SECTION 1 SEASONS AND WEATHER

SECTION OBJECTIVE
Explain how annual changes in the relationship between
the earth and the sun cause the season.

Identify the factors that influence weathers.

Describe the main types of extreme weathers.

SEASONS
Storms occur in the summer and in the fall.
4 seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall.

EARTHS TILT
The earths tilt is at 23.5 degrees.
The two lines of latitude hit the earth at sun down.
Solstice- the suns ray shines directly at noon.
Equinoxes change the seasons.
Equinox-the day and nights all over the world equal in
length.

WEATHER
Weather and climates are different.
Weather- is a condition of the atmosphere at a particular
location and time.
Climate- is a term for weather conditions at a particular
location over a period of time.

WHAT CAUSES THE WEATHER?

Air absorb and gives solar energy.
Water vapor- large mass of air.
Precipitation- water forming into rain, sleet, snow and
hail.
Cloud covers- clouds may holds water vapor.

WHAT CAUSE THE WEATHER? (CONTINUATION)

Landforms and bodies of water-water heats slowly, but
also loses heat.
Elevations- as elevation above sea level increases, the air
becomes thinner and loses its ability to hold moisture.
Air movement- winds move air and solar energy and
moistures that it holds.

PRECIPITATION
The movement in the air and water vapor in air.
Classified as convectional, orographic, and formal.
Rain Shadow- the lands on the leeward side.

WEATHER EXTREME
Hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzard, droughts and floods are
extreme weathers.

HURRICANES
Develop large tropical ocean water.
It stretches over 500 miles and causes howling winds
and heavy rains.
Hurricanes- storms that form over tropical ocean water.
Typhoons- tropical storms that occur in the western
pacific.

TORNADOES
Tornadoes form without warning.
Tornadoes- is a funnel-shaped column of spiraling air.
Tornadoes are developed by thunderstorms.

BLIZZARDS
Blizzard- heavy snowstorms with of more than 35 miles
per hour.
Blizzards are heavy snowstorms.
The Great Lake forms many blizzards.

DROUGHTS
Droughts- is a long period of time without rain or very
minimal rainfalls.
Dust forms and stops the crops form developing.

FLOODS
Floods- when water spreads over and not normally
covered with water.
Floods happen every year.
We will learn more about weather and seasons in
climates.
