Lesson 1: How Waste impacts the environment


Introduction: Hook and motivation: Context set as robot alien visitor to Earth, named Cy, is saddened
about our disregard for waste and its impact on the environment. He would like us to learn from the mistakes
of his race and to start local by spreading the message of recycling in the school community. Ask students if
they notice anything interesting about Cys race Sresu and planet Nede they are users and eden spelt
backwards. Cy states the movie Wall-e is much like his planet play short clip from beginning of movie
displaying huge piles of rubbish as planet Earth is overrun by waste ask students when do they think
movie is set and how does it makes them feel?

Where are we going today?- Go through lesson objectives with students
Body
Students watch two videos provided on the impact of waste on the environment and also read a factual
resource sheet attached in Weebly.
Provide QR code to access Padlet. Students contribute 2 impact statements via class Padlet. Impact
statements are shared with class. Teacher values each contribution and class discussion is encouraged and
facilitated.
Teacher goes through important components of an infographic. Example infographic as designed by teacher
is shown and explained. Students are taken through the features of Easel.ly. Rubric is also explained.
Students design an infographic on Easel.ly to visually display waste consequences on the environment.
Key Questions
After Wall-E clip How does it make you feel seeing Earth over-run by waste?
Which two impact statements mean the most to you and why?
What type of infographic will you use to illustrate your statement and why?

Comments are made by the teacher and encouraged through class discussion on design aspects of the
infographics, mediums and take home impact messages.
