DAVE CONWAY
(Second from Right)
I truly enjoy meeting our various students from all
walks of life. I love hearing about their backgrounds,
experiences, challenges, and hopes. I am fortunate
that I get to meet so many great people at a time
when they are looking to make positive change in
their lives. I will never forget the stories that they tell
and the things that they share with me. Some stories
are quite inspiring, and occasionally I even relay
them to my own children, in hopes that they will see
that anything is possible with determination and
effort.
One of the things that I find most rewarding is when
I run into a graduate that is working in the
field. Whether I am at a fine restaurant, getting my
car worked on, having my AC fixed, getting a medical
procedure or getting my hair cut, I always come
across one of our success stories. This shows me that
the education and training here at Lincoln pays off
with real results. Quite often, students come in with
no experience or training, and are now productive
and successful in their career of choice. This is what
its all about.

Jerry Hanrahan
(Third from Right)
I have been working as an Admissions Representative since 1980 and started with Lincoln/New England Tech in 1988. I have enjoyed my Career every
day because I enjoy helping students to fulfill their
dreams and become successful in a career they enjoy. The most satisfying part of my work is seeing
students walk across the stage at graduation knowing I have helped them to change their lives.

Clint Creque was born and raised in the British Virgin Islands. He moved to
Florida for the sole purpose of becoming a Pastry Chef, and his dreams are
coming to fruition in sunny West Palm Beach thanks to the many doors that
have opened for him on attending Lincoln Culinary Institute.

Why Lincoln?
I had my heart set on coming to America to learn the art of pastry making,
and intended to enroll with Johnson and Wales, but things fell through. My
mind was made up though, Florida was close to home, the climate was
perfect, and I had come before on many vacations and loved it. So when my
dreams started to fall through I did some research and talked to people I knew back home. It turned out I had a
friend who attended Lincoln and told me how amazing the program was. I immediately called Lincoln long distance,
and started my career rolling. I did visit once before I started to make sure I fit with Lincoln. From the start I felt like I
belonged here. Sure at first I was homesick, but I started to meet so many interesting people from all over that West
Palm Beach and Lincoln became my second home.
What degree did you get?
I was supposed to come for one year and get my Associates in International Baking & Pastry, but after I finished my
degree I got a once-in-a-lifetime grant from my country to continue studying. Without taking a break, I continued on
until I had my Bachelors in Culinary Management. The US allows foreign students one year of experience after school
which is what Im doing now.
Are you going back to the Virgin Islands?
That was my intent, but I landed my dream job. I am now working at Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa. I am working as
a cook but will soon be transferring to the Bake Shop. I wake up excited about going to work. I love the job and the
people. I am able to hone all the skills Lincoln taught me in a big country in a high volume kitchen. The experience Im
getting now will one day allow me to have my own pastry shop maybe here or maybe back home. What I do know is
that I absolutely love my job. Not only do I love going to work, but I feel like Im living the dream.
What suggestions do you have for current students?
The sky is the limit. Follow your dreams and think outside the box. I initially thought I was coming to the US for one
year of study. That one year turned into two years of education and a dream job offering. Let your dreams lead you
to your success.

time, Lincoln had a diploma program in Fitness and

Health Sciences. When an opening came up, I realized I
could finally merge my interest in Fitness with teaching.

Adjunct
Instructor
Mark Goron

Tell us about your education?

My first degree was a Bachelor of Arts in Radio,
Television, and Film. I have a love of film and thought
the degree would appeal to my personal interests.
After I finished, however, I realized that I wanted to
teach and educate people about health and wellness to
improve their lives. I returned to school and obtained a
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Physical
Education. I remained in school and proceeded to finish
a Master of Public Health degree. Since I enjoy working
with the elderly, I also became certified to work in
Geriatrics.
How did you come to work at Lincoln?
After school, my wife and I were residing in Maryland
where I taught Physical Education at a local elementary
school. We were both tired of winters and knew our
parents would eventually move to Florida. We decided
to make the leap to Florida and set down roots before
we had a child.
When I moved to South Florida, I initially worked for an
Assisted Living facility, then for Morse Geriatric Center,
and finally for a Rehab Outpatient Clinic. At that
Lincoln College of Technology

You teach a wide range of general education classes

now, correct?
Yes. The Fitness program used to be where the
Cosmetology program now resides. While the program
ended, my interest in working at Lincoln did not. I was
offered the opportunity to stay on as an Instructor and
move into teaching General Education classes. All told
Im working on my tenth year here at Lincoln. In that
time besides the Fitness courses, Ive taught Foundation
of Success, The Art of Film, Art Appreciation, Art History,
Nutrition, Introduction to Computers, Anatomy and
Physiology, Customer Service, Anthropology, and
Computer Applications for Business. This semester I am
actually teaching seven classes.
What is your goal in teaching?
It is one thing to amass knowledge and another thing to
apply it. I love it when students feel that click, and they
can apply what we go over in class to the real world and
their lives outside of being a student.
Is it hard teaching so many different classes?
No. It is actually rewarding on a personal level. By having
so many subjects that are constantly changing and
updating, I must stay abreast of what is going on in the
working world. This allows me to keep on learning new
information myself.
Do you have a hobby?
My child who is 7 1/2 years-old. After teaching classes, I
pick her up from school and take her to dance, theater,
piano or some other activity. I also coach her soccer
team so you can see my daughter keeps me busy and
jumping.

