Collective Summary on Disabled Youth and Unemployment.

All the articles chosen collectively tackle the issues of unemployment amongst youth with
disabilities in their own right. The article titled Canada has a large pool of eager and available
worker: the disabled by Michael Prince focuses the how although Canada recognizes barriers in
place that make it difficult for people with disabilities to become employed, eliminating these
barriers hasnt been made a priority. The author states that Transition planning and employment
preparation for youth with disabilities are insufficient and ineffective in many parts of Canada
and this is one of the main factors as to why these youth find it difficult to become employed in
the represent and in the future. They are not getting the supports that they need to thrive and they
are not getting the opportunities to show their capabilities. In the article the author Turner
explains ways and steps the Canadian government can take in order to improve the lives and
experiences of people living with disabilities. Through breaking down barriers, especially in the
workforce. This is also done in the first article where Prince states that The challenge must be
put not only to employers. More strategically, the policy challenge faces the provinces, school
systems, post-secondary institutions, and the federal government. (Prince, 2014).This believe is
also in the other articles we have collected.
Each article makes a point to stress how it is important to not only educate the disabled persons
but also stakeholders on the rights of the individuals and the damages that exclusion and
discrimination can have. Also on the ways to move forward in erasing barriers and creating an
inclusive work environment. For example in the journal Training Approaches and the
Provisions of Employment Services for Person and Youth with Disabilities is a Research the
authors state that For many years, the focus on employment of people with disabilities has been
on the supply side..EARNs membership is a reflection of its concern with attending to both

the supply and demand side of the employment of people with disabilities (Runnels, Dillon &
Porter, 1994).

The journal Training Approaches and the provisions of employment services for person and
youth with disabilities is a research out lines an initiative which purpose is to improve the
knowledge and employment opportunities and outcomes for people living with disabilities
whether it be physical, mental or developmental. Like the first article by Michela Prince this
journal explores similar solutions but gives more concrete, real life examples and models of how
to successfully implement programs here in Canada and the states.
Both articles explore and challenge the social exclusion, marginalizing and discrimination of
people living with a disability by offering ways the government and communities can overcome
these barriers and move forward. The third article collected titled Physical Disability,
Unemployment, and Mental Health heavily focuses on the affects that discrimination and social
exclusion has on the mental health of individuals with disabilities. In this article the author states
that discriminating a youth with disability by not giving them the chance to get a job employed
to earn a living, will result to several damaged to their health and personality. (Turner & Turner,
2004) in this article it also explores the ways that government and other stakeholders can work
towards alleviating these stressors that cause mental health issues in this population. Also to
work towards developing more inclusive work environments to avoid future mental health issues
it causes. Whether it be regarded health or whether it be economical these articles and journals
add to our knowledge of which steps we as individuals, as stakeholders, employers and the

government as a whole need to take in order to improve the quality of life of this specific
population in Canada.
As a CYCs we are passionate about this topic for advocacy and social change. Through b
recognizing and shedding light on the discrimination of people then moving towards change is
something CYCs should work to do. A CYCs we believe that people should be treated equally
in respective of their unique differences. This means that we should also abide to the OACYC
code of ethics which states that we will respect, safeguard, and advocate for the rights of each
client and/ or family.
The role we would have in understanding and advocacy surrounding our issue of concern is to
become an ally and get the main stakeholders involved like employers. We will do this because
no matter how much training and education the youth with disabilities gain, this will not get
them a job unless employers recognize and appreciate the great contributions this populations
can make. This can be done by first educating the employers around the topics of discrimination
and marginalization of this population and benefits that come with hiring them. .will be to raise a
campaign regarding the issues of discriminating disable young adults, and depriving them the
right to get a job.
Advocacy Statement: We acknowledge the multiple challenges that youth with disabilities face
with finding employment. Well will raise awareness for the employers and stakeholders to see
and be aware of the different issues affecting youths with developmental delays, thus working
together to create a diverse and safe workplace environment. We will link and work to liaise with
the disabled youth and as many employers, employment centers and resources available and also
advocate for their eligibility for employment. We will explore and tackle the different barriers

that these disability youth could face in their work such as; stigma, low self-esteem, bullying,
denial of their rights, discrimination and marginalization.
We would work to promote inclusive work environments through spreading awareness to
stakeholders like employers about the needs of this population. Through programs we would
work towards getting rid of stereotypes and stigmatization that stakeholders may have about the
disabled population that holds them back from hiring them. Throughout doing so it will
hopefully create a more welcoming and understanding working climate. We would bring
awareness to this issue on a government level for them to invest in accessible educational and
training facilities.by doing this the youth would become more readily prepared for work and be
aware of their own rights as worker.
