Air Pollution

And how to solve it

OUR PROBLEM:

What is in common
with all these
graphs?
They all show that
pollution is
increasing!

Going in-depth:
The air is too polluted, and it is costing us too much money and
causing too many deaths. We need to decrease the amount of
these pollutants and make our planet a safer place to live.

Most Common Pollutants Include:

Major Pollutants: Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide,
chlorofluorocarbons, and nitrogen oxides
Other pollutants include ozone and particulate matter, which
encompasses dust and smoke.

Where pollutants come from:

Natural and human-made (anthropogenic) sources like combustion,

construction, mining, agriculture and warfare

Motor vehicle emissions are one of the leading causes of air pollution.

Also through natural occurrences, such as wildfires, volcanic eruptions,

and spread by wind.

Effects of Pollution

Millions of people die per year.

Excess levels decrease lifespan.
Accelerated aging of lungs.
Loss of mental capacity.
Development of bronchitis, asthma, nerve damage.
Pollutants are contributing to global warming.

How can we solve this problem?

Solving air pollution will be a daunting task and it will take
many years. We have thought up a solution that we believe
will be able to stop air pollution and save our environments. It
is a very long term goal, and it will probably take over 10
years just for the first implementation of our idea.

This timelapse shows the cars at an intersection over 5 minutes.

Think about how many cars would be on the highways in the same amount of time!

Many people say we can stop pollution by making

cars greener and energy efficient cars is the
way to stop air pollution.

Collectively, cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of all U.S. emissions

They emit 24 lbs of CO2 per gallon.

5 lbs comes from the processing of fuels, 19 lbs comes from the tailpipe.

EPA-75% of CO comes from cars.

U.S. yields 50% of car emissions.

Why not just start getting rid of all the cars?

But How Does A maglev work?

The answer is actually quite simple. A maglev consists of multiple magnets
lined up on the track that create a passive repulsive magnetic field
underneath the train. In electromagnetic systems, there are electromagnets
that would effectively pull the train forward, and they are active for short
periods of time. MagLevs can accelerate at extremely high speeds with no
friction because of the design.

END GOAL: Replace all cars with a maglev rail system. Backup motor run by
solar. A recursive electric system will be implemented that will allow the electricity
used in the electromagnets to be reused, thereby decreasing the energy usage.
This goal is to be accomplished over a very wide time span.
Pros of MagLev:
Reaches speeds of 375 mph.
Strength of magnets allow high load capacity.
Cooling units are inexpensive.
Decreases our dependence on fossil fuels.
It has high annual revenue.
Can create millions of jobs for the economy.

How To Carry Out Our Plan

1. Gain support from National Public Transit Organization
and the people. We can also propose this idea to the EPA
and the UCS, who will take this to a higher level.
2. We will replace interstate highways and major roads in the
national highway system with our maglev systems,
reducing all emissions from these roadways. 47,432 miles
of interstate highway, with a total of 222,946 miles of road
in the National Highway system.
a. The 47,432 miles have over of the highway traffic

3. After replacing interstate highways (47,432 miles) we will

go on to the other 175,514 miles of roads in the national
highway system.
4. Next step: going outside of USA. First countries to get
MagLev: most industrialized/developed countries
i. China
ii. US
iii. Europe(mainland)
iv. Australia
v. S. America(Mexico to Argentina)
vi. These will spread to other parts of the world

5. Once this is all put into effect, most commuters don't

have to own cars anymore if they just use the highways to
commute and bike or walk to bus stations to take to the
MagLev stations. MagLev systems will also have
regenerative braking systems implemented, which will
reduce power plant emissions as well.
6. The world is saved from disaster and we can live again
with clean skies!

We can prototype
We have three different models here that demonstrate how our MagLev is going
work and look.

Working model: shows how our train will levitate

Design Model: 3D printed model that shows our general design

Digital Model: Digital model that shows construction and acceleration of our
MagLev

Why Our Plan Solves The Problem

Drastically decreases pollution due to cars.

There is no more need to manufacture cars.
Gets people to walk and bike to stations.
Decreases the total energy usage.