Why Lincoln?
I initially thought of going to Palm Beach State College,
but they were not inviting in demeanor and had no
intention of helping someone for whom English was
not a first language. Everyone was identical in their
eyes. I wasnt happy with my experience, so I looked
around the area for other options. That is when I
became aware of Lincoln College of Technology. I
visited Lincoln with only the intention of getting some
information, but when I walked in it was amazing. An
advisor talked to me, and I felt at home like I belonged.
Needless to say, I enrolled.

Eduardo
Ortega

What is your five-year plan?

Right now I am working at Oxygen Development
around my classes. My company manufactures
cosmetics for names such as Revlon, Maybelline,
Sephora, and Mary Kay among others. I was hired to
work on the line, but after a few months rose in the
company to middle management, and I am a team
leader overseeing 100 people on one of the shifts. I
really like the company and people I work for. My
current dream is to grow up with the company and
move into senior management. That is why I am
pursuing my degree. With the degree I will get at
Lincoln, I can make this happen. However, I need to
degree alongside my work history to get where I want
to be.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I came to this country from Ecuador seven months
before 9/11. I was fortunate. After 9/11 it was nearly
impossible to get work in this country, but
because I came in February I was able to get a drivers
license and work based on my passport. I consider
myself very, very lucky for my timing. I feel sorry for
people without papers, because I love living here. I
have to start over in this country, but it is worth all the
time and effort.
What program are you in?
I am working on my Associates Degree in Business
Administration. I was never able to finish a degree in
Ecuador, but my job history all pertains to business
administration for international companies with
locations in Ecuador such as Eveready Battery,
Parmalat Milk, and the Gillette Company. I began as a
junior sales person at Ever Ready and worked my way
up to being a distribution supervisor at Parmalat and
finally a Sales Coordinator at Gillette. To continue doing
the work I love to do in here in the USA, I need a
degree which is why Im here at Lincoln.

Lincoln College of Technology

What is your advice for other students?

You must make a commitment to Lincoln. Education is
not free. You pay tuition to get the opportunity to earn
knowledge. This can only happen if you commit fully
and completely to your schooling. You must be on time
and show respect for your teachers and fellow
students. Also, take advantage of resources. English is
not my native language, so I find translation resources
to help me excel in class. We all have support, but
sometimes you need to look for it or ask. School is not
always easy, but it is worth the effort, you are worth
the effort.

The Dental Assistant students at Lincoln College of

Technology made their first debut appearance at All
about Kids Pre-School in Lantana, Fl. Our Dental
Assistant Students where guided by Ms. Field, and
Ms. Gant their instructors, on how to prepare
research, compile data and bring it all together.
Their research was executed and they were able to
bring so much to the table in preparation for their
presentation. The preparation for this outreach
event took many hours and it really showed as they
poured their heart and souls into this project. The
students were divided into three groups and each
group went with their own ideas on how to create
their project boards and presentation to the
children.
This community service project was done on
February 20th in celebration of Childrens National
Dental Health Month which started out as a daylong
celebration on February 8th 1949 and in 1955 went
to a weeklong celebration and in 1981 became the
month long celebration as we now know it. The
American Dental Association sponsors this every
year to raise awareness and emphasize the
importance of regular visits to the dentists. The
Dental Assistant students presentations discussed
this with the children as well as good vs. bad snacks,
health eating habits and brushing instructions. This
age is a perfect age to instill awareness of having a
happy and health mouth for life.
As Dental healthcare providers and Dental
Assistant Instructors, we try to empress upon the
importance and the need to educate others to our
students. Preventative is the best prevention to
good oral hygiene as well as ones overall dental and
medical health. Healthy teeth and gums are
essential to being health internally.

the wisdom to know that tradition is

Jaquiria Colbert calls herself a Florida girl. Not only was she born
and raised right here in West Palm Beach, but her entire family was.
The farthest she travels from home is Georgia where her grandparents
moved to. She loves her hometown too much to even go to Georgia for
long.

How did you come to be here at Lincoln?

