Dr. Letterman served his Internship in
f. Gordon Sparks Letterman,

Founder Letterman, joined those
distinguished members of our
Brotherhood in Chapter Eternal on
March 26. 2001. Brother Letterman
servedhis country. his family, his fellow
rman, and his Fraternity with love, honor
and dignity

Gordon Sparks Letterman was
Initiated into the mysteries of Phi
Kappa Psi as member of the
Missouri Alpha Chapter on May
15,1938. Herepresentedthe family
atmany Grand Arch Councils and
was present in Canonsburg,
Pennsyivaniaduringihe ceremony
commemorating the 100!
anniversary of the founding of Phi
Kappa Psi Fraternity, and made
remarks during the unveiling of
the bronze plaque, then affixed to
the old home of the Widow Laura
Letterman, his grandmother. The
message of that moment, “Grant
us brotherhood, not only for this
ay, but for all our years.”
Dr. Letterman wasbom August
17, 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri He
was awarded a fouryear scholarship to
Washington University in St. Louis,
Missouri, wherehe camedhisA.B-dearee
in 1937 and his Bachelor of Medical
Science degree in 1940. Duringabriliant
undergraduate career, he was elected t0
Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi honorary
societies, among many others. He was
later a recipient of the Johnson and
Summer 2001
Medicine and Surgery at Barnes Hospital,
St. Louis, Missouri, He served his
Residency in General Surgery and Plastic
Surgery at Barnes Hospital and St.Louis
Children's Hospital
From 1944 to 1946 Dr. Letterman
servedin the U.S, Naval Medical Comps, a5
surgeon aboard the LST 931 during the
invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He
also served as surgeon on Base 18 in
(Guam and after returning tothe states, 3
surgeon at St. Albans Hospital on Long
Istand, New York.
Dr. Letterman was elected to the
American Board of Surgery in 1948and the
American Board ofPasti Surgery in 1950,
[Not only was he a distinguished surgeon,
and plastic surgeon, butaneminentteacher
as well. He held successively higher
appointments at The George Washington
University School of Medicine in
‘Washington. DC: firstas Clinical instructor
and then as Clinical Professor of Surgery
‘and later, Professor of Surgery and
Plastic Surgery
Dr. Letterman was a post
‘graduate Professor of Aesthetic
Plastic Surgery with the
Intemational Society of Aesthetic
Plastic Surgery and a member of
faculty for Instructional Coursesin
Baden, West Germany (1976)
Tokyo, Japan (1977), Lausanne,
Switzerland(1978), Ankara, Turkey
(2978), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
(1979), Bristol, England (1980),
“Tokyo, Japan (1981), and Uppsala,
Sweden (1983) untlhisretirement
in 1993, During his career he was
‘consultant at Newton D. Baker
Veteran's Administration Hospital,
Martinsburg, West Virginia:

Hospital, Andrews Air Force Base;
‘Walter Reed Army Medical Center;

Dr Letterman was Professor of Surgery
Emeritus at The George Washington
Universiy School of Medicine and was
appointed Chairman of the Section for
PasicSurgeryat Sibley Memorial Hospital

years and his son, Gordon R. Letterman,
