Through out this evaluation I shall be looking at the narrative structure, image

construction, the production process, and looking at what would change and
improve through out the whole process of creating my graphic narrative.

Narrative Structure
The plot of the comic overall is about a couple in a new
and what seems like a happy relationship, soon turning
into something poisoned and sur. Timothy is tied up in a
hostage situation by Esmerelda who he though could
have been the love of his life. She learnt that he is rather
wealthy man and she felt that she could take advantage
of that within her position. Esmerelda staged a hostage
seen, she had fired two shots, with the second hitting
timothy in the thigh. The police are alerted, but
Esmerelda feels as if shes got away with it, as she tries
to flee, the police manage to catch her and timothy
receives the medical help needed.
The spark with the narrative is at the very beginning of
the graphic narrative, when you see Timothys hands
tied behind his back. This begins the story and illustrates
to the audience what is happening within the comic. The
climax within the story I feel is there first gunshot, due
to the allowing the audience to see the severity of the situation, and completely
displays the situation that the characters are in whilst clearly displaying the
relationship of the characters, for example the lead in the hostage, and the
hostage. Denovemont, wasnt completely achieved within my graphic narrative
due to the fact that I left the end as To Be Continued this is to draw suspense
from the audience, and allow it to overall be gripping. Another reason for this is
that actually its a three part story.
I think that the whole plot and features is affective as I feel it challenges the
conventions that pop art was created upon, for example pop art can be very
sexist towards both genders, it displays when they see women cry over men and
men working, it depicts the stereotypical roles that the male and female should
task on within life. Within my graphic narrative I truly tried to challenge these
stereotypes that is still around among this society, but was overly prominent
during the period of time that pop art began.

do believe that actually my graphic

narrative could have been improved
in many different ways, for example
feel that actually the storyline
needed to become more complex
and detailed to spur excitement in
an audience, I think that the
audience could have grasped the
characters better, and we could
have interpreted many different
feelings into the story such as
Romance and evil. I believe another
thing would have been dialog,
whilst what I had within the graphic
narrative was good, I think that I
should have expand to create more
of a situation, to for fill the idea of a
hostage situation, and developed a
more complex and exciting story.

Roy Lichtenstein was a famous

American Pop Artist; I have taken
inspiration for him as well as other
artist such Andy Warhol as to how
to structure my characters but also to see what was typical of a pop art artist
and how I could put my own twist on the graphic but still giving it a pop art feel.
Overall our work has more differences that similarities, his work doesnt tell a
story like a comic, it doesnt have the same dialog or background.

Image Construction
The graphic style of the narrative is that of pop art which was a very popular art
form during the mid 1950s within Britain. So to incorporate this style into my
narrative I tried to use the bright colours and bold characters but still trying to
make my own twist on the tradition al pop art style.
Whilst drawing this I did try to stay within some of the conventions of pop art, for
example using the bold colours in the background as well as the use of the dots,
and the hair colour of Esmeralda. With the characters, I tired to achieve the
realistic feel of the characters, trying not to make them too comic like but I really
wanted to make the female character bold, which is something rather different
for the genre of pop art; girls within the pop art, tend to be blonde or black
haired and very stereotypical women with the curves, and crying over a man. For
instance within Roy Lichtenstein works tend to have blonde hair and green/blue
eyes this displays what is seen as the typical women, but with my work. I used a
fiery red hair for Esmeralda and has well as a slinky black dress.

To a degree, I feel that whilst

challenging convention within the
images, I feel this gripped the
audience and captured them, to see
something very different in a form
that has been constantly been very
precise with their views. I drew the
comic, and then scanned the images
into the computer to create the trailer
for the comic. This process was long
but I think that drawing truly created
the genre, as I do not feel that photos
would have obtained the pop art feel.
Captions where displayed within many of the pictures, they were seen in just
plain white box, they actually stand out against the backgrounds of the images
as the they are used to illustrate what is happening and what the characters are
thinking due to there not being lots of speak, I felt the audience needed to be
guided a little more through the story.

Production Process
I would improve the graphic narrative in mainly different ways. Within the
drawings I think that to improve it I would have added more detail, like instead of
colouring their faces in block colour, I would have done a series of smaller dots,
also I think that I would have done more detail in the background to set more of
a scene for the audience than just posing it as a basic room, maybe positioned it
in Esmeraldas house or Timothys office for example. I think that I would have
given
more speech and dialogue between the characters through out the
comic to help the audience to grasp a relationship between the characters, whilst
improving the effectiveness of the production.
It is a struggle to make a comparison due to pop art not necessarily having a
comic form; it is mainly referred to as an art form, so its difficult to make a
comparison but against artwork, it can be seen as similar and creative. The dots
within the pictures create the effect of pop art, as well as the face pair in
contrast, they have a basic structure but expressions are showed in a simple way
through the use of lines or certain over effects to the
I think the way I had planned my time allowed me to make the best out of my
comic. I had planned the images I would use to tell the story, I then planned the
lay out of the comic and what boxes would be where. For this I needed I looked at
how pop art tended to be position, they would generally be in larger square
boxes, so whilst still doing this I tried to keep the traditions but again trying to
create more of a diverse viewing. As I have expressed before there was a limited
amount of comic like reference to take, so it was difficult during the production
process to create something that was fitting to the genre. So after deigning the
boxes it made it easier to illustrate the comic, as I knew what was going into
what boxes, and I felt as if this prepared me a lot more. It allowed me to imagine
what would look good in what boxes and to create the best drawings possible.

Further Content
The graphic narrative does deal with social issues, as I have expressed the whole
way through out of the evaluation, it deals with sexism. During the period in
which pop art begun sexism was a very big issue, women were expected to stay
at home and look after the household but men were expected to go off to work.
This era I think was clearly showing, that women were also seen as sexual
objects and dedicated to men, and it was truly displayed through this art form. I
was trying to show was that within this period of time now actually our values
are very different women arent weak, they can be leaders, they dont need men,
the men can be the ones crying over women, and that actually the stereotypical
roles can be reversed now, genders arent restricted or conditioned they should
be a particular way.
During the research period of creating the graphic narrative it was a struggle to
find comics, or anything on pop art apart from artists creating pieces of art
focused on the pop art movement. So it was an
overall struggle as to what I should base on, so it
the end I tried to take inspiration from art work, by
people such as Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein.

In conclusion, I think that actually my graphic

narrative both had negatives and positives such as
the genre having limited pieces to base my comic
around and a positive that I and others feel that
actually I did well do in corporate a different twist on
the conventions of pop art, but the overall intention
of creating my own comic on the genre of pop art I
feel was achieved.
