Assessments
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS
In order to differentiate for the wide range of abilities for this class Students will be answering two sets of comprehension questions. The
higher functioning students will be answering multiple choice questions about the recipe they used and the cooking process. The lower
functioning students will answer the same questions with picture supports. The other set of comprehension questions for the higher
functioning students include a question or sentence starter, the lower functioning students would answer a fill in the blank sheet with a
word bank with picture supports. During the lesson I will be observing the students for their ability to properly follow directions and use
correct measurements, as well as when participating in the flipchart pre-assessment activity.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS

Instructional Methods
OPENING
Anticipatory Set
Today we will be making a yogurt parfait as a class. Before we begin I would like to ask some questions to see what you already know.
Who has ever had yogurt before?
Has anyone ever heard of a parfait?
What tools can be used in the kitchen?
Why do we need to be careful when using kitchen tools and cooking in the kitchen?
When we are done cooking what do we need to do?

Introduction
A parfait is a mixture between yogurt, granola, fruits and whipped cream.
There are multiple layers of each ingredient so we need to follow instructions very carefully and measure only exactly what we need.

DURING
Can I have someone read what ingredients we will be using to make our parfait?
Can someone read to me the tools we will be needing to make our parfait?
I have already washed the strawberries so step number one of the directions is already finished.
I need a volunteer to read step number 2. Now that we know what we need for this step go ahead and place the strawberries on your
cutting board.
Can I have a volunteer read step number 3? Go ahead and cut the green pieces or stems off the strawberry, once the strawberry has its
stem cut off, slice the strawberry into smaller pieces. Before you cut anything please watch me as I show you how I want the strawberries
cut. Make sure you are careful with the knife when you are cutting the strawberries.
For step number 4 I need another volunteer to read the directions. Now go ahead and peel your banana and place it on the cutting board.
Will a volunteer please read step number 5 please? Now that the banana is peeled we need to slice the banana into half and then cut that
half into slices. Watch me as I show you how to cut the banana and then you can slice the banana. Make sure to be careful with the knife
while you cut the banana.
Now that our ingredients are prepared it is time to put the together to make the parfait. I need a volunteer to read step number 6 for us
please. After reading step 6 take your tablespoon and scoop 1 tablespoon of granola in the bottom of your plastic cup.
Can I get another volunteer to read the next step in our recipe? Take your tablespoon and add a lay of bananas and then strawberries on
top of the granola.
Will a volunteer read the next step in our recipe? We need to then take our tablespoon and add a layer of yogurt in our cup.
For step number 9 I need a volunteer to read it for me. Take your tablespoon and then add another layer of granola.
May I please have someone else read the next step for us? Now we will take our tablespoon and add another layer of bananas and then
strawberries on top of the granola.
Lets have a volunteer read the next step in our recipe. On top of the granola we will take our tablespoon and add a final layer of yogurt on

top of the granola with a squirt of whipped cream on top of that layer.
Last but not least can I have one more volunteer read the last step of our recipe. Take your tablespoon to sprinkle granola on top of the
whipped cream.
Before we start eating our parfaits we need to clean up everything.
Students who need hand over hand assistance will be given it. Any students struggling to follow directions will be given minimal assistance
as needed.

CLOSING
Now that we have finished making and eating our parfaits I have some questions for everyone to answer. If you finish with the sheet you have, I do
have another one for you to complete. If you are not able to finish the worksheet it will become homework.

Review
I hope everyone had fun making their parfait and got to enjoy eating them. Before we get ready to go to lunch we are going to review what
we did today.
How many ingredients did we use to make the parfait?
What tools did we use to today to make our parfait?
Does anybody know the measurements we used?
what would have happened had we not followed instructions?
Why did we need to follow instructions?
