Test Friday April 1 on:

Equations
Inequalities
Graphing/writing
equations
Systems

Did I pass with at

least a 70% for
EACH?

Notes 1: Solving Equations (Video 1, Video 2,

& Video 3)

When solving equations with one variable, usually

x, the goal is to isolate the variable on one side of
the equation and to get a number on the other side of
the equation.
The way we do this is by doing inverse (opposite)
operations.
Examples:
1) 2 x3=9

2) 2 +5=4

You Try 1:
3 3 x +4=22

Harder Examples:

4) 4 ( x 2 )+ 3 x=20

5)

You Try 2:
6) 3 ( x1 )+ 2=5 x3

Absolute Value Examples:

7 |5|=

8)

|5|=

9) |x|=6
x=_____ or x=_______
10) |x2|=15

11 |x3|+ 5=7

2 ( x +3 ) +5=4 x +11

You Try 3:

12 |x +1|3=6

Notes 2: Solving Equations (Video 4, Video

5, & Video 6)
Solving Inequalities is JUST LIKE SOLVING
EQUATIONS except
If you multiply or divide both sides by a negative
number you need to switch the inequality symbol
And, you need to graph your answer on a number
line.
Examples:

Compound Inequalities:

Absolute Value Inequalities:

Notes 3: Graphing and Writing Equations (Video 7

& Video 8)
Writing Equations with 2 Variables (Word Problems)
Define your variables
Write an equation relating the variables
Use the equation to solve any relevant questions
Examples:
1) Ms. Padilla and the Environmental Club plant a tree at
Poly. The baby tree starts at a height of 8 inches.
Every month it grows 2 inches.
a) Let y=_______________ and x=_______________
b) Write an equation:
c) How many months will it take for the tree to be 2
feet (24 inches) tall?

2) A bathtub is full and has 50 liters of water in it. The

water is draining and is losing 10 liters per minute.

a) Let x=_________________ and y=________________

b) Write an equation:
c) How long will it take for the bathtub to be empty?

Graphing Lines:
y=mx +b

m is the slope
b is the y-intercept
Positive Slope:
Slope:

Notes 4: Systems of Equations (Video 9, Video 10,

Video 11)
Solving Systems by Graphing
Graph both lines
Find the point of intersections
(If they dont intersect, there is no solution)
Examples:

Solving Systems by Substitution

Substitute for y
Solve for x
Plug in x and solve for y
Examples:

Solving by Elimination
Possibly multiply one (or both) equations in order to
eliminate x or y
Add the equations to eliminate x or y
Solve for the remaining variable
Plug that back in to one of the equations to solve for
the other variable
