Gresses build dream home after

fire, amidst planning wedding
by JENNIFER COYNE
Staff Writer

SAUK CENTRE Sitting at the kitchen table,

Adam and Andrea Gress peer through the front
doors of their home, out towards Sauk Lake.
The 3,300-square foot log house complete
with large, wooden beams that embrace the
ceiling and abstract windows that bring light
to even the darkest corners is the Gresses
dream home.
Its such a quiet and cozy place,
especially during the holidays, Adam
said.
Adam and Andrea Gress continue to settle into their dream home near
Sauk Lake in Sauk Centre. The Gresses built a log house in 2010 after a

Andrea agreed.
Actually, it would be nice if we could pick up the home
and move it across the road to the side of the lake, she said
with a comical demeanor.
However, the young couples dream home did not come
about without misfortune and heartbreak.
In January 2010, shortly after sending out notices for
their upcoming June wedding, the Gresses home was set
ablaze from a faulty space heater in the garage.
If we hadnt just sent out save-the-dates, we would
have postponed the wedding, Adam said. Between
insurance claims, pricing out every item lost and planning
the wedding, it was nuts.
Devastated, the Gresses evaluated their situation, and
with the help of family, began creating their perfect home in
the midst of chaos.
Knowing the couple wanted to remain on their property
site, Andreas uncle, Greg Massmann, offered to rebuild
their home; Massmann owns and operates Minnesota River
Valley Log Homes.
We like it here and the neighborhood is so welcoming.
If we could stay, we were going to, Andrea said. My uncle
stepped up with the rest of our families and offered to build
us whatever we wanted.
The young couple readily accepted the offer and began
making plans for their new home a log home.
Weve always loved Gregs home, Adam said. We
priced out what it would cost to build a stick house and we
just couldnt beat it. Surprisingly, we found that you dont

have to spend a ton of money to be able to have a nice

home.
As spring arrived, Adam and Andrea began constructing
their new home. After the plans had been drawn up, the first
task was to lay the first logs.
It was a fun time, Andrea said. The crew waited for
us to lay the first logs, and then we got to lay the final log at
the top.
The three-level home includes a master bedroom and
bath, kitchen, dining room and office on the main level; a
loft purposed as a living room upstairs; and a guest bedroom
and social room downstairs.
During the building process and as a part of their
package, the Gresses chose their appliances and decided on
the inside structure of the home at the companys warehouse
in Pennsylvania.
Its an all-expenses-paid trip, Andrea said. We walked
through 20 different kitchens and bathrooms. We even spent
the evenings in a cabin out in the middle of nowhere.
The weeklong travel helped the couple tweak their own
home plans.
When we got started, we didnt realize the opportunities
that were available, Adam said. We made several changes
to the layout and we are so happy because of that.
In June, the wedding took place and the Gresses home
was near completion. Construction ended in August and the
couple swiftly moved in.
Time was the most challenging part of the whole

process, said Adam, who was working a full-time job

and also helping with construction. By evening, I
would crash; but I would do it all over again.

Nearly six years since Adam and Andrea
moved into their dream home, they still spend
time decorating it to perfection. However,
they are pleased with not having to paint
the walls.

Two of the most treasured details
in the home include the loft, where
the couple spends most of their
time, and the large windows,
which make the home appear
more spacious than it really
is.
Not one window is a
standard size, Andrea
said. We do have
to break out the
ladders once a
year to clean
them.

Additionally, many details of the home were constructed by

Adam, who is a woodworker in his spare time.
He has built a lot of furniture and other pieces throughout
the house that really make it our own, Andrea said. My
favorite piece is the beautiful hutch and the shelving around
the basement fireplace.
With a slight chuckle, the Gresses said they are not the
only ones who enjoy their new home.
Many times, the couple will have visitors or cars stop to
look at the home from afar; even the deer and waterfowl find
the property pleasing.
Were always joking about the gawkers, Andrea said,
but its a compliment.
Looking around the home, there is nothing the Gresses
would change even the pristine wooden floors that their
dogs, Duke and Duchess, scuffle across.
Maybe we would have paced things out a bit if we
could, so that life-changing events werent within a two- to
three-month period, Adam said.
In agreement that the reason behind building this home
and the timing were unfortunate, the Gresses are in a state of
pure bliss as they learned many things about themselves and
continue to turn their dreams into reality.
Youre going to be over budget and it will take longer
than originally planned, and thats OK because at the end
you will be so happy with every decision made, Andrea
said.
Adam agreed.
Your dream house is out there somewhere, he said.
Go out and find it.

