Subject: Nationalism and Ireland
Instruction time: 90 minute block

Standard(s) to be addressed:
SS.912.H.2 - Understand how and why people create, maintain, or change systems of power,
authority, and governance.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to analyze a series of documents connected to Irish Nationalism and form
and defend an opinion on which aspect of Irish culture was most affected by the ongoing conflict
in the nation.
Agenda:
1. Bell Assignment- Review of previous days concepts What is nationalism? What are
some of the core concepts of nationalism? How do you think they will affect the nation
you are studying?
2. Students will be given a series of documents addressing Irish Nationalism and the
various cultural aspects it influenced. They will then be given individual worktime to
analyze and annotate the documents, paying key attention to the cultural impacts of
nationalism
3. Students will be grouped together (3-4 students) and go over their comments on the
documents.
4. The student groups will then be given questions based on the readings, that they are to
answer based on their opinions. They will need to support their answers with evidence
a. In what ways were politics, education, economics all affected by Irish
Nationalism?
b. How were Irish-Catholics persecuted in Ulster?
c. Why did the Unionist movement embrace such violent means to accomplishing
their goals?
d. What role did religion play in constructing the two radical nationalistic
movements?
5. The students will then return to individual work and write a short essay (2-3 paragraphs)
answering the question What aspect of Irish culture was most influenced by
nationalism?
a. This will need to follow all writing mechanics discussed throughout the year
i. Proper thesis, topic sentences, conclusion, etc
b. This will be turned in at the beginning of the next class
