OursophisticatedwatercompanyWell,Well,Wellprovideswatertothosewhocannotafford
orareunabletogetit.WemostlyprovidetothoseinAfricasincetheyreinawatercrisis.
59%ofthe
world'spopulationhadaccesstoadequatesanitationsystems,saysLoriLewisinRuralandUrban
IssuesinAfrica.Thatsthewholeworldweretalkingabout.Onlyasmallpercentofthatistheclean
waterthatAfricahasavailabletothem.Nearly1billionpeopledon'thaveaccesstoclean,safewater
(thatsabout1in8peopleontheplanet!)and2.6billionsufferfrominadequatesewerage.Thisisnt
becauseofwaterscarcitybutpoverty,inequality,andgovernmentfailure.
Evenwildlifeisbeingaffected
byunsanitarywater,inthiscase,rawsewagerunoff.20tonsofdeadfishwereremovedfromtheVaal
River,theyblamedthereasonfordumpingsewageintheriveronoldpipes.
Nearly2millionchildrendieeachyearforwantofcleanwaterandpropersanitatio1n.Duetoan
annualHumanDevelopmentreport,governmentsarebeingurgedtoguaranteethateachpersonhasat
least20litresofcleanwatereachday.Thisisregardlessofwealth,location,gender,andethnicity.Many
subSaharanAfricansgetlessthan20litresofwatereachdayandtwothirdshavenopropertoilets.
HilaryBenn,internationaldevelopmentsecretary,said:"Inmanydevelopingcountries,watercompanies
supplytherichwithsubsidisedwaterbutoftendon'treachpoorpeopleatall.Witharound5,000children
dyingeverydaybecausetheydrinkdirtywater,wemustdomore."Bennisright,weneedtodoa

more.
Thecauseforlackofwaterisclimatechange.ItaffectswatersupplyinAfrica,rainsthatusually
comeandsupplythecountry'swaterhascomeinfrequently.Forexample,inDurban,thedamsare20

percentlowerthantheywereinthestartof2010.Inadditiontothat,

problemofstolenwater.Accordingtoonereport,
35percent
ofthecitieswaterisstolenorgivenout
throughillegalconnections.
Africaisgenerallyconsideredtosufferfromwhatscalledeconomicwater
scarcity,whichmeansthatinvestmentsinwaterresourcesandrelevanthumancapacityarenot
substantialenoughtomeetwaterdemandsinanareawherethepopulationdoesnothavethefinancial
meanstomakeuseofanadequatewatersourceonitsown,saysIFPRI.