Community gardens have many benefits

by BRYAN ZOLLMAN
Staff Writer
ALBANY Shannon Olson and her husband, Tim,
rarely buy produce from the grocery store.
Instead they utilize two 400-square-foot plots in Albanys
community garden to help feed their growing family
of four children, keeping their tummies full
and their bodies healthy.
And the garden has produced
more than just vegetables.
We are both from farm
families and we wanted our kids
to see how much work goes
into getting what we eat, said
Shannon. When we go to the
garden, all of us go.

Olsons children range from 15 to

four years old. The kids take an active
role in planting, weeding and picking.
They plant pumpkins, squash, zucchini,
tomatoes, peppers, peas and beans.
We use a lot of what we grow for
homemade salsa, homemade soup and canned
vegetables, Olson said. We love grilled zucchini in the
summer time.
Community gardens are an affordable option for home
owners who may not have the lot size, or desired soil to
grow their own produce. There are community gardens in
Melrose, Albany and Avon.
Its been a great opportunity for us, said Olson. Its
a lot of fun watching what other people are growing as
well.
Community gardens have many benefits. Not only do
they allow people to grow their own food, they connect
people with the environment, build community and
neighborhood improvement and provide satisfying labor.
Community gardens vary widely throughout the world
and vary greatly in size. They range from small plots of
vegetables, to large greening projects to preserve natural
areas, to tiny street beautification planters on urban street
corners. People who utilize them not only get the health
benefits of eating vegetables, but also the exercise that
goes with cultivating the land.
In Albany, plot sizes are 20-by-20 feet. The community
garden began in 2012, with 12 plots available. The plots

I like to remind people about doing yard and garden work this
time of year. We are a few weeks ahead of where we were
last spring. Spring officially starts on March 20 and with the recent
warm weather we might think we should get to work in our yards and
gardens. Doing work too early to your yard and garden may actually
lead to more harm than good.
There are tasks you can get a jump start on but lawn care should
not begin until the ground has firmed up and the soil is no longer

cold and muddy. Raking too early may cause damage in two
ways; the first is by uprooting many healthy grass plants,
and the second is causing compaction to the soils simply
by walking on it. Keep in mind you may have different
conditions in different parts of your yard so some areas
may be ready sooner than others. Best advice would be to
monitor and simply wait until conditions are more suitable
to walk on and soil temperatures have increased. This same
rule applies for working in your gardens as well.
It is best to leave any protective mulch over bulbs
and perennials to maintain protection from possible cold
temperatures and maintain a more consistent soil temperature.
Spring is very hard to predict in Minnesota, but it is better
to shy on the side of caution and leave protection on these
plants. If protective mulch is removed soil temperatures
may increase rapidly encouraging growth that may then be
damaged by cold temperatures. However, leaving it on too

late can lead to rotting, so the best

advice is to monitor your plants
and watch long-term forecasts. If
you remove mulch protection and
a hard frost or cold temperatures
are predicted you could temporarily
reapply mulch or other protection.
Are you wondering if there is
still time to prune your trees and
shrubs? Do not prune your spring
blooming shrubs such as lilac or
forsythia; wait until after they are
done blooming. Fruit bearing trees,
such as apple can be pruned into early
April in most years but this year I

would encourage you to have a cut off of mid March due to

the early spring. If you can access your perennial gardens
without running over or walking on your lawn too much,
remove last years growth to within several inches of the
ground. Cutting any lower may cause damage to the crown
of the plant.
Recently several University of Minnesota Extension
Educators posted additional information about pruning for
maximum bloom and cutting back ornamental grasses which
can be found at For more information about pruning shrubs

cost $20 each. Last year seven of them were purchased.

