DR. CHARLES A. HOFFMAN, M.D.

Dr. Charles Carl A. Hoffman was born in Ironton, Ohio, where he first started in
medicine working at a local pharmacy. He earned his Bachelors in Science from Marshall
College (now University) and his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of
Medicine. Eventually, he settled in Huntington, WV and opened the Hoffman Urological Clinic
here in 1944. He would also serve as Marshall Universitys University Physician and teach
premedical classes.
While working as a physician, Dr. Hoffman was very active in professional organizations.
He served as president of the West Virginia State Medical Association in 1957 and founded the
American Association of Clinical Urologists, which continues to sponsor the Hoffman Lecture
series in his name. The pinnacle of Dr. Hoffmans career was his election to the presidency of the
American Medical Association in 1972. During his one-year term, he led the medical community
through national discussions concerning health insurance and medical malpractice. Furthermore,
he embarked on a European tour to study how other countries structured their healthcare
systems.
Dr. Hoffman recognized that Marshall University needed a medical school, and he played
an integral role in that schools establishment. He and his wife, Lynn, were Charter Members of
the John Marshall Society, and Dr. Hoffman was an enthusiastic supporter of Marshall athletics.
The school awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Science in 1972 to recognize his
contributions to the Marshall community. Dr. Hoffman died in 1981 in Huntington.