My aunt and I were attending Palm Beach State College in elementary education. She finished before me, and
told me that while I love children and teaching the actual job isnt what one believes it will be. After a long talk
and much research on my part, I agreed with her. At the same time I was pregnant and wanted to start a
career to raise my child on a firm foundation. I wanted a quick turn around between education and work that
incorporated hands-on training. I am a hands-on person who likes to throw myself into what I do. I saw Lincoln
from I-95 all the time so I dropped in.
Why Dental Assisting?
Actually I wanted to enter the medical field. When I came to Lincoln the Registered Nurse program didnt exist
and the Medical Assistant program was going to start later in the year. I wanted to begin immediately because
I knew I shouldnt be out of school for too long a period. The woman in admissions talked to me about the
dental program, showed me around, and let me watch a presentation. I had a really good feeling about it so I
enrolled. From the first day in my Intro class I knew Id found not only something Id be good at but something
that Id grow to deeply love on a daily basis. I didnt even know what the different tools were, but from the
start it was clear that the teachers are so committed that youd have to want to fail. My teachers are like
second Moms to me and the class.
What is your five-year plan?
I am doing my extern now in Jupiter. I love working in that kind of community where dentist offices are bustling and people can support so many jobs. I am going to finish my diploma, and then while I work as a dental
assistant in Palm Beach or Jupiter continue on with the Associates program at Lincoln in Dental Office Management. In five years, I want to be running a dental office and having a comfortable life for me and my son.
What is your favorite thing about the program?
Our teachers always tell us that we are a crucial part of a professional dental office. Dentists dont go to school
to learn what we dental assistants do. We are responsible for ourselves and to the dentists for success. This
makes me feel like my own boss and I love it.

the desire of duty to society, and an ongoing

discovery as I grew older in my years.
From the first day of my venture into the
medical field, I knew I had found my calling and
as time passed, I discovered the importance of
my role in this field and how I can make more
of a difference to those in need by being a
nurse.
I value my personal love to care for those who
are sick and the desire of not being or feeling
limited, which is the case; as I am currently a
technician. It is my ultimate goal to become a
Registered Nurse and in this role, I feel I could
achieve the ultimate knowledge in giving those
the help and comfort they so deserve.
Values as a nurse are critical concepts that
include functions to the patients they care for
such as:

Jeffrey Collins
What is your goal as a nurse?
I want to be able to comfort and connect the
healing process with patients; provide my future
patients with respect, dignity, compassion and
the care they deserve from a nurse; bring
conscious effort to enable health to prevail as well
as a realistic prognosis; and to comprehend all
levels of nursing and the ability of this function to
enhance a better understanding to those I will
serve.
Why do you want to be a registered nurse?
Caring for those who are sick, injured and in need
has been my daily routine for the past ten years;
however, it has been a lifetime of inner strength,

mentioned to her that I love Grimaldis. Well after

her talk, she asked me to fill out an application. To
my wonderful surprise she hired me. I started
three days before I turned nineteen. Ive been
there 1 1/2 months and already received a raise.
Tell us about your job at Grimaldis.
I go to school in the morning and then in the
afternoon and evenings work. Weekdays I average
6 hour shifts but more towards 12 hour days on
the weekend. I never thought of pizza as a career
goal, but I absolutely love my job. The work is high
volume and fast paced.

orientation for incoming students.

The first day I went in with the best intentions, and

it was rough. I was hired to work the line, and I was
put on prep for the full day peeling roasted
peppers. I felt like anything that could go wrong
did, but Brenda told me to come back for a second
day and I did. From the second day on, things
changed. I started to pick up things fast, and I
quickly moved up the line from prep to toppings to
dough slapping to ovens. On busy nights, I even
run the ovens now.

Tell us a little about yourself:

Im from the West Palm Beach area , 19 years-old,
and a new student at Lincoln. Ive been in the
Bachelors of Culinary Arts for almost seven months
now.
Why did you choose Lincoln?
For a number of reasons. First it was close and that
makes a big difference. Second, the tuition cost
made it doable for me unlike some other schools.
Third, and maybe the biggest reason is that I went
to a culinary high school with a group of friends
and they all enrolled at Lincoln. I wanted to come
with my friends and continue our education
together.

I have been given such an incredible opportunity

that has significantly change my life and career.
Ive been given the honor of working alongside one
of the chefs who recently came back from Italy
after competing in the U.S. team for the Pizza
Throwing Competition.

What was your career turning point?

One day in my Seafood and Poultry class Brenda
who is the Kitchen Manger at Grimaldis Pizzeria in
Palm Beach Gardens came with one of the cooks
to our class. They talked about the restaurant,
what the work is like, how the kitchen is run, and
then because it was just before season asked if
anyone was interested in working for them. Even
before she told us the reason for the visit I had
Lincoln College of Technology

Do you feel Lincoln equipped you with the skills

to succeed professionally?
I did some catering work throughout high school,
but no one wanted to hire me for restaurant work
because of a lack of experience. Because of my
class at Lincoln, I had a one-in-a-lifetime
opportunity. Thank you Lincoln.