You would be surprised how much you can grow in a 20
by 20 plot, said Olson.
The Olsons also have a small raised herb garden at home,
but do the bulk of their gardening at the community garden.
Olson said not only does it provide a healthy activity for the
family, it saves on her grocery bill.
Any time you purchase fresh produce you pay a little
more, she said. Going to the garden significantly helps the
grocery budget.
There are rules to follow if you do purchase a community
plot. Gardeners are typically responsible for maintenance and
upkeep of their garden throughout the growing season. That
means they must water, weed and provide whatever other
maintenance is required. They must also provide their own
tools, plants, seeds and equipment.
One benefit of the Albany garden is the city provides the
water. Gardeners are encouraged to care for their plots once a
week.
The Olsons make it a family adventure.
Its work, but its fun, she said. We look at it as
teaching our kids something. We pile into the car and they
love seeing how things change throughout the season. If they
havent been there for a week or two they are amazed by what
they see.
The community garden has served the Olsons well. For
many people who live in the city who dont have the land
to grow their own garden, the community garden provides
an opportunity for them to grow their own food. The Olsons
said they produce more than enough to feed them during the
summer and can the extras to use over the winter.
Its something we will definitely keep on doing, said
Olson.
Also purchasing a plot last summer was Albany Girl
Scout Troop 248. Troop Leader Tanya Rothstein said the five
girls in the troop took care of the garden the entire summer.
Plants they grew included radishes, kohlrabi, beans, peas,
onions, peppers and tomatoes.
They enjoyed planting, but they did not enjoy having to
weed, said Rothstein. They also watered every day because
there is not a sprinkling system, and that the girls enjoyed as
well.
I think it was a great learning experience for them,
learning how a garden is grown and where their food comes
from, said Rothstein.
For their efforts, the girls each earned a merit badge, and
with the bargain came some healthy, nutritious food.

Get in the

zone

by DIANE LEUKAM
Staff Writer

Hardiness zones can be a mystery, but if you want to be

successful at gardening its important to know your zone.
Here are a few basics to help solve that mystery.
A hardiness zone, by definition, is the standard by
which gardeners and growers can determine which plants
are most likely to thrive at a location. The zones are based
on the average annual minimum winter temperature,
divided into 10-degree F zones.
The USDA came out with a new Plant Hardiness Zone
Map (PHZM) in 2012, not based on the coldest temperature
ever recorded in each zone, as stated above, but on the
average lowest temperature over a period of 30 years, from
1976-2005.
We in Stearns and Todd counties are in Zone 4a, where
our average low temperature in the winter is -25F to -30F
degrees.
So if you are purchasing plants for your yard or garden
its best to check the label and buy plants classified as

hardy to Zone 4. Sometimes it seems that whatever nursery

you go to, the plants start to look the same, and theres a
reason for that. While all nurseries try to be unique in what
they stock, and carry a wide variety of items, they all want
satisfied customers and selling plants that will thrive in our
area is one good way to achieve that.
What many experienced gardeners know is that the
hardiness zones are not written in stone. Many other
conditions affect a plants ability to thrive: moisture, sun
tolerance, wind and soil to name a few. Even humidity
can affect many plants, such as roses and tomatoes.
Living in a larger town can also make a difference, where
a microclimate is created because the large numbers of
buildings and amount of pavement will keep the area
warmer than the surrounding countryside.
These experienced gardeners often try plants that
arent perfect for their hardiness zone, if they know they
had a spot in their yard where the plant will receive extra
warmth and protection. For instance, plants placed next to
a protected south-facing wall will have an advantage over
plants on the north side, which see very little sun.
You can always try new plants, and sometimes get
lucky with them. It might even be a good idea to err on the
cold side, buying plants that are hardy to Zone 3. That way
you know if a plant doesnt thrive, it wont be from the
cold.
As you gain experience, you will be more confident
of your results, but gardening has always been a matter

Linda Braegelmann talks closets and pantries

Many homeowners are

including pantries in their
floor plans, in addition to
their kitchens. This one
has a work space, along
with cabinets and shelving.

Many people struggle with

organizing the storage spaces in their
homes, but for Linda Braegelmann
of Melrose, it comes naturally. From
closets, to pantries or kitchens,
organizing is a part of her daily life,
something she enjoys in her personal
life as well as in her work.
Braegelmann has worn many
hats in her lifetime, starting out as an
office assistant at the Melrose Public
Schools. With young children of her
own at the time, paying $1.25 per hour
for daycare and earning $2.50 an hour,
it only made sense for her to start a
daycare of her own. After her children

