STANDARD 3.

0: DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF VIDEO PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT

3.1: DEMONSTRATE CAMERA OPERATION AND TECHNIQUES
Introduction to Standard: I chose my media because it demonstrated different camera
opertations and techniques. I learned different camera operations that I did not know previously.
I will use this in my next filming I plan to do.
3.1.1 Select, operate, and exhibit correct use of video cameras for project specifications
Title of Artifact: Man on Ledge
Creator: Asger Leth
Date of Entry: March 7th
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched a movie called Man on a Ledge. I think this is a really cool concept and they
actually executed it very well. Usually concepts like this do not get followed through very well.
My favorite were the different camera shots and they would switch back to steadicam/tripod
shots. It would feel like you were standing on the ledge and then a second later they would cut
to the ground and the people there.

3.1.2 Demonstrate the functions & uses of camera mounting devices (e.g., tripods, steadicam,
monopods, etc.)
Title of Artifact: The News
Creator: News
Date of Entry: January 19th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today, in the morning, I watched bits and pieces of the news. Everytime the camera is on the
news anchor, its very stable and is obviously on a tripod. Sometimes it swings back to introduce
the theme song and then cuts to the anchor. They also use green screens to apply the weather
effects.

3.1.3 Demonstrate types of camera angles and movements

Title of Artifact: The Hunger games
Creator: Gary Ross
Date of Entry: January 20th, 2015

Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today, I watched The Hunger Games. This movie was the first of trilogy and its my least
favorite. I disliked the rocky motion of the camera that happened in almost every scene. But I
think the thing that I liked the most was most definitely Effie Trinkets outfits and makeup. Every
time she appeared on screen she looked stunning.
3.1.4 Demonstrate the rule of thirds
Title of Artifact: The Incredibles
Creator: Brad Bird
Date of Entry: January 10th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today, I watched The Incredibles. This is one of my favorite Disney Pixar movies because of the
small jokes and cute plot details. This movie reminds me that even with animation you still have
tons of freedom with shots. For example, there are multiple scenes that demonstrate the rule of
thirds. Theres a scene where Baby Jack-Jack and his babysitter are in the kitchen and it shows
rule of thirds then.
3.1.5 Demonstrate different shot compositions (e.g., medium shot, close up, long shot, etc.)
Title of Artifact: The Vampire Diaries
Creator: CW Network
Date of Entry: February 23
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched one of my favorite episodes of The Vampire Diaries. This episode included
Elena and Katherine, and the two of them were pretty much clashing throughout the entire
episode. I love the two characters so much, but I love Katherines backstory more. Towards the
end of the episode, because they are doppelgangers, they look exactly alike. Katherine ends up
passing out and the scene cuts to an overhead of the two laying on the floor. They are both in
the same position, Katherine portraying the bad guy, and Elena still awake. She gets the last
word and then passes out.

3.1.6 Demonstrate shot flow including sequencing and continuity

Title of Artifact:Divergent
Creator:Neil Burger

Date of Entry:March 9th

Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched Divergent, the movie. Like its sequel, I have a tough time with the movie. They
didnt really follow the book correctly and they took out one of my favorite characters, Uriah.
Something I did like, however, was the knife scene. It was cool how the camera was fast paced
and capturing the knife being thrown so near to her face.
3.1.7 Demonstrate effective use of white balance settings
Title of Artifact: The Film School - White Balance
Creator:The Film School
Date of Entry: April 19
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
White Balance is used so that the brighteness of the film isnt too high nor too low. There are
different types of white balance that sort of changes the tone and color of what the film looks
like. You can set it to cloudy if it is cloudy outside. This video showed examples of film that
used different types of white balance.
3.2: DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF AUDIO EQUIPMENT OPERATION
Introduction to Standard: I used media that demonstrated the use of audio equipment. I learned
how to use audio equipment. I will use audio equipment next time I film.
3.2.1 Identify the types, uses, and pick-up patterns of various microphones
Title of Artifact: Microphones
Creator: Youtube
Date of Entry: May 3
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Microphones help stabilize and you are able to hear sounds better. There are certain types of
microphones that reduce noise such as wind. They focus on just the person who is talking into
them.
3.2.2 Compare and contrast the types, uses, and pick-up patterns of various microphones
Title of Artifact: Microphones continued
Creator:Youtube
Date of Entry: May 3

Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
There is a major difference when it comes to microphones. First of all, not using a microphone
makes a huge difference. You are more likely to pick up more noise such as traffic and wind. If
you use a microphone, you will reduce the chance of having that static noise in the background.
That makes it easier to edit later on.
3.2.3 Demonstrate proper placement of microphones for effective audio
Title of Artifact: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Creator: JK Rowling
Date of Entry: May 4
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
The proper way to place microphones is so that they are hidden off camera yet you can still
hear clearly. The audio in Harry Potter came out perfectly and it had a perfect balance between
background murmurs and hearing the main character who was on screen talking.
3.2.4 Connect microphone(s) to various audio equipment using the proper cables and/or
adapters
Title of Artifact: Natural Disaster
Creator: Pentatonix
Date of Entry: March 5th
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched a Youtube video on Pentatonix. They are an acapella group but they are not
the typical kind. They are one of my absolute favorite groups and they even create their own
music. You wouldnt even realize they dont use any instruments in their music. The audio they
use to create one of my favorite songs, Natural Disaster, is perfect. You can hear every single
note in all five of the members.

