Things you must know for FIFTH GRADE MATH STAAR

1. Place value to the Billions place and the thousandths place

Example: 2,393,786,002
In word (written form): two billion, three hundred ninety three million, seven hundred eighty six
thousand, two In expanded form: 2,000,000,000 + 300,000,000 + 90,000,000 + 3,000,000 +700,000 + 80,000 +6,000 + 2

Example: 0.893 In word form: eight hundred ninety three thousandths

2. Equivalent Fractions -- {for most common fractions. Example: 2/4 =1/2 = 4/8, 1/3 = 2/6 =6/18,
4/12 =1/3, etc. you should study your probability chart.)

3. Mixed numbers and their improper fraction equivalents. Example: 1 =

3/2
4. How to compare fractions using LCM/LCD to create equivalent fractions
with the same denominator {checking strategy: the cross multiplication trick
24

5.

3
5

7
8

35

Since 35 is larger than 24 7/8 is larger than 3/5}

Order least to greatest or greatest to least. Strategy: convert to equivalent fractions

with common denominators.

6.

How to use MODELS to relate fractions and decimals [again it is helpful to

memorize as much of the probability chart in your reference book. Strategy: Draw a picture-a
pie or pizza or cake

7. Addition and subtraction of whole numbers. Example: 126 25 =

8. Multiplication of whole numbers (3 digits x 2 digits) 125 * 25 =
9. Division up to 2 digits by three digits: example 279 divided by 24.
10.Factoring
Find common factors
Strategies Factor rainbow

or

factor T

Factor tree (prime)

=2x2x2x3 = 23x3

11.Identify PRIME and COMPOSITE numbers.

12.Adding and subtracting fractions WITH LIKE DENOMINATORS
Strategy add numerators and keep the denominator the same

7

3

8
7

Dont forget to simplify!

13.Be able to make reasonable estimates using ROUNDING to estimate

addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Remember round fist
then multiply etc.

14.Know how to read and use lists, tables, charts, diagrams and be able to describe
the relationship between sets of data in graphic organizers. Example: In and Out
tables.
15.Simple algebra with one variable. Example x = 3+5
16.Understand what Parallel and perpendicular mean
17.Understand Transformation including rotations, reflections, and translations

18.How to find locations on a quadrant 1

coordinate grid. (X,
Y)
19.Geometric definitions for two and three dimensional shapes
understand planes, angles, basic geometric figures (line, point, etc.,) angles,
faces, edges, vertices.
20.Simple conversions from one unit to another within the same system
(metric/customary.) Units of measure for mass/weight, length or distance, and
volume/capacity.
21.Perimeter of simple and complex shapes, area of rectangles and squares.
22. Volume of rectangular prisms.
23.Using appropriate units of measure for mass/weight, length or distance, and
volume/capacity.
24. Time and temperature in particular elapsed time and change in temperature
Strategy counting up: 1:10 to 2:10 to 2: 25 =1hour 15 minutes.
25.Mean, mode, median, range
example
22
Mean = average-add all
numbers together then divide
by how many numbers there
are. Here 1767 = 25.14

Range = maximum
(biggest) minimum
(smallest) number. Here 6

Mode = most common number

in list. Here 25.

23
25

Median = the exact middle number in

the range or (biggest number
smallest 2) + smallest. Here 28
22 = 6 2 = 3 so median = 22 + 3 or
25

25
26
27
28

List possible outcomes. Example: 3 shirts of diff. colors and 4 pants of diff. colors
27.Create predictions based on past out comes.
28. Understand the difference between experimental v. mathematical probability.