were grown, it was time for her to follow a

path to her own creativity, and she returned
to school, this time as a student, earning a
degree in interior design.
She graduated at the age of 49, and
started her own business, Design 49. With
Design 49 she would often take floor plans
for new homes and design the cabinetry and
fireplaces, help choose flooring, lighting
and paint colors, and has even shopped for
accessories. Her favorite design jobs are
remodels, where she might help choose
which walls to remove and how to lay out
the new space.
That experience became valuable three
years ago as Braegelmann followed yet
another path, taking her current position
at Bayer Interior Woods in Sauk Centre.
Now she designs multiple closets a day
for new homes and remodel projects, and
every closet is customized and made for
the specific project.
Braegelmann said the trend in new
homes is to have large closet spaces that are
more like rooms, sometimes eliminating
the need for dressers in the bedroom.
Often there are separate closets for the men
and women.
Sometimes the mens closets are
larger than the womens, she said.
Closets today have gone beyond
the classic white melamine, with Bayer
Interior Woods having 18 standard colors
to choose from. Trending are closets that
have a look complimentary to the cabinetry
in the kitchen.
With todays closets tending to be
large, some of the master closets include
islands and natural lighting with windows
or skylights. They may also feature
accessories such as built-in ironing boards,
pull-out racks for belts, ties and scarves,
valet rods, pull-out pant racks, shoe storage,
laundry baskets or tip-out hampers. Some
closets may be designed to hide hanging
clothes behind doors.

All of this comes with a price tag of course.

People will spend anywhere from $500 to $6,000 on
their closets, depending on the scope of the project, said
Braegelmann.
Though they have been around a long time, the trend in
pantries is to be more than just shelving. They may include
wine racks/chillers or full size refrigerators for overflow,
baskets for vegetables, baking tray dividers, pull-out racks
for linens and drawers for concealed storage. Butler pantries
have a work space that may include a sink and extra outlets
for small appliance use. Braegelmann said unlike the closet
spaces, pantries are done predominantly in white.
A trend also common in new homes is a mudroom space,
with built-ins to handle all the needs of busy families going
in and out of the door on a daily basis. This may include
cubbies/locker/bench systems to accommodate each family
members storage needs.
Organizing spills over into Braegelmanns personal life
as well. As one of eight sisters, she said one year six of the
eight (not including herself) moved into different homes.
I helped organize all their kitchens, she said.
And she recently had fun organizing a friends kitchen
while visiting her in Arizona.
Working full time, as well as being a mom and grandma,
has caused Braegelmann to put Design 49 on the back burner
for now. But its still there, and someday down the road
shell spend more time on it again. For now, shes happy
to be where she is, creating functional, organized, beautiful
spaces.

the size.
Tile now comes in a variety of sizes, such as 12x12,

many different glass options.
It has durability and looks, said Borgerding. It no

kitchens and laundry rooms, tile flooring is the perfect

flooring for those areas.
Durability and cleaning ease has also come to carpet.
One of the new products, called Smart Strand, might well
fit the need for even the highest standards of keeping it clean,
durability and coziness. Made by Mohawk, Smart Strand
is carpet made of corn. The sugar from corn is processed
and the product becomes a key ingredient. The material is
spun into a fiber that is used in making the carpet. Not only
is it considered green, but it may help with allergies, and it
is durable.
They tested this in a rhino pen, really, said Borgerding.
For two weeks they had it in a rhino pen. We were able to
watch it on video. Thats kind
of fun. The rhinos did everything
on it and it
cleaned up spotless.
Vinyl remains a popular
choice for floor covering and it too
has changed over the last decade.
It now has a number of designs,
such as tile and wood.
Hennens also carries solid
wood and engineered wood.
The new thing right now is vinyl
planks. It comes in individual
planks, like wood. It snaps
together like laminated wood
or glue down and it will hold
up to water. There is also
traditional vinyl.

Is downsizing right
for you?

As men and women retire or approach retirement age, many

opt to downsize their homes. Such a decision can save older adults
substantial amounts of money while also liberating them from the
hassle of maintaining large homes they no longer need.
Downsizing to smaller homes or apartments is a significant
step, one that homeowners should give ample consideration before
making their final decisions. The following are a handful of tips to
help homeowners determine if downsizing to smaller homes is the
right move.
Get a grip on the real estate market. Downsizing is not solely
about money, but its important that homeowners consider the real
estate market before putting their homes up for sale. Speak with
a local realtor or your financial advisor about the current state
of your real estate market. Downsizing can help homeowners
save money on utilities, taxes and mortgage payments, but those
savings may be negated if you sell your house in a buyers market
instead of a sellers market. If you think the current market wont
get you the price you are hoping for, delay your downsize until the
market rebounds.
Take inventory of whats in your house. Empty nesters
often find that their homes are still filled with their childrens

