Al-Hijra: Islamic New Year
Al-Hijra, the Islamic New Year, is celebrated on the first day of Muharram, the month in which
Muhammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE (the Hijra).
Leadership Structure
Islam does not have an ordained clergy with authority over
rites and rituals. Any Muslim with sufficient knowledge
may lead prayers or perform rituals such as weddings or
funerals. In the early years of Islam, learned members of
the mosque led the prayers and gave the Friday sermon.
They were called imams literally, those who stand in
front.
Monotheistic or Polytheistic?
Islam is a monotheistic religion that
worships the one God that gave
Prophet Muhammad messages via the
archangel Gabriel. The religion refers
to the one God as Allh.
Major Sects?
There is a major prominent sect in Islamic religion. Sunni
Muslims include 84%90% of all Muslims Other Muslims
