from one foot and landing on the other foot
- Jumping pushing off with both feet and landing on both feet
- Hopping springing from one foot and landing on the same foot
Class Formation:
Students will begin the class on an end wall, where the teacher will explain the
activity, the locomotor actions, and students will rehearse actions.
From there students will be divided into four even groups and each sent to a
corner of the rectangle created by the outer lines of the gym floor, which is the
boundary of the activity

Lesson Outline:

Locomotor actions will be explained (walking, skipping, side-stepping,

galloping, leaping, jumping, and hopping). Students will demonstrate
and rehearse these
The activity will be explained:
o Students will be divided into four groups
o Each group will go to a corner of the play area
o Boundaries are the outer lines of the gym floor
o Groups will cross to the opposite corner of the play area using
the given locomotor action
o When every member of the group has reached the corner, all
members sit down
o The first group to sit down chooses the next locomotor action
C4U
Students should give suggestions for safety concerns during play
Ensure students understand safety concerns listed above
Divide students into groups and send to corners
Teacher will provide initial locomotor action
Possible extending activities: a) Perform one action to the centre then switch
to a second, b) Groups must go to opposite corner performing one action and
return to initial corner performing a second action prior to sitting down, c)
Each group decides collectively on their own action, so all groups criss cross
performing different actions
Lesson Closure/Wrap Up:
How did working in groups affect the way you played this game? What would
have been different if you had been playing alone instead of as a group?
Did your teammates different abilities have any effect on the way you played?
How would you adjust if someone on your team was not able to complete
some of these actions quickly or without help?