possessions, even long after those children have entered adulthood

and left home. If the storage in your home is dominated by items
that belong to your children and not you, then downsizing might
be right for you. Tell your children you are thinking of downsizing
and invite them over to pick through any items still in your home.
Once they have done so and taken what they want, you can host a
yard sale, ultimately donating or discarding what you cannot sell.
Once all of the items are gone, you may realize that moving into a
smaller place is the financially prudent decision.
Examine your own items as well. Your childrens items
are likely not the only items taking up space in your home. Take
inventory of your own possessions as well, making note of items
you can live without and those you want to keep. If the list of
items you can live without is extensive, then you probably wont
have a problem moving into a smaller home. If you arent quite
ready to say goodbye to many
of your possessions,
then you might benefit from
staying put for a
little while longer.

Consider your retirement lifestyle. If you have already

retired or are on the verge of retirement and plan to spend lots of
time traveling, then downsizing to a smaller home may free up
money you can spend on trips. And if you really do see yourself
as a silver-haired jetsetter, then you likely wont miss your current
home because you wont be home frequently enough to enjoy it.
If travel is not high on your retirement to-do list but you have a
hobby, such as crafting, restoring classic cars or woodworking,
that you hope to turn into a second profession, then you might
benefit from staying put and converting your existing space into a
workshop.
Many retirees downsize their homes, but this decision requires
careful consideration of a variety of factors.

Planted
Bulbs for

Summer
Blooms
by ROBIN TROTT

I cant imagine a
garden without the
lovely fragrance of
Acidanthera
(Peacock
Orchid). A type of gladiola,
the acidanthera flower is a
white bloom with a maroon
blotchy center and, like the
gladiola, is a summer bulb.
Summer bulbs and
tubers are planted after the
last frost date, once the
ground has warmed a bit. In
our area, this means planting
will take place roughly from mid-May June. Gladiolas, dahlias,
calla lilies, canna lilies and tuberous begonias are all planted in the
spring for summer bloom.
Some of these are tubers
and corms, but for purposes
of planting and storing, they
tend to be grouped together
under the term summer
bulbs. These plants are not
winter hardy, so they need to
be lifted and stored in the fall
before the ground freezes.
If youd like to try summer
bulbs this year, be sure t
keep these basics in mind.

well drained soil. Amend the soil with organic matter, such
as compost, composted manure or peat moss if needed. Bulbs
are to be planted at a depth of about three times their height.
(Check the package for specific bulb depths.) Make sure
you place bulbs in the ground correctly. Bulbs and corms
are planted sprout side up, tubers are planted horizontally.
Summer bulbs like moist soil, so water immediately after
planting, and keep the soil moist while they sprout. As
always, keep your garden weed free. Weeds compete with

moist while they sprout. As always, keep your garden weed

free. Weeds compete with your plants for nutrients and
moisture. Once all your plants have broken the soil, mulch
your garden, sit back and enjoy the blooms, fragrances and
textures.
After the leaves of tender bulbs have been killed by frost,
harvest the bulbs for winter storage. Lift your bulbs with a
garden fork, shake off the extra soil, and air dry for several
days. Bulbs should be stored in a well-ventilated, cool and
dry location. I generally place my bulbs in a paper bag with
a little peat moss and place them on a basement shelf until

spring. Mesh vegetable bags also store bulbs well. Dont

store your bulbs in an air tight plastic container because this
will retain moisture and encourage mold and rot. Remember
to label your bulbs by type and color for easy identification
the following spring.
Mixed with annuals, summer bulbs are a striking addition
to your container plantings. Plant them close together to fill
the container quickly. Canna lilies are wonderful container
plants for blooms and foliage. Tuberous begonias, calla lilies
and caladium also make great container plantings.
Try summer bulbs this year for a touch of the tropics in
your yard.
Until next time, happy gardening!

Consider a Tankless Water Heater

You simply turn on a hot water faucet. A flow sensor

will activate a propane gas burner to heat this water.
The heating will continue until you close the hot
water faucet and the gas burner shuts off.
Tankless water heaters save the average home
ome
about $90 every year on hot water costs.
