Inthiscourse,youwillintensivelyreviewandrefinetheFrench
youhavepreviouslystudied.TheclassmeetsMondaythroughThursdayfor
2hoursand25
minuteseachday
.Inclass,youareexpectedtoparticipateinallactivitiesandtoshowyoucan
usethematerialstudiedforhomeworkthenightbefore.Youwilldevelopspeaking,listening,
reading,andwritingskills,andlearnhowtointerpretandbehaveinFrancophonecultures.
However,themajorityofyourclassroomtimewillbespentspeakingandlistening.
TheclassisconductedentirelyinFrench
. Bepatientwithyourselfusewhatwestudy
in class and what you learn from the books, and you'll make rapidprogressandquickly
gain selfconfidence. Use French as often aspossiblespeakFrenchwithclassmates or
friends listen to French music and sing along watch movies and TV in French.
Remember that learning a language is a process that takes time. Yourinstructoristhere
to help youlearnthe grammar,vocabularyandpronunciationkeepinmindthatyouare
expected
tomakeerrors.
ATTENDANCEANDPARTICIPATION
ABSENCE POLICY:
Studyofaforeignlanguagerequiresfrequentexposuretothelanguage
and regular interaction with others. To allow for illness or other unplannedoccurrences,your
lowest participation grade (including 0) will be dropped. However, each additional absence
will seriously impact your final

grade.
Note:
Ifyouknowyouwillmissmorethan4
classes due to outside obligations (e.g., athletic events, schoolrelated activities, religious
observances),
do not
take this course, because missing 4 or more classes during the session
could result in your not receiving credit for the course. In cases ofaprolongedabsencedueto

LESDEVOIRS(HOMEWORK)
You are expected to do between
45hoursofhomeworkeachdayafterclass,andturnitin
at the next class, as indicated on the syllabus. These will be a combination or written and
online exercises. These are important practices for the material you will be learning and
applying with your instructorandclassmatesinclass.
Nolate homeworkisaccepted
(except
in extraordinary circumstances approved by the Department) and it is crucial that all
assignmentsarecompleted
before
comingtoclass.
Pleasenote:
Insomecases,theMFL(online)exerciseswillhelpyoupracticewhathas
beentaughtinclassinothercases,youareaskedtoattempttheexercises,basedonthe
informationyoureadinthePDtextbook.Inbothcases,yourgradewillnotbeaffected

RDACTIONS(COMPOSITIONS)
Several written paragraphs and compositions will be assigned during the semester, often
related to the crivons section in the PBS (Paperback SAM). Make sure you study the
models given andthenusethevocabularyandstructuresofthatchapitre asmuchaspossible.
Please turn in a typed copy, doublespaced, with a12ptfontand1margins. Besuretoput
your name and an interesting title at the top of the page. Verifythatallaccentsareinplace
thereisinformationonBlackboardforhowtoinsertaccentsonaPCorMac.
Reminder
: You must complete ALL homework assignments yourself, with the helpofonly
the textbook and SAM. NO electronic translators are permitted.Useofanysuchresourceis
considered cheating (see plagiarism and academic integrity at the end of this course
description) and will have serious consequences. Tutors or acquaintances may supply an
occasional word or explain a grammatical structure, and you may use a dictionary, but the

There will be a
midterm exam and a cumulative final exam as well as two causeries (oral
interviews). The dates are on the course calendar. Be sure you check it
before
you make any
travelplans.
Keepinmindthatexamsareonlygivenonthescheduleddateandtime.
There will be
one short daily quiz (petites interros) on the grammar, vocabulary, or culture
that has recently been introduced, assigned for homework, or covered in class. All interros
willtakeplaceatthebeginningofclass.Thereare

makeupsgivenformissedinterros.
The
causeries will consist of a conversation with your instructor(s) and/or with a fellow
student about a topic the instructors choose. Topics will be announced in advance, and you
maybeaskedtosubmittheconversationinvideooraudioformat.
The
midtermexam
willbeonthefirsttwochapterscoveredinthecourse.Itwillbedonein
class.The
finalexam
willbecomprehensiveandwilltakeplaceonthe
lastdayofclass
.
