Effectively Integrating Technology in the Classroom
By: Melanie Kirby
NETS-T standards
NETS-T5: Engage in professional growth and leadership.
A. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to
improve student learning.
Focus Question:
How can teachers effectively integrate technology in their classroom?
Related Questions:
What are web 2.0 tools?
What types of web 2.0 tools are available for teacher use?
How to navigate various web 2.0 tools?
Can web 2.0 tools be used to engage and assess the students?
Objectives:

Participants will understand how to effectively integrate web 2.0 tools in their

classrooms.
Participants will apply navigation skills to the web 2.0 tools discussed in this
workshop.
Participants will be able to facilitate student interest, improve learning, and collect
assessment data through web 2.0 tools.
Participants will define web 2.0 tools.
Participants will create a lesson plan to incorporate instructional technology.
Resources Needed:
Participants will need a laptop with computer access, speakers, links to web 2.0 tools provided throughout
the lesson. The teachers will also need the kahoot link and code to enter the Kahoot and answer preassessment questions for the lesson.

Description of Activities:

Hook (2 minutes)
-- The facilitator will begin by inviting the teachers into a Kahoot quiz to assess their current methods of
integrating technology and knowledge of web 2.0 tools.
Introduction (3 minutes)
-- The teacher will lay out the foundational understanding of web 2.0 tools. The instructor will outline the
objectives to be obtained by the completion of the workshop. The instructor will introduce the learners to
the web 2.0 tools that will be discussed throughout the workshop: Kahoot (demonstrated in the beginning,
Plickers, Padlet, and the Google extension Read & Write. The instructor will use a piktochart presentation
to host all the content and links for the course.
An Examination (15-20 minutes)
-- The instructor will remind the teachers that the tool Kahoot used in the beginning is a great tool to
quickly assess students just as demonstrated in the presentation, practice vocabulary, and much more.
-- The instructor will introduce the teachers to the tool and application called Plickers. The teacher will
explain that Plickers is an excellent way to have students quickly respond and assess student learning.
The instructor will explain that plickers works by posting a question for the students to respond to. The
students then hold up their plicker cards with their letter choice (A, B, C, or D) on the top of their card. The
teacher then holds up their iPad or phone with the downloaded application and it instantly scans all
student responses and scores them. The instructor will show some data collected and outline how to add
a new question. The instructor will then allow the teachers to share ways Plickers could be beneficial or
used in their classroom.
-- The instructor will introduce the teachers to Padlet, giving them an overview of how it can be used. The
instructor will explain that it is basically a blank canvas that can be used in a variety of ways. Padlet can
be used on an individual basis where students build a bulletin board for a project, quick activity, or to
quickly assess student understanding. The instructor will demonstrate how to input information and
images in Padlet. The instructor will explain that the students can log on to Padlet using their Google
account and create their own Padlet based on a given set of instructions. Or, the instructor can push out a
link to all students and students can answer simultaneously on the same Padlet page. The instructor will
explain how this can be beneficial in the classroom and allow teachers to ask questions about the tool.
-- The instructor will introduce the teachers to the Google extension Read & Write. The facilitator will
supply teachers will the link to this extension. Then, the teacher will demonstrate how this tool works and
the effect it has on students learning. This tool is particularly beneficial for students with varying ability
levels with writing. Many students struggle with properly reading their writing before declaring it complete.
However, with the implementation of this tool, students are excited about reviewing and listening to their
reading. It easily helps them identify errors that need to be fixed. The instructor will demonstrate this to
the teachers. Then the instructor will and allow teachers to ask questions about the tool.

Conclusion: (5 minutes)
-- At the conclusion of the tutorials, the instructor will have the participants choose one tool to brainstorm
how they would use it in their classroom. The participants will use padlet to complete this discussion.
-- Teachers will answer the questions from the pre-assessment on Kahoot again.
Extension Activity:
-- Participants will be given one week to create an integrated technology lesson to be used within their
classroom. Participants will be encouraged to use one of the tools covered in the workshop. However,
teachers that are proficient with technology will be encouraged to research and use a new web 2.0 tool.
-- Teachers will be provided with the link to the Blendspace created by the facilitator along with links to
other web 2.0 tools.
Teaching Tips:
-- The instructor will understand that teachers will have varying levels of comfort with integrating
technology within their classroom.
-- Differentiate extension activity for those that may be proficient with technology and already use tools
covered in the workshop.
-- The instructor will emphasize their role in assisting the teachers in integrating technology within their
classroom and helping facilitate their first lesson.
-- Encourage teachers to form collaborative groups with others in their grade level and subject area to
share Internet resources with others in their own schools.
-- Show students examples and data to illustrate how the tools can be used and the value of using the
tool.
Workshop Evaluation:
Participants will be learning will be evaluated throughout the professional development session.
Participants understanding of the workshop content will be assessed through a quiz tool Kahoot and
group discussion. Participants understanding of implementing technology within their classroom will be
assessed when they provide a scenario outlining how the web 2.0 tools discussed could be used in their
classroom.
The instructor and overall effectiveness of the course will be evaluated through an instructor-supplied
survey using Google Forms.
