Proposed Three-Year Budget for 2016-2017/ 2017-2018/ 2018-2019

The goals of Terry Brooks Middle School Media Center Program is to promote
to love of reading for all demographics and their interests by increasing the amount
of books that have shown to be high interest to ELL populations including books in
different languages. Another program goal of the media center includes
collaborating with staff to implement strategies with the end goal of increasing
informational literacy and student reading comprehension.
With the student population at Terry Brooks Middle School ranging between
1,000 and 1,200 students, the media center receives approximately $16,700
annually based off FTE calculations. With the ever growing school population,
specifically the increase in ESOL learners, the principal of Terry Brooks Middle School
has stated that all monies received from both state and local budgets goes towards
the Media Centers Program Goals. These funds also include the average $500
dollars collected for book fines along the entire profits of both the winter and spring
books fairs. When adding the book fair and book fine funds the Medias budget
could range from $16,700 to $20,000 annually. The Media Specialist will write the
budget solely based on the FTE state and local funds and will use any extra funds to
continue to replenish and replace materials as needed.

Books: The collection of books, both English books and book written in other
languages
(predominantly Spanish), will be weeded out and updated
continuously throughout the school year. Books that have been
discarded will go into the free books bin for students to take home.
As part of the Media Centers Program goal of increasing books that are of an
interest to the multifaceted population of the middle school, along with books
written in other languages (predominantly in Spanish), the media centers
budget allotment of $8,000 for books has been divided up between English
and Spanish books in order successfully implement the program goal. Each
year the Media Specialist will take into account the growing ELL
population/cultural interests; along the wish list of both students, parents and
staff, to decide what books should be purchased for the given year. There will
also be 3 copies of the top 10 Georgia Book Award nominated books
purchased each year to add to the media center collection.
Periodicals and Magazines: Interest related magazines (Sports, Cars, Hobbies)
have been
growing in popularity with young, secondary education students, and
the collection will be updated regularly based off of yearly interest
surveys. Periodicals can also be of interest and align with the Media
Centers goal of information literacy given that they can be used for
current issue research in multiple different contents.
AV Materials
With student growth in the use of technology, and the goal of increasing
student enjoyment in
Reading, there will be funds allotted each year to start and increase a
collection of books on CD for student and staff use. There will also be money
allocated for content related videos. The content of videos will be decided on
via a survey of teachers and staff at the end of each school year. The money
allotted for videos and books on CD will also include buying second copies
ESOL students in Spanish to accommodate the schools increasing population
of ELLs.

Software
Each year the budget reflects the purchase of Brainpop, which includes both
the English and Spanish versions, along with Flocabulary. Brainpop is a
resources that teachers use for the teaching of, or the review of, content
materials that are aligned with Common Core and Georgia Performance
Standards. The students have the ability to log on at home to review
concepts and explore current events. Flocabulary is a software that takes
Common Core and Georgia Performance Standards and puts it to rap music.
This decision to purchase this software is based off of student interest in
music, via a survey of the demographic interests, that attend Terry Brooks
Middle School.

Equipment
Currently the media center at Terry Brooks Middle School is lacking adequate
technology. In order for the media center to be successful in the program goal
of informational literacy, computers must be purchased. The budget reflects
three computers to be purchased per year for a total of 6 computers in the
first two years of the budget plan along with headsets in the first and third
year to use with the computers. The computers will give students the ability
to conduct research for content classes, and practice their informational
literacy skills, under the supervision of the media specialist. The third year
the computer allotment will be transferred to media center supplies, unless
the money is needed to repair or replace a computer.

Media Center Supplies

Supplies for the media center include, but are not limited to: staplers,
bookmarks, paper, post-it notes, butcher paper, replacement of Die letters
and numbers for the Die Cutter machine and laminating materials. Media
center supplies can also be purchased with the book fair and book fine
monies that will be collected throughout the year.