Are you getting enough sleep?

There are many different reasons that people experience problems with sleep. Sleep disturbance can be the result of
anxiety, stress or physical problems/conditions. If you are experiencing a sleep disturbance, it might be helpful to
consult with your doctor. If you believe that stress or anxiety is the cause of your sleep problems, it might be helpful to
consult a counselor.
Overall, we have a tendency to not make sleep a priority based on our busy schedules and a belief that we can make it
up later. Think of sleep as #1 on your to-do list. Do not make it the only thing you do only after everything else is
done stop other things so you get the sleep you need.

What Can Be Done

Basic Strategies for Better Sleep
Never Oversleep: Get up at about the same time every day (weekends too!), even on a morning after you have lost
sleep. Sleeping late for just a couple of days can reset your body clock to a different cycle you will be getting tired
later and waking up later.
Set Your Body Clock: Light helps restart your body clock to its active daytime phase. So when you get up, get some
sunlight in your room. If that's not possible, turn on all the lights in your room and walk around for a few minutes.
Exercise: Keep physically active during the day. This is especially important the day after a bad night's sleep
because when you sleep less, you should be more active during the day. Studies have shown that strenuous exercise (brisk walking, swimming, jogging, squash, etc.) in the late afternoon may promote more restful sleep.
Take a Nap! It's true: 20-30 minute naps have been shown to be beneficial as a supplement to getting your 7-9
hours of sleep. Naps can boost energy and help increase memory. If you find that you are unable to wake up after
20-30 minutes, it could be a sign that you are not getting enough nighttime sleep.
Develop a Bedtime Routine
Tips for Developing a Bedtime Routine
Stop studying and don't get into any stimulating discussions or activities a half hour or hour before bed. Do
something that's relaxing instead.
List To Do's: Keep a pad and pencil handy. If you think of something you want to remember, jot it down. Then let
the thought go.
Stretch and Relaxation: Some people find that a gentle stretching routine for several minutes just before getting
into bed helps induce sleep, while others practice relaxation techniques.
Avoid Caffeine in the Late Afternoon Onwards: Caffeine, a chemical in coffee, colas, tea, chocolate, etc., causes
hyperactivity and wakefulness.
Cut Down on Alcohol: Alcohol might help you get to sleep, but it results in shallow and disturbed sleep, abnormal
dream periods, and frequent early morning awakening.
Sleeping Environment: Sleep in a cool room (60 degrees or so). Pile on another blanket or add one under the
mattress pad rather than turn up the heat. Some people seem to sleep better if there is a white noise -- a fan
running, for example -- in the background. For others, noise can interrupt sleep.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed

by learning and hearing new information?
You are not alone.

The antidote to information overload

The crucial thing to remember is that while information overload is a widespread problem in our society as a whole, it need not take
control over your life. So what can you do?
For starters, take an honest assessment of your priorities. Are you so wrapped up in pursuit of secular knowledge or an online social life that you have no time left to dig deeply into God's Word? Are you routinely using your PDA or laptop when you are with
friends and family? If your priorities are misaligned, be willing to make the necessary changes.
Plan for only one time each day to check e-mail, social messaging sites, chat rooms, etc. Don't allow yourself to check multiple
timesunless you truly are waiting for an important e-mail. Each time you go online, you run the risk of being pulled in, and that
eats up your valuable time.
If you are being barraged with too many electronic interruptions during the weekday, ask people to call or text you during work
hours only if it's a genuine emergency. Otherwise theyand youend up stealing time from your employer.
When you need to do some Internet research, be willing to ask your reference librarian for help. Most librarians are happy to educate people about Internet search techniques, which will help you get better refined search results and waste less time.
Remind yourself that it's okay to not know everything. In fact, it's impossible to keep up with the pace of the information superhighway. The sooner you accept that, the happier you'll be. Know what's worth knowing and what isn't, and be willing to fall behind
on the information that really doesn't matter.
If there are critical features of your computer or other technology that you don't know how to use, look up the appropriate information online, get help from the tech support desk at your local computer store or sign up for a workshop at your local community
center. Don't worry about the applications you don't use.
Set aside a regular time each week where you and other family members do not use any kind of electronic media technologies,
including television. It could be something you do every Sabbath, or perhaps an hour or two every evening. "'Unplugging yourselves' will give you time for family, for reflection or to just unwind," Dr. Levy says.
Finally, no matter how busy you get, make time for some Bible study every day. Keeping your mind focused on God's Word will
help you to filter all the information that's coming at you on a daily basisand to know what's important to address and what isn't!
