wrestling starts at the
AAU level and, wow, are
things in a groove for
the Glasgow Wrestling
Program.
The Highlanders tied
last years club record with
45 wrestlers participating
in the State AAU
Tournament in Great Falls
this past Saturday and
Sunday!
They also boasted
the 5th largest team
competing at State for
the 2nd year in a row.
Only North Montana
(Great Falls), Havre, Team
Champs (Billings), and
Darkhorse (Billings) had
larger teams than GWC.
Whats more, the
Highlanders set a new
club record with 18 state
placers! This includes two
State Champions and five
State Runners-up.
Teamwise,
the
Highlanders finished in
9th place overall out of
66 teams and were tops
among ALL Class B/C

only seven Class AA feeder

Block Management Areas

Not Open To Shed Hunting
While Spring fever has hit extra early this year,
recreationists are reminded that springtime searching
for shed antlers, hiking, and other such activities are not
allowed through the Block Management Program, but
instead require permission from the private landowner.

Block Management only covers public hunting and
typically is only in effect during fall hunting seasons.

Recreationists seeking access to private land for any
reason are always encouraged to ask first for permission.

Dont forget, Thursday

is Red Thumb Day!

by Leslie Simensen, R.N.

On Thursday, March 17th, Valley
County Health Department will have its
first Red Thumb Reminder Day.

Why?

Because sending or receiving a text takes a drivers
eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the
equivalent- at 55mph-of driving the length of an entire
football field, blind. The Red Thumb Reminder Day will
consist of the health department and students painting
thumb nails red or distributing red thumb bands
as an obvious reminder that each time they open a car
door or place their hands on a steering wheel, the color
would remind them not to text and drive.

Please join the Valley County Health Department
in kicking off our first Red Thumb Reminder Day. Be a
part of this event and increase the awareness of texting
and driving and its dangers and encourage the message
to W8 2 TXT.

It isnt just teenagers that we are trying to increase
awareness and change behaviors, it is parents and adults,
it is everyone. So remind the adults in your life to W8
2 TXT!
We will be in the Cafeteria of the Glasgow High
School on Thursday, March 17th after school, painting
thumbs nails red and distributing red thumb bands.
Please join us in this activity, have a snack and sign a
pledge NOT to TEXT and DRIVE. W8 2 TXT!!

Help us make our community a safer place to live.
Join with us to increase awareness of the dangers of
texting and driving and be leaders in changing these
behaviors. W8 2 TXT!!

Montana Tales & Trails

Will Winter Wither

by Bruce Auchly, FWP

Is winter done? Kaput, finished, terminated?

It would seem so, though you may not want to bet
the farm subsidies on it.
Those who want a winter with snow and cold
ski areas, snowmobile dealers and farmers sure
hope the best is yet to come. For lawnmower dealers
or gardeners dreaming of tomatoes an early spring is
nice.

For most of us, however, it really doesnt matter.
Our lives will go on with a modicum of discomfort.
For fish and wildlife, it really does matter. And
their lives may not go on.

Yes, mild winters help some species like mice and
deer to build populations; perhaps to levels the habitat
cant withstand. Along comes a hard winter and those
prey species start tipping over. Then its a buffet for
eagles, coyotes and weasels. Well, until those predators
find themselves out of food and their populations fall.
But for now, hey, lets eat.

Fish are the most obvious sufferers of a dry, warm
winter. Below average snow in the mountains can
translate into below average spring runoff and above
average water temperatures in summer.

Thats a long way of saying fish die without water.

We knew that. But did you know that with little
to no spring runoff and flooding some species may
spawn a lot less.

Consider the native paddlefish.

As spring runoff in the Missouri River at Virgelle,
downstream of Fort Benton, hits 14,000 cubic feet
per second (cfs), it triggers a large-scale spawning
response from paddlefish.
Although paddlefish will still move upstream
from Fort Peck Reservoir to spawn at flows less than
14,000 cfs, at increased flows, the fish are able to move
further to spawn, giving the appearance of a pulse of
fish moving upstream.

Several other species respond in a similar fashion
if and when river water levels rise in the spring: pallid
and shovelnose sturgeon and blue suckers.

For eons, thats the way large prairie rivers worked.
The onrush of melting mountain snowpack careened
down to the floodplain and created natures chaos.
Natures seasonal disorder may look messy
from our perspective, but it worked pretty well in
flat-bottomed river valleys for those organisms that

evolved there, like insects, amphibians, and northern

pike (though not so much in Montana).

Then came dams and everything changed; warm
meandering streams and rivers turned cold. But even
nonnative fish species that thrive in cold water are
affected by a dry, warm spring.
Rainbow trout, at least this year, have started
spawning a couple of weeks early.
Rainbows in the wild reproduce over several months,
from early March into June, peaking from mid- to
late April in rivers and streams with gravel bottoms.
This year, rainbow spawning beds, or redds, have
been spotted in the Missouri near Great Falls in midFebruary.
Rainbow trout spawn in response to increasing
daylight length and rising water temperature. Our
dry, warmer than average weather of late probably
translates into slightly warmer water and fewer winter
storms (read: less cloud cover).

In the big, global picture do rainbows spawning
a couple of weeks early this year mean much? Meh,
maybe not.

But it does give us a snapshot of the intricate web
nature weaves. A moment in time we may miss by not
paying attention.

Meeting in Glasgow to discuss aquatic invasive species

Preventing the transport and
infestation of aquatic invasive species
continues to be a priority for FWP.
The proposed rule changes clarify
that decontamination at AIS inspection
stations may include appropriate drying
time of a boat or vessel, which may mean
locking the vessel to the trailer or storing
it in a secure place to prevent launching.
Additionally, the proposal includes
a new rule that would require boat
operators to remove any drain plug,
bailer, valves or other devices that prevent
water drainage from bilges, ballasts or
livewells during transport.
The proposed new rule would also
require boat operators to remove all

aquatic vegetation from their vessel,

trailer and equipment before leaving the
boat ramp or parking area.

The proposed changes acknowledge
the threat AIS pose to Montanas
waterways and attempt to address highrisk vectors of contamination.
A public hearing on the proposed
amendments and adoption will be held
on Thursday, March 16 at 6 p.m. at the
Glasgow Region 6 headquarters.

Written comments may be submitted
to Fisheries Division, Department of
Fish, Wildlife & Parks, P.O. Box 200701,
Helena, Montana, 59620-0701; or e-mail
fwpfsh@mt.gov, and must be received no
later than March 25, 2016.
