GaDOE TASK: WHAT IS STATISTICAL QUESTION
Teacher will write a scenario on the board:
Day 1

Here are some suggestions:

Project a picture of a crowd of people from a recent event such as a festival or sporting
event.
Show a portion of a recent news clip.
Write a statement such as, This weekend I went to a basketball game on the board.

Teacher will have the students examine the situation presented.

Teacher will prompt students to:
1. Make a list of at least 10 questions you could ask about this scenario.
2. Circle questions that can be answered with a single answer such as, What is your name?
3. Underline the questions with answers containing variability such as, How far do you
live from your classmates?
Teacher will show this video on statistical questions.
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability/statistical-studies/statisticalquestions/v/statistical-questions
Teacher will have students answer the following question: What must be true about a question
for it to classify as a statistical question?
Day 2

STATISTICAL QUESTIONS
Teacher will Use the concept of variability to determine whether a question is statistical.
Statistical Questioning lesson will help the Teacher explain and demonstrate how to recognize a
statistical question. Students will work through the slides with the teacher to familiarize
themselves with terms and information required to complete their work period activity. A short
video recap of the lesson will follow the instruction and practice.
Students will research the definition of categorical data and quantitative data and
determine which question goes with which definition.

Day 3

Teacher will review and model the lesson to display numerical data in plots on a number line,
including box plots. Students will practice with displaying data and will see a video that models
the same.

MEASURES OF CENTER: SKEWS

Day 4 Students will review key vocabulary terms and definitions through Its a Chain Reaction. The
teacher will begin by calling on one student to provide the definition and example for the first
term on the Word Wall for the unit on Statistics. Going forward, each student will call on another
peer to engage in the same. Students will provide Snaps for Satisfactory when the agree with
what their peers have provided, providing the opportunity for them to address misconceptions
between each other.
The teacher will demonstrate measures of center and skews, etc. through the following videos:

https://learnzillion.com/lessons/3109-describe-the-shape-of-a-dot-plot (skews, etc.)
DISPLAYING DATA
Day 5

The students will learn how to set up Histograms (Continual Data) vs. Bar Graph (Categories)
https://learnzillion.com/lessons/3793-choose-the-best-graph-for-a-data-set-using-measures-ofcenter
The teacher will take the students through the lesson plan that compare box plot, line plot and
histogram graphs to represent data.

Work Session (Explore, Explain, Elaborate)

Formative assessment data will be used to determine groups.

Day 1

Differentiated Instruction/ Small Group/Task

Richmond County Lesson Planning Template

PERFORMANCE TASK: What is a Statistical Question?
Group I (below-level):

Provide statistical questions for Question #4 . Be prepared to discuss what makes your
questions statistical.
Group II (on-level):

Students will work independently private think time approx. 10 minutes on

questions 3 and 4.

Students will discuss the task and their solutions with their partner or group
members. The teacher will provide them with one or two of the questions for their group to
present during the closing (Teacher will use the Select/Sequence Strategy) for selection.
(Select/Sequence Strategy is when the teacher chooses certain groups or students to present
based on misconceptions to build understanding for all)
Group III (advanced):

Have the students create statistical questions for an experiment and surveys. Students
will explain how they will collect the data for each type of question.

Day 2

LEARNING TASK: Statistical Analysis
Group I (below-level):

The group will discuss and explain why each of the following is or is not a statistical
question. Change any non-statistical questions into statistical questions.
1. How far can I run in one hour?
2. What is the favorite food of students in my school?
3. How many pets do each of the students in my class have?
4. How old is Erica's pet?
Group II (on-level):

Students will work independently they will answer the same questions as Group I.
The following is a sample of the top students results from a class.
Arianna

90%

Selena

92%

Jim

88%

Jahmeisha

94%

a. Is the data in the table above statistical? The data in the table above is statistical.
b. What statistical question could have been asked to get this data? Answers will
vary and can include: How did students do on a quiz? What percent of problems do
sixth graders get correct on a homework assignment? How much work have students
completed on their projects?
Group III (advanced):

Students will answer the same questions as Group I.

Students will answer the same question and use the same table as Group II.

EXTENSION QUESTIONS: Use the table, students will answer the following
question:
If all the students scored 100% on the assignment, would the data still be statistical?
EXPLAIN your answer?

Day 3

PERFORMANCE LESSON TASK: Decomposing Polygons & Area
Group I (below-level):
Students will work in small groups with teacher to solve problems. Each group will transfer
their answers to a chart paper to share how they arrived at their solutions at the end of class. As
students to explain the concepts in each problem in their own words and to connect each to the
relevant part of the task.
Group II (on-level):
Students will work in small groups to solve problems. Each group will transfer their answers to
a chart paper to share how they arrived at their solutions at the end of class. As students to explain
the concepts in each problem in their own words and to connect each to the relevant part of the
task.
Group III (advanced):

Students will work independently to solve problems. Each group will transfer their answers to a
chart paper to share how they arrived at their solutions at the end of class. As students to explain
the concepts in each problem in their own words and to connect each to the relevant part of the
task.

Day 4

PERFORMANCE LEARNING TASK: Finding Surface Area

Group I (below-level):

Teacher will start this group on the worksheet. Students will work in pairs to answer the
math problems. .
Group II (on-level):

Students will work independently on the worksheets.

Group III (advanced):

Students should be able to work independently. Students will create a Foyer Model on
chart paper about statistical questions. Students will present the model to the class.

Day 5

PERFORMANCE TASK: PACKAGING OUR GOODS-Rectangular Prisms
Group I (below-level):

Students should be paired or work in groups. Students will require teacher guidance to
keep them engaged in this activity that requires more depth of knowledge thinking.
Group II (on-level):

Students will work independently with some monitoring that they are on task.
Group III (advanced):

Students will work independently.

Closing (Evaluate)

DAY 1: JOURNAL REFLECTION

Each Group will share out their discussion about "What is a statistical question?"

DAY 2: ANALYZE AND INTERPRET

Students will complete the following formative assessment:

6.SP.1 Informal Checkpoint #1

DAY 3: ANALYZE AND INTERPRET

Students will respond to the question below in math journals:

When should you show data on a box plot?

Possible answers include: we can see information at a glance such as lowest data, highest data, median,
middle 50% of data, inter-quartile range: range of the middle two sections of data, if there are any
outliers, where the groups of data occur, etc). You can analyze the "spread" of the data, and determine if
there is a great deal of variation by comparing the spread of the values in each quartile.

DAY 4: JOURNAL REFLECTION

Students will explain skewed to the right and skewed to the left in a short writing and its application
usefulness.

DAY 5: JOURNAL REFLECTION

Students will write about what they learned today. How did the manipulatives help you develop a
strategy to solve the problems?