3.2.5 Record a short audio sequence, properly monitoring the sound level
Title of Artifact: Broadcast
Creator: Me
Date of Entry: May 5

Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
When I edited the softball clip for the broadcast I made sure that the sound level was mostly
even throughout the entire clip. If it was not leveled, then the audio would sound like it was
going up and down a roller coaster. It would not sound like it matched the clip.
3.2.6 Identify and correct sources of interference and poor sound quality
Title of Artifact: Blair Witch Project
Creator: Daniel Myrick
Date of Entry: May 6
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
The Blair Witch Project had a cool plot but the audio was a bit terrible. At some points in the
movie you could barely make out what they were saying. This is due to it not having many
microphones or any boom mics. They were out in the wilderness shooting with smaller camera
and less expensive equipment.
3.2.7 Demonstrate the use of mixing multiple sources in live and post-production settings
Title of Artifact: Pitch Perfect
Creator: Elizabeth Banks
Date of Entry: May 7
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
This movie mixed so many sources together and they blended together perfectly. They had to
edit everybodys own voice together during the post production time and it came out amazing.
Every song sounds lovely when heard.
3.3: DEMONSTRATE PROPER LIGHTING TECHNIQUES
Introduction to Standard
3.3.1 Identify and explain the use of basic lighting equipment
Title of Artifact:The Cup Song
Creator: Anna Kendrick
Date of Entry: February 24th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.

Today I watched the music video for The Cup Song by Anna Kendrick. This isnt originally her
own song, but its a different version of a much older one. She is working in a pizza place, I
think, and she is cooking. People start making a bunch of noise and she starts singing to it. The
lighting really changed the mood because in the beginning, she was lonely and doing work. In
the middle, it changed, and she was happy and dancing. Towards the end, it goes back to being
lonely again.

3.3.2 Demonstrate one, two and three point lighting techniques

Title of Artifact: Bates Motel
Creator: A and E
Date of Entry: march 7th
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched Bates Motel. It was the season 3 premiere and I fell in love with it all over
again. My favorite part was that the atmosphere and mood didnt change from the last season. It
still had the eerie lighting and gel tones. It had dark and depressing colors to give it that Psycho
feeling.
3.3.4 Utilize various light sources (e.g., natural light, reflectors, portable lights, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Take Me To Church
Creator: Hozier
Date of Entry: February 4th
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched the music video Take Me To Church by Hozier. The video has such a strong
theme and it was very moving. The video has a tone and color of dark blues and greens
throughout the entire song. The palette of colors was perfect for the sad and moving topic of the
song.

3.3.5 Explain & demonstrate the use of lighting techniques in creating composition, visual
continuity, and mood
Title of Artifact: The Secret Life of Bees
Creator:Gina Prince-Bythewood
Date of Entry:March 11
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.

Today I watched The Secret Life of Bees. This movie is based off the book by Sue Monk Kidd. It
was about a little girl and her housemaid that run away from her scary father. This story was so
interesting and gave a really big meaning. I loved the colors and tone since they lived on a bee
farm. It was so light, airy, and lovely. I loved the yellowish hazy tones to the movie.

3.4: DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVE USE OF VISUAL EFFECTS AND COMPUTER GRAPHICS

Introduction to Standard: I chose media that demonstrated effective use of visual effects and
computer graphics. I learned more about how to demonstrate effective use of visual effects. I
will use this next time I use visual effects.
3.4.1 Use Chroma key techniques for compositing (e.g., green screen, virtual sets, weather
maps, etc.)
Title of Artifact: The News
Creator: Fox
Date of Entry: May 12
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
The green screen was used on the news to show the traffic behind the newswoman. They also
used the green screen to show the weather maps for the news anchor. He showed on the
weather for the day and that there may be slight rain either today or tomorrow.
3.4.2 Discuss text, fonts, colors, title safe area, lower thirds, and placement
Title of Artifact: Take Me To Church
Creator: Hozier
Date of Entry: Feburary 4th, 2014
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Today I watched the music video Take Me To Church by Hozier. The video has such a strong
theme and it was very moving. The video has a tone and color of dark blues and greens
throughout the entire song. The palette of colors was perfect for the sad and moving topic of the
song.

3.4.3 Enhance a project using appropriate graphics

Title of Artifact: Hackers
Creator:Iain Softley
Date of Entry: May 13

Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
This is a 90s move that I thought was slightly cheesy but it was a little above its time. It starred
Agelina Jolie as one of the hackers. The graphics were completely 90s themed and it just made
me laugh. The graphics used by the hackers went perfect with everything else in the movie.
3.4.4 Enhance a project using appropriate visual effects (e.g., picture-in-picture, motion
graphics, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Transformers: Age of Extenction
Creator:Michael Bay
Date of Entry: May 14
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Visual effects were added to this movie appropriately. The transformers were so spot on that
they truly looked like real cars. It was the coolest way Ive ever see visual and graphic effects
were used. Some of the explosions and glass shattering that was done by the transformers
looked really real. I almost believed all of it was done with actual transformers.
