Learning Activity
#1

Introduction
Today, students will:
1. Make their own water cycle in a bag
2. Read Magic School Bus book to learn how humans keep
water clean
3. Identify ways to keep water clean
Body
Water Cycle in a Bag
Ask students, what are the stages of the water
cycle?
Explain that today, students will be making their own
little water cycle in a bag
Show the bag Ive made and explain that students
should draw the stages of the water cycle on the bag
including, a body of water, a sun, and some clouds
o Explain that students can use some creativity so
that their bags do not all look the same
Hand out bags and sharpies to students (they will have
to share the sharpies) and allow students to decorate
their bags
Once students have finished decorating their bags, fill

them with a little water and hang them on the window

o Make sure students names are on the bags
Explain that, hopefully, the sun will be enough to warm
up the bags and make the water evaporate
o Students should check out how their bag is
doing throughout the afternoon

Once all the bags are on the window, show a video of
what the bags should look like if the evaporate properly

o Ask students comprehension questions while
reading (focusing on CAF reading strategies)
Point out fact on page 23 about less than 1% of water
being able to drink
o Explain that while the water cycle never ends,
there is not a lot of water on the earth
o Water is important to all living things because
all living things need water to survive
o We need to make sure that we are saving water
and keeping it clean so that there is enough for
everyone and everything
Have students brainstorm a list of ways they can help
save water or keep water clean
